Getting a new computer for Battlefield 3 is still on my radar. But it\'s been about 5 years since I looked into this stuff, I was hoping to get a ball park figure from people who recently built a computer or builds them regularly
These are the specs people anticipate BF3 having:
Recommended System Requirements
Processor: Quadcore Processor
Memory: 4 GB
Hard Drive: 15 GB for Digital Version, 10 GB for Disc Version
Video Memory: 512 MB
Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
DirectX: 11
Keyboard and Mouse
DVD Rom Drive

I\'ll be getting everthing. Only have a 17" monitor so ill probably replace it iwth a better one. And I\'ll get a new case/mobo/etc
I\'d like to keep it under $2200. And I hear all the time from the pc crowd (usually yelling at the console crowd) that gaming pc\'s dont cost nearly as much as people think. Still, $1500 seems like it\'d be the bare minimum to get and thats still 4 times as much as a console so I dunno why they get upset when people assume that..but im going on a tangent
Any estimates?

it probably cost you $700 for 6 cores CPU from AMD Phenom II X6...
Its a Dell Studio XPS computer. But it doesn\'t include USB 3 connections though...the processor speed is 2.7 GHz each running at 6 cores. But you can customize it to 3 GHz or faster to your liking on dell\'s website...
Here is the link:

As for the screen, get an OLED monitor which i think will come out in the near future like next year or something...it has no viewing angle problems and it has infinite contrast ratio. It has very fast pixel response time too. Not sure how fast but i think its more than fast enough.
-
$900 is about all you\'d need to run BF3 comfortably (monitor not included). You could very well go over $1500 but you\'d be crossing the price-performance ratio line.
-
900 would be great. I\'ll have to look around a lot. I\'d ask my brother for help since he\'s built a few over the years but that guy spends way too much on stuff like that.
I did check some bf3 forums and a lot of them mentioned holding off till the official specs are announced. plus prices could drop a bit since it\'s still 5ish months till the game is out.
Just getting antsy after E3

those specs it won\'t be hard to build a i5 sandy bridge system with 6 gigs of ram... heck you could probably even do a SSD as a main drive to speed things up.
Without monitor you can easily do that for under 900... probably closer to 800. Don\'t go nuts on the case... i\'ve reused the case for 3 builds now for me, and i\'m waiting for official recommended specs for BF3 before buying anything. New cards from Nvidia and AMD coming out in the fall too... so hold off on any purchasing by now... worse case is the new parts are too pricey and what is high end now will be even cheaper by then.

I upgraded to a loaded core i7-based machine w/6gb ram back in 2009 and it cost me ~$900. I reused my Antec Sonata case and monitor, and I got a bargain GPU. I did splurge on an aftermarket CPU cooler though ($40).
Considering it\'s been over 2 years I imagine your dollar can go much further now.

i\'m at a crossroads with upgrading my computer. My quad core intel is still doing great, but it\'s nearind 4 years old and the new processors are like double the performance now...
I\'m tempted to just keep my current cpu, but buy a new board with two pci-e slots and get a second video card to run in crossfire. Two crossfired 6870\'s beat out a single gtx580 in most games...
decisions...

Bought the computer today. Should get it in a week or two
Intel® Core™ i7-2600K Processor (4x 3.40GHz/8MB L3 Cache))
[SLI] MSI P67A-GD65
8 GB [4 GB X2] DDR3-1333 Memory Module - Corsair or Major Brand (ill get 8 more gb down the road)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 - 1.2GB - Single Card
Kudos for jbean helping me out. Looking forward to playing more pc games. Bought deus ex today since it was 35 bucks at best buy and have had Stalker Call of Pripyat waiting to be played...on top of battlefield 3. And arkham city coming with the graphics card

sounds great man! let me know when you setup a battlelog account so I can add you to my friends list.
-
Better than my computer currently. I\'m running a somewhat similar quad-core with the same RAM but terrible video card and only 3.2 Ghz.. This beast only cost me $500 from off-the-shelf model at Best Buy.

Yea I still have to do that
2 questions:
1) Do I need another monitor to take advantage of the gpu\'s resolutions? I\'m still using this one from a long time ago http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/samsung-syncmaster-930b/4507-3174_7-31412295.html . Am I undercutting the new specs by not having a newer monitor?
2) Is it common for games to have a tough time using surround sound? I put my good surround sound on my consoles and put an old system on my pc..I\'m able to get the rear speakers to work in the sound blaster diagnostics, but they dont put any sound out on stalker: call of pripyat and itunes/youtube/etc. The only game I got them working on was battlefield 2. It didnt sound great so I\'m debating on getting a new system. I might wait till I get the new computer/bf3 though before deciding on that, especially when I\'m afraid of the back speakers not being used most of the time. If it sounds terrible I can use my headphones which are pretty good

eh..going to hold off on both a new monitor and speaker system
Just getting antsy waiting for the pc

Sorry to hijack vipers thread. I just wanna know if I buy these things, if they\'ll all work together like one big happy family. I think they are. I\'m next to positive they are but of course its always safe to get a second opinion. Mainly just wanna be sure that the GPU, CPU, HDD, and Mobo are all compatible.

Btw Viper your new rig looks fantastic. You\'re going to have a lot of fun :)
-
Yes those are all compatible, but you\'re forgetting the power supply.
-
Power supply is the only thing worth salvaging from the now defunk PC. Then again, that PS is from when I made the other one...I\'ll have to double check to be sure its adequate with all these new parts. Cheers all and thanks for looking through those links Evi.

get your new rig set up joker? if you\'re around, lol
I\'m definitely enjoying PC gaming again. Barely been using my PS3 and 360 lately but that\'ll change when mass effect 3 comes out. Mostly been playing Arkham City the last month, and now I\'m on to witcher 2. Want to get back into battlefield 3 but not enough time.
Witcher 2 is beautiful, btw. although it can be annoying as fuck, as jbean heard me complain
