Dead Space is definitely on my list of best new IPs to come from this generation. Plus it got a great reception for being the most survival horror-y game we\'ve had in a while, so I dont think there\'s a chance for it to lose that like RE did.

Is it possible for them to IMPROVE on the first one?  I\'m not sure, but if they do, holy ____ it\'s going to be awesome.

it\'s a game, not a rare astronomical event. go rent it or something

and yea, it\'s going to be tough for them to outdo themselves. Hopefully they come up with a few good gameplay changeups like the zero gravity puzzles. Plus the dead space universe is open to whatever enemies their sick minds can come up with.

I don\'t rent games; and too many new games to buy, AC2, God of War3, GT5, Heavy Rain, FFXIII, and too busy lately with Uncharted2 and MW2.

Guess what? Unless Visceral’s being amazingly cryptic, Dead Space 2 – announced today – is to have multiplayer.

I\'m happy that this will be ONLINE multiplayer...this game is not meant to be played offline multi....and the first game was imo the best horror game of 08....yup as good as RE5 was, that game just wasn\'t scary and completely lost it\'s horror roots.

Dead Space kept you on edge and the situation that you was in seemed hopeless..THAT is how survival horror is supposed to feel, chris was uppercutting zombies like he was ryu or some s**t....i\'m definitely lookin\' forward to dead space 2.

I was a bit concerned in the article where it states gamers stated that they didn\'t feel "badass" while playing the first game.......i hope they don\'t cater to these idiotic 12-13 year old halo/ call of duty/ grand theft auto/fps shallow playing nitwits.

You\'re NOT supposed to feel "badass" when playing a game like this....those gamers that want badass can go and play RE5....but after reading the rest of the article it seems that are still going to stay true to the dread and hopelessness of the first game.....tho they did state that the player will have moments of feeling superior over the creatures, i just hope that isn\'t a major part of the overall gameplay....i liked feeling on edge and helpless in the first game.

There\'s waaay to many horror gaming idiots out there that want their horror games to be a RE5/ left 4 dead blastfest....it\'s what\'s ruining horror movies today and if they\'re not careful, it\'s going to ruin horror video games as well....me? i\'ll stick to tradionally scary intense atmospheric gaming content....so far I can only get my fix currently from Dead Space/Siren new translation and The Silent Hill games...RE is completely action now.

ugh. thats so retarded. What\'s even worse is their sales will probably go up if they make their guy "bad ass". you can feel like a bad ass in almost every other game out there. i swear people say they want different games but they really just want the same game over and over again.

doesnt even make sense to be an engineer (not even a soldier) on a ship that was taken over by f-ed up aliens and be a bad ass. defeats the whole purpose

I can pick up the first dead space on the 360 for about $15 shipped... so i\'ll probably do that after Christmas.  So many games I need to catch up on since I\'ve missed so much not having a console.

I can see me buying TONS of used games... should keep me busy for a good while :thumb:

Last December, Electronic Arts revealed that internal studio Visceral Games was underway with a sequel to the acclaimed survival horror title Dead Space. Then, the publisher said that series hero Isaac Clarke would prove more aggressive and that the sequel would also include a new online mode.

Speaking to IGN, senior vice president and head of Visceral Games, Nick Earl, offered a few more details about the anticipated project -- namely, that action and polish are at the forefront of the sequel. Earl even compared the effort with two non-EA franchises known for their undiluted intensity.

"I can tell you that we\'re a little more focused on action horror as opposed to survival horror. We just created a really beautiful sequence that we\'re showing internally -- we haven\'t showed it externally yet, but we will get it out there soon -- that I think speaks to the high voltage nature of the game," he said. "Some really strong action sequences that I think are on par with the level that we\'re seeing in the Modern Warfare series and with the level that we\'re seeing in Uncharted. Just beautiful, visual imagery and very electric action."

He also said that Dead Space 2 will see further polish, "... which is saying a lot since Dead Space was so highly rated."

While he wouldn\'t yet talk about any more specifics, he did say that the experience would prove "jaw-dropping in terms of scale and scope."

"I feel very confident about where Dead Space is. I can tell you that we\'re not resting on our laurels. We\'re going very, very aggressively to take it to the next level," said Earl.

Wtf??!!...Modern Warfare and Uncharted?...they\'re turning this into RE5 prt2. Why EA?...i know a couple of folks from the original team left, and i\'m not sure if this guy was around for the first game, but the tight and dark and slow pace of the first game and atmosphere was brilliant.

