Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to Use New ‘Spectacular’ Game Engine

Quote

Bethesda Studios has clarified that the upcoming engine for Skyrim will be completely new – and promises a spectacular experience for players.

Given the graphical prowess the trailer showed (which you can see here), there’s no doubt that Bethesda put in a good amount of time updating the graphics. Known for their detail to landscapes, the thought of a brand new game engine rendering the world is a pretty enticing one – though no screenshots have been released yet, we can salivate in wonder. The game engine update wasn’t entirely unexpected, as even the newest form of it display in Fallout: New Vegas was beginning to show its age.

This announcement also brings into question how the chat system will work – one of the biggest complaints about Oblivion was the deadpan, emotionless stares speaking characters would often communicate with. It’s likely that a more dynamic, fluid approach has been implemented, and in unison with a sparkly-fresh rendering engine, many players are likely to gallivant off into the world and explore – and Bethesda is known for putting tasty treasures around the world for those willing to find them.

The new engine hasn’t been named yet,  but any engine capable of rendering such vast worlds is likely to attract attention from several game developers. We’ll probably be seeing its name spread across the news in the coming year – and the best tech demo any engine could possibly have would be something like Skyrim. No complaints here – sorry, Gamebryo Engine!

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is due for release November 11th, 2011

I dunno why but i could never get into these dragon, medieval, lord of the ring settings

I loved Mass effect but had zero interest in ever checking out dragon ages. Never really wanted to play the last elder scrolls after watching my brother play, even after all the praise it got

So even if this game kicks ass ill probably end up passing on it

The Technology Behind The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Quote

Radiant AI

The Radiant AI technology introduced in Oblivion went a long way toward making the NPCs act in realistic ways. If you followed a citizen through his daily activities, you would likely witness him or her eating breakfast, setting out to work the land, stopping by the pub for a pint after work, and then returning home to hit the sack.

In reality, the technology driving NPC behavior wasn\'t overly sophisticated. Bethesda could only assign five or six types of tasks to the townspeople, and there wasn\'t a lot of nuance to their actions. In Skyrim, the characters have much more defined individual personalities.

You won\'t find townspeople loitering aimlessly in town squares anymore. Each denizen performs tasks that make sense in their environment. To impart the towns and cities with a greater sense of life, Bethesda has populated them with mills, farms, and mines that give the NPCs believable tasks to occupy their day. In the forest village we visited during the demo, most of the citizens were hard at work chopping wood, running logs through the mill, and carrying goods through the town.

The improved Radiant AI technology is also more aware of how a citizen should react to your actions. As you perform tasks for them or terrorize them by ransacking their home, the NPCs develop feelings about you. If you\'re good friends with a particular NPC and barge into his house during the middle of the night, he may offer you lodging rather than demand you leave the premises. “Your friend would let you eat the apple in his house,” Howard says. If you swing your weapon near an NPC, knock items off their dinner table, or try to steal something of value, they\'ll react with an appropriate level of hostility given their prior relationship to you...

‘Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim’ Armor & Character Details Revealed

When it comes to modern RPGs, customization has quickly become one of the most rewarding and demanded systems for players to truly craft their very own character. Skyrim will be no exception according to Lead Artist Matt Carofano, with players given the chance to select from different hairstyles, face paints, and even a unique body shape ranging from light to heavy for each individual race.

Quick to avoid any accusations of favoring one gender over another, both male and female player types have been given completely unique animations, and a totally equal skillset at the start of the game. Similarly, different races each have their own unique passive abilities, like a Khajiit’s ability to see in the dark or a Redguard’s use of Adrenaline Rush.

Skyrim‘s Lead Designer Bruce Nesmith noted that other characters within the game world may voice certain biases toward one gender or racial group, those distinctions won’t affect the player’s ability to receive or complete quests. So with a similar set of choices open to every possible class, what reason would a player have to choose one over another? Nesmith explains:
Quote

“Your race is very important. It’s more than just how you look. Each race has a bias toward certain types of characters. If you want play a wizard, it will be easier with a High Elf or a Breton. If you want to play a warrior, it will be easier with a Nord or a Redguard. However, just like in Oblivion, we don’t force you to follow that bias. If you want to be a Nord wizard, that’s completely viable.”
