Kind of funny that yesterday the McGraw Hill CEO totally divulged info on the tablet a day before the announcement. Huge no no.... That\'s just beautiful. The bite is at the very end. 2:50 in. Then the reporter does what reporters do best. Make an idiotic comment.

Yeah, she makes a solid argument for the average technophobe.

In all 4 years of college, I never once bought a book and smelled it. That has to be one of the more idiotic things I\'ve heard a reporter say.

I prefer to do my reading on the most inexpensive portable device available, ya know, a book.
Still, it\'s neat to see Apple shaking up the industry, but I do worry about the future of the bookselling industry. There are a lot of people employed in that sector and they\'re all getting nervous.

Thought this was interesting:
Quote
NEW YORK (AP) — When Apple introduced the iPhone, it shook up the cell phone business but it also changed the way people play video games. About a quarter of the 100,000 applications that you can download to the iPhone are games, ranging from the simple "Doodle Jump" to a version of "Grand Theft Auto." Now, with the looming launch of a tablet-style computer — already nicknamed the "iPhone on steroids," with a bigger screen that might have a place in the living room — Apple could pose an even tougher challenge to established players in the video game business.
That assumes, however, that potential buyers aren\'t scared off by a price that might be more than the cost of a Wii, a PlayStation 3 and an Xbox 360 combined. Apple isn\'t commenting on its unveiling Wednesday.
Apple\'s iPhone and the similar iPod Touch brought a new look to games because they have an accelerometer inside that lets people control the action by turning or tilting the device. With a touch screen and the computing horsepower for high-quality graphics, the iPhone lends itself to pared-down versions of console games like "Assassin\'s Creed" and "The Sims 3." Its size, meanwhile, makes it easy to consume addictive puzzles in 5-minute increments while waiting for the dentist or riding the subway.
Now the iPhone, which costs $99, $199 or $299 plus a monthly service plan, rivals gadgets such as the Nintendo DS ($130-$170) or PlayStation Portable ($170-$250), known as the PSP, which were created solely for playing games on the go. It\'s unclear whether Apple has taken substantial market share away, but the iPhone likely introduced people to mobile games who wouldn\'t have played otherwise.
"We\'ve seen the iPhone and iPod Touch as kind of a starter kit for video games," says John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America. "When those customers are ready to graduate into a deeper experience, the PSP is there for them."
Soon a tablet may be there for them, too. A touch-screen gadget that is bigger than an iPhone could provide a larger playing field for gamers and give game developers a new way to push the limits of their creativity.
Update:
Quote
Pricing will start at $499 for the 16-gigabyte version, $599 for the 32-gig version and $699 for the 64, Jobs said.
Having 3G mobile access will cost an extra $130 on each, he said.
Unlimited 3G will be $29.99 a month after that.

Is there a reason why the iphone and now the ipad doesn\'t support flash?
Can you at least cut and paste? Or are they making that the groundbreaking new feature in it\'s first update?

The iPad is such an unfortunate name.
Two reasons why it doesn\'t support flash. First reason would be that it would kill their app market. Second, and a little more speculative is that apple is trying to get developers to concentrate on HTML5 for web content over Flash. If they can gain enough marketshare that views the web via their products, it\'ll force the developers hand into using HTML.

Thank god it\'s going to stay on AT&T.
Please keep apple products off Verizon and away from me.
I know, I heard the rumor that Apple might be releasing a Verizon version a year from now.

This thing would be great if I were an older businessman that traveled a lot. To be able to read, browse, email, movies in one small device that\'s really the perfect size for your lap on a plane is awesome. It\'s gorgeous for everything it does. Just not something I need. I\'d rather have a laptop at this point.
And the price.. Apple has never been one to come down in price really on much of anything. The first iPhone came down in price after a couple months, but that\'s really about it. Pretty amazing that they can come out with a quality aluminum/glass product for the low price.
Open a MacPro then open a Dell and you\'ll see why Apple is Apple.

"The iPad’s a new medium that will create a whole range of opportunities. Once people start exploiting what it can do, we may see the kind of creative renaissance that will deliver the next George Lois or Lee Clow. People will start subscribing to certain i-mags just for the ads alone.”
It\'s a neat device, sure, but this is the kind of talk that I hear from designers that make me want to choke them.

I can see an increase in "independent" writers though. Now people who can\'t get published by major companies can get picked up over the internet. Kinda like how illegal downloads increased the amount and popularity of independent bands in the music industry. This could be good for the writers themselves. Though those employed by the publishing industry will have to do some major adjustments.

Maybe T-mobile is the most customer-centric of them all, but it\'s way more popular in Euroland than US

People really don\'t seem to get what this is targeted as... it\'s not an iPhone and not a laptop, like a netbook it\'s inbetween. It doesn\'t do everything but what it does it does better then anything out there.
I for one am way excited over this.

I love mac, I own just about everything they make, but I just can\'t get behind this. Don\'t get me wrong, I\'d love to have one, but it just doesn\'t seem all that functional for what I\'d want it for, entertainment. If you want 3g support, it\'s extra, it has a reletively small hdd in the low end version, and NO FLASH? I\'ll just keep my macbooks and watch hulu with my tethered iphone (which also lacks flash). If mac could just get over this whole "flash uses too much system resources" and "adobe can\'t program for mac\'s and that\'s why flash 10.1 is buggy" BS, I\'d be a much happier person.

I understand that and completly agree. Netbooks don\'t make sense trying to copy the laptops using standard desktop style operating systems, yet aimed at light usage like web browsing, e mail and basic word processing. But the thing is, netbooks don\'t do any of those things well. They\'re worse in every way normal computers.
But there is a market for something that does those things, does it instantly and does it extremly well. The iPad does that and it does it stupidly well. There are times I like to do some light browsing while watching tv or something, I would definetly prefer an iPad over a full fledged laptop for something like that. I\'m also way excited over the iPad as a comic book reader.
And the app store will extend the iPad\'s functionality immensely just like it did the iPhone\'.
And the thing with Flash is.... it should die in a fire. Having a web standard controlled by one company is no good for anyone. It\'s a resource hog, those phones that have flash support slow down to a halt the second they start loading flash objects.
It might suck for the average consumer right now, but atleast Apple\'s taking a stand, if developers want their stuff to work for everyone including the millions of iPhone / iPod touch users, they should use HTML5 and the < video> tag. Hell it even works better, unlike flash the gpu on whatever device is being used will do the video decoding.
there\'s a lot of stuff there about the apple flash thing.

This girl I\'m seeing has only a netbook. I can\'t stand using it. Its so small. I move the mouse across the screen and the computer slows down. It barely runs youtube. Frickin youtube! And I can\'t see shit on the screen. If I need a computer to browse the web or check email, I\'ll stick with a laptop. They\'re not that much more expensive anyway. And if I need a smaller computer for travel, I\'d buy a smaller laptop.