The original game may not have sold big numbers, but i don\'t think it justifies them turning this into an action romp....but i kinda blame both parties here(the gamers and the producers of this current game)..i blame the dev\'s for caving in  to these 14 yr old pimple paced idiots that want everything to be a fps blastfest...i also blame the dev\'s for not staying true to the source material in keeping the game a true horror experience.

Lasty i blame the gamers...EA stated when they got feedback from the first game that gamers stated they didn\'t feel "badass"... well all of you idiotic survival ACTION horror fans, a game that had serious potential to give RE a true run for it\'s money (and imo was better than RE5) is slowly becoming a generic blastfest like the latest interation of RE....seems like for true survival horror i\'m going to have to stick to the silent hill series.

That series is struggling as well, but only because this is the generation of FPS\'s. If it doesn\'t involve grenades or machine guns or first person views, it won\'t sell...at least SH  hasn\'t jumped ship yet and has continued to stay true to it\'s material.

Visceral Games recognizes the fact that they could have done the demo for the first Dead Space a little different, making the experience better for gamers and, in the end, sales. Showing up over a month after the retail release, the demo pretty much missed the window for gamers on the fence to try and then, hopefully, buy. This time, with the Dead Space 2 demo, the developers have learned their lesson.
“Last time, I just heard a lot of comments like ‘The demo was way too hard,’ or ‘It kind of came out after the fact.’ We’re really putting an emphasis on making sure that we have something there so that new people can check it out,” said executive producer Steve Papoutsis. “There’s a lot of people that seem interested and we just want to give them an opportunity to check it out and get into it.”
In the end, Visceral wants to create a game that will keep the player going chapter after chapter, but Papoutsis says the demo is just as important, “…we want the demo to be the kind of event where you play it and you go ‘Holy ****, I’m going out right now, I’ve got to get this!’”

I did happen to a small gameplay clip from the pax event....and honestly it still looks like it\'s staying very close to the original at least in terms of visuals....they did make an improvement of the zero-gravity gameplay tho.

It seems now isaac has jet thrusters on his boots and can actually manuver around a bit instead of just jumping from point to point like in the original...it was a real short clip, but what i did see looked decent....i\'ll see if i can find it...

i wish PAX er something was closer to me. I\'m still holding on to the hope that they replace comic-con with something video game focused.

Comic-con outgrew san diego, so that\'s going to go, but I\'m not really into 90% of what comic-con has anyway.

But that clip did look pretty good, clips. I\'m still holding judgment ever since they compared it to modern warfare. I\'m thinking they just meant bigger set-pieces, which might be cool looking

Well, I\'m with you when they ruin the experience just to sell and make money.
I didn\'t play Dead Space though most gamers say is one of the best game this gen, and I\'m pretty sure I\'ll buy it in Sept, when I\'ll get some free time.

In other cases sequels are great, like Uncharted2, I mean, if you have the real intention and great ideas to produce a nice sequel.
I think Resistance2 was disappointing a bit, hope number 3 will have a more grey, scaring, thrilling atmosphere; they should focus more on these elements and the story rather than scale, number of enemies on screen, scale of enemies, and draw distance.

I get what you\'re saying. It\'s frustrating thinking that a company is making Game 1.5 instead of trying to invent something new.

But at the same time, there\'s only so much they can do in one game. I\'m sure they have a boat load of great, innovative ideas to stick into a dead space game, but they cant put them in because it would take too long to make a game..it already takes 2+ years just to make the one they\'re putting out (which is part of the problem).

So I still think games can be innovative and still be a sequel. I may not want to play through dead space again, but I do want to play a new experience in the same universe.

So I think it depends more on the game than generalizing that all games are cheapened by having sequels. Bioshock is a great example. I didnt even both with bioshock 2 since it looked exactly like the first one, but the next bioshock looks amazing...they changed it up enough to be innovative (or so it seems..they\'ve only shown a CG trailer), but still has that bioshock feeling and doesnt alienate the fans.

In a perfect world, new IP\'s would be coming out every year and be amazing..but there\'s way too many question marks around new games. It took a while for people to adopt dead space as a big title...they arent going to go through the same troubles of releasing a new name with new concepts every time..just doesnt make sense financially.

