Title: Live 3D shoot
Post by: videoholic on March 05, 2010, 06:20:39 AM
Topic came up in another thread so figured I\'d throw some pics out at you.  I shot the Globetrotters last week for ESPN and they are testing live 3D.  It didn\'t broadcast in 3D, but they are just using it for a test.  The world cup in Johannesburg in the summer will have a ton of 3D content which is essentially the start of ESPN\'s new 3D channel.

In the first pic you can see the sky cam.  There are 3 lenses on it.  Top one is the one used for the 2D broadcast, the other two are the 3D.  They had a real tough time getting sky cam to match the other cameras.

2nd pic you see how the handheld rig works.  They have one camera firing normal through a one way mirror on a 45 degree angle.  Diopter....  They then fire another camera up at the mirror which allows the two lenses to be closer together than if they mounted the cameras side by side.  These two cameras are slaved together so the focal length, zoom and iris all precisely match.

3rd pic is a front view where you can see how close the lenses actually are together.

The high cameras I didn\'t get a shot of, but since they are long lenses, they look like Wall-E.  Two cameras side by side with long lenses.  The handhelds were bulky and weighed about 35 pounds.

It will be interesting to see where this goes in a couple years.  I mean hell, look what panasonic has coming out..

Pretty cool stuff. I haven\'t seen one of the new 3D movies yet so I don\'t know what I think of the tech. It\'s intriguing, though, but I do wonder about 3D glasses in the home...

Here is a shot in the truck.  I think everyone from Bristol was down, but I was able to get in there for a bit to get a shot.  You\'d get a headache before long if you didn\'t have glasses on.  They were just the Real 3D glasses you use at the movie theater.  No big whoop.

I think the most pressing and urgent question regarding this technology, the one that is on everyones lips, is when will this filter down to the porn industry?
