I think I remember hearing a few people around here rave about the device.
Spent this past weekend in nyc and wanted to have Google Maps in my hand while walking around. How is map functionality offline with this gizmo? What else besides music can it do offline while I\'m riding the train?
Thanks Squidgrind

the maps work better with the iphone since you need a wifi connection for them to work on the touch. The iphone can use the cellular connection, not to mention a gps... and now a compass.
-
But... I\'m locked into AT&T for 2yrs (which has spotty service in DC) and have to plop down $100 a month. (correct if I\'m wrong)
Don\'t get me wrong, I\'d love those features but I\'d only need the map functionality once a month or so when I\'m on vacation.
-
well, not being in the States I don\'t know anything about AT&T or it\'s contracts.
But yes, the iphone is locked into the AT&T network, I\'m pretty sure you can buy it without a contract now a days, but it costs a whole lot. iPhone OS 3.0 is pretty close to being unlocked though.
But, the touch does work fine with google maps and it costs a whole lot less. But, there are fewer connectivity options.
-
Yeah, I have an iPhone. You can buy one without a contract and unlock it illegally to use it on another carrier, but without a contract, the iPhone is gonna run you a lot more than it usually does.
I pay something around $80 a month, with no upgrades to my texting or hours or anything.
That said, I think it\'s been completely worth it.

Blackberries offer the same functionality and are offered on all networks. To be honest, I prefer them to iPhones.
-
I had blackberry for many years. Loved it, but it\'s no where near an iPhone.

Iphone Kicks It

There\'s just something about tactile keyboards that makes a Blackberry better. Plus in order to have an iPhone you have to be on AT&T\'s crappy network.
If the iphone ever came out on Verizon RIM would be in a tough spot.
-
Depends on what you want it for. If it\'s for business, blackberry\'s have more functionality. But otherwise, with the way the iPhone\'s app store is right now, there\'s just so much more support for them, and so many more things you can do.
It is true that AT&T sucks a nut, but I haven\'t really had noticeable problems with service. In fact, I get better service where I live on my iPhone than I previously did with a Verizon phone.
Also, everyone I know who has an iPhone loves it and has no regrets about their decision.

aye i love my iphone
one of the best things i\'ve purchased in a long time

My many family members all have Verizon, so there will be no iphone in my near future. I do have a 16GB ipod touch, and I love it.
I can\'t really answer your original question about offline maps since I\'ve never attempted offline mappage, but if you\'re in a large enough city with free/unsecured wifi, it does triangulate your position pretty accurately.
If you go to macrumors.com, you\'ll see that the ipod touch is due/overdue for an upgrade, so if you can wait a month or three to buy one, you probably should.
Overall, the ipod touch is one of the coolest gadgets I\'ve owned, and is 2nd in usefullness only to my gps.
Oh, one more thing, ipod touch web browser doesn\'t support flash, so hulu is not a possibility...at least not with the current ipod touch. I was a little disappointed about that, but I\'m not a big online-tv watcher, so it\'s not a big deal.

it\'s popular to diss att service and network coverage, but I get signals in places my friends on verizon don\'t. plus i\'m getting an iphone implanted in my skull in about a month anyway.

Yea, I hear the same thing applies to the iphone when it comes to flash support. We\'ll just have to wait for HTML5 and the < video > tag (which Google is actually pushing for).
Thanks for the mac rumors update, I\'ll definitely read up on that and hold out for a later model if it means only waiting a couple of months.
-
well, flash is just too cpu intensive to justify it\'s use on mobile phones. That being said, the HTC Hero supports it.
-
Flash sucks. It just filled a multimedia gap in the interwebs while the W3C was getting formed.
If you have a beta browser that\'s not IE you can check out the