EA gives gamers an early gift this holiday season with Dead Space 2 demo

Quote

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Dec. 8, 2010 – Dive into engineer Isaac Clarke’s blood-curdling adventure five weeks before release as Visceral Games™, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced a demo for the critically-acclaimed action horror game, Dead Space™2. The demo, available worldwide beginning December 21st, will allow players to discover the Church of Unitology and help Isaac defeat the Necromorph outbreak in a gruesome, unforgiving battle on The Sprawl. Winner of GameSpot’s highly-coveted ‘Best Xbox 360 Game’ of E3 award, Dead Space 2 will deliver the first big blockbuster title of 2011 when the title ships this January.

In the Dead Space 2 demo, players will take engineer Isaac Clarke on a terrifying adventure through the Church of Unitology, an expectedly “safe” place that quickly becomes dangerous and deadly, during the Necromorph outbreak on the Sprawl. Players will also have access to a variety of new tools that Isaac can use to fight Necromorphs, including the new Javelin gun, updated stasis recharge mechanic and enhanced telekinesis ability. Players will also experience the advanced suit, equipped with jets that will allow Isaac full 360 control in Zero-G space.

“The holidays are a great time to enjoy all forms of entertainment, and we can’t wait to give horror and action adventure gamers a taste of what awaits them in Dead Space 2,” said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer of the Dead Space franchise. “Releasing the demo five weeks before launch will not only re-connect players with our hero Isaac Clarke, but will also give them the opportunity to experience firsthand various jaw-dropping scenarios. It’s gonna be awesome.”

Dead Space 2 pushes the limits of action, horror and terror. After mysteriously awaking in a sprawling, massive city anchored to one of Saturn’s moons, hero Isaac Clarke again finds himself thrust into the middle of a relentless Necromorph outbreak. Surrounded by the screeching cries of undead monsters and the haunting drum of echoing noises, Isaac plots a course through The Sprawl. Dead Space 2 is set to deliver a truly epic terror experience that will bring the psychological thrills of deep space to a terrifyingly new level.

The Dead Space 2 demo will be available for download December 21 on Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace Worldwide and the PlayStation®Network in North America. The demo will be available December 22 on PlayStation®Network in Europe. Dead Space 2 will be available on Jan. 25, 2011 for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and the PC.

Metascore = 90

92 - PSM3 Magazine UK / Jan 13, 2011 /  It\'s beautiful, that goes without saying, and a relentless beast in combat. But more than that, it understands how players play - what they look for, listen to, and most of all what they expect. That\'s why, and this is a considerable achievement, it can genuinely scare you with a common sprinkler system.

90 - The Official Magazine (US) / Jan 14, 2011 / With meticulous polish, top-quality gameplay, and more than enough scream-like-a-little-girl moments, Space 2 surpasses the original in every capacity. Factor in its gruesome dismemberments and spectacular zero-G and there\'s truly nothing else like it.

90 - Edge Magazine / Jan 14, 2011 / The game\'s excellent controls and stream of grisly scares make it the current standard for survival horror, and it now boasts eruptions of blockbusting action that rival this generation\'s biggest games.

90 - Game Informer / Jan 10, 2011 / A monster of a sequel, offering bigger scares and more excitement than I expected... The tease for Dead Space 3 has my head spinning with questions.

Dead Space 2 IGN PS3 Review

Quote

Dead Space 2 is an amazing game. I\'m going to write about its scary moments, cool kills, and how much I dig the main character\'s internal struggle, but Dead Space 2 is about more than this. When I beat it for the first time, I sat on the couch with my heart racing and dissected the journey I had just taken. Then, I started my second playthrough, and when that was done, I jumped into a new game for the third time. Dead Space 2 is just that good...

Luckily, as I hope I\'ve already driven home, Dead Space 2\'s single-player is so good, you shouldn\'t question picking this game up. Plus, if you\'re grabbing this on the PlayStation 3, you\'re getting Dead Space Extraction as well. IGN\'s already signed off on the game being cool, so getting it in HD and supporting Trophies is a win. Plus, you can play it with PlayStation Move or your regular controller and both work well.

Dead Space 2 is more than just an action game and it\'s more than a survival horror game -- it\'s a game that tells a really personal story about a guy who has been seriously scarred by the events around him. That premise alone makes it interesting, but Visceral Games melds it with rewarding combat, shocking enemies, and huge set pieces before tossing it into a world that\'s truly creepy and scary. I didn\'t find multiplayer that interesting and would\'ve liked to have seen Isaac stop being an errand boy, but none of that spoils what you\'re getting here. The shocking moments, the gruesome deaths, and the fun of playing through this experience again and again are what I took away from this one.

