Title: Obama renews a couple of controversial Patriot Act provisions.
Post by: GmanJoe on September 16, 2009, 04:42:04 AM
To paraphrase what Bush said "Wait until you take my seat and see why I had supported this."

Obama was against it when he ran. Now he realizes that it was not such a bad idea after all.

Quote
The Justice Department has indicated that the Obama administration is in support of renewing a pair of controversial sections of the USA Patriot Act that expire later this year. The provisions that will expire in December include Section 206, that allows "roving" wiretaps so FBI agents can tap multiple phones or computers (with court authorization) that a specific person (target) may use.

Another expiring provision, Section 215, is the so-called "library provision," which allows investigators to obtain business records with approval from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

And the final provision which was nicknamed the "Lone Wolf" authorization, allows intelligence gathering of people not suspected of being part of a foreign government or known terrorist organization.

Well at least he\'s getting Gitmo cleared out and not raising taxes on the middle class.

So we have that going for us..  Which is nice..

never cared about wire tapping.

the president gets all the info on the results of the patriot act. and for a guy to be on the outside and be against it, then be on the inside and be for it just tells me that the we get important info from it and that it\'s needed.

At least Bush wasn\'t the barbarian that people thought he was. There\'s a need to sacrifice a little bit for our own privacy. I don\'t care what Benjamin Franklin said, these times, it is a necessary evil.

Oh...yeah, I can\'t remember exactly what Franklin said. Something about if we had to give up a little bit of freedom for security, it was the end of..... I can\'t remember. :)

Here it is. :)

    * They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
o This was written by Franklin, with quotation marks but almost certainly his original thought, sometime shortly before February 17, 1775 as part of his notes for a proposition at the Pennsylvania Assembly, as published in Memoirs of the life and writings of Benjamin Franklin (1818). A variant of this was published as:
+ Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
                      # This was used as a motto on the title page of An Historical Review of the Constitution and Government of Pennsylvania. (1759); the book was published by Franklin; its author was Richard Jackson, but Franklin did claim responsibility for some small excerpts that were used in it.
o An earlier variant by Franklin in Poor Richard\'s Almanack (1738): "Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power."
o The saying has also appeared in many paraphrased forms:
+ They that can give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither.
He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security.
He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.
People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.
If we restrict liberty to attain security we will lose them both.
Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.
He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither.
Those who would trade in their freedom for their protection deserve neither.
Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security.

I agree with this...i never had a problem with the wire-tapping...if FBI agents want to hear how i\'m crushin\' gman\'s sister, i\'ve got no problem with that....:fro:

I feel the average American wouldn\'t even be impacted by the Patriot act. Most parts of it make me feel safer and stop these guys before they attack. It would be pretty stupid to just allow these kinds of people to carry out acts. I can see if another attack happened, people will be asking "where were the wire taps?"

The Kalifornistans aren\'t saying much. Those libs aren\'t happy about this, I\'m sure. Obama was their Jesus-hippie.