Dead Space 2 is an excellent game, and it\'s well worth your time and money.

I finally finished this game...and it\'s an incredible intense experience.....and even tho some areas have some open environments because you\'re aboard a space station, you still have moments of tight dark corridors with creepy sounds and tons of atmosphere. I love how the people living in the space station are being multilated as you trek your way very early on in the game.

The gameplay is super smooth and the improvement to the O-Gravity segments is a move in the right direction....some folks might say it\'s more of the same, but the scares are the jump out in your face type boo-scares from the last game, but it\'s done amazingly well. I thought the first game was better than RE5...this game is better than the first in every way...issac has a voice and personality and the new weapons add a whole new variety to dis-member the necromorphs....visuals are amazing here as well.....i love survival horror and the Dead Space series has delivered again...highly recommended....:thumb:

2 questions clips:

How long did the game take you to beat? and how is the multiplayer?

As much as I loved DS1 and think its one of the best IP\'s of this generation, I was glad I just beat it in a rent instead of paying full price for it. After i beat the game I really didnt feel up to playing through it a second time..even when I thought I did after seeing DS2 was announced, I borrowed it from my brother but lost interest in playing through it after a while for one reason or another

I feel obligated to buy this game to support franchises that I love, but when its all said and done I have a feeling its not worth the purchase for me

maybe after a few paychecks ill stop being such a cheap ass

Viper, i can\'t comment on the multiplayer, since i don\'t do online....for me Survival horror type games are better in a single player setting, but i heard that the multi-player was fun if you\'re playing as a group of the soldiers, because of the weapons you have. I also heard it\'s not as fun to play as the necromorphs since you\'ll end up dying alot because you\'re basically overpowered by the guns of the soldiers.

It took me about 14-15 hours to beat and that\'s because i search every nook and cranny of each level and try to read all of the logs that i can find...this isn\'t the kind of game that you can run and gun either...i loved walking through the dark corridors walking slowly with my weapon ready.

If you lost interest in the first game, then you\'re most likely going to lose interest in this one...there\'s a bit more variety in the monsters and weapons, but what\'s seen here is more of what was seen in the last game, but i particularily don\'t have a problem with that, but just based on what you mentioned up above, i\'d say skip it in your situation, or at the very least rent it to see if it\'s to your liking...:fro:

finally got around to renting this and im about an hour and a half in (im taking my time, looking through all the rooms for goodies)

Im loving it so far. the beginning was an amazing sequence to get you into the game

My only problem right now is Im regretting playing on Normal since its been a bit too easy. My first playthrough I usually like to keep the difficulty down, enjoy the game, get engaged in the story, etc..and dieing a bunch or worrying excessively about having enough ammo at all times incase I unknowingly get to a part where I need a lot of ammo (aka, the room with the plants in DS1) can really kill a game for me

But i\'ve only died once because I had a dumb moment and only been hit once other than the time I died. and theres a LOT of ammo to pick up

Hoping it just gets more difficult as you progress.

normal ended up being a good difficulty. Getting hit once didnt ruin the game but was still enough of a challenge to keep it interesting

wouldnt really mind playing through it again eventually to unlock some of the extra stuff so it wouldve been worth a buy. 12 hours might not be a long game now-a-days, but for a linear game like this it was perfect.

Yeah...it was a pretty decent game...i\'m glad you stuck with it...i went back and got all of the upgraded suits...and that\'s the only way i play now...:D...the difficulty progresses at a balanced rate on normal...it\'s very easy in the beginning to get you used to the overall gaming mechanics.

Towards the end of the game tho, even on normal difficulty it starts to get a bit tough when they start throwung waves of enemies at you...even tho it was a bit more of the same, i like the fact that Issac has a voice, and everything was generally improved from the last game and you got a bit more of an insight on that Church of Unitology cult....i\'m looking forward to the next game...

I\'ve done two playthroughs, mainly to unlock achievements.  It was much easier the second time with fully upgraded weapons.

I like the new play mechanics they introduced in this game.  The zero g movement makes a lot more sense, and it was fun busting open windows to blow a few of the necromorphs into space.

Next up I have to start from scratch again on Hardcore mode.  That\'s going to be a pain because it only allows you 3 saves.  I heard its better to do this one first, and get the "foam finger" reward before going back and doing a Zealot mode playthrough.
