Title: PS4 cheaper than expected?
Post by: Titan on February 19, 2013, 07:39:06 AM
Came across this rumor today. Apparently PS4 will cost 300 pounds or around 400 something dollars. That\'s a hundred dollars (approximately) less than the  PS3. This will be pretty sweet if it is true considering we were all expecting, with the hardware involved this generation to be at least if not more than double that. We shall see :)

Sony is looking to price the PlayStation 4 at "about" £300, according to British newspaper The Times.

"Industry sources and leaked internal documents suggest that Sony is considering pricing the new device at about £300, more than £100 cheaper than the starting cost of its predecessor," says The Times. The PlayStation 3 launched in the UK for £425.

£300 works out at approximately $464, though hardware in the US is traditionally priced a bit cheaper than in the UK.

But The Times\' report also says Sony won\'t be announcing the price or the date of the PlayStation 4 at its PlayStation Meeting 2013 event in New York on Wednesday, and will instead be waiting for Microsoft to show its hardware before coming to a final decision.

"Because company executives want to see Microsoft\'s updated Xbox before PS4\'s release, Sony is unlikely to reveal exact prices or dates for the new PlayStation at next week\'s event," says the newspaper.

The Times also says Sony\'s PlayStation 4 will be able to support the "new generation of ultra-high definition [4K] televisions" alongside earlier rumours such as cloud streaming and a touchscreen controller.

Sony\'s PlayStation Meeting will take place in New York on February 20 at 18:00 EST/15:00 PST/23:00 GMT. GameSpot will be in attendance and broadcasting the event live.

Hilarious!!!..........even after all these years, you cats have not missed a beat...:D

On another note, i\'ve noticed that nothing has been said about the blocking of used games,...i wonder if that is still a game mechanic implemented with this new system...i\'m sure sony is probably waiting for MS to show their hand.

As far as pricing goes? Well Sony would be shooting themselves in the foot if they went with another $600.00 pricepoint, but the tech they are using now is set-up like a pc and much cheaper and easier to develop on, so it looks like sony has learned it\'s lesson in that regard.

Regardless of that, i think $450.00 (while alot cheaper than $600.00) is still kinda steep...i won\'t be standing or camping out for one of these things and the leap in visuals is not really that big of a difference, so i can wait until the price drops on this thing...i\'m still very happy with the ps3.

Good to see Sony at least has learned it\'s lesson....their arrogance hurt them tremendously with the ps3 and MS came up from behind and took that marketshare away from them....still from what i\'ve seen, i don\'t think MS is worried about the ps4 at all.

I watched parts of the Sony meeting. While the games look cool and they to me seem like a huge step in the right direction (though I do admit only seeing them on YouTube), its definitely not leaps and bounds ahead in terms of graphics. High end PCs can do what they were showing now. But, I assume, like any console generation, as things progress, the graphics and potential will be tapped into. I\'m sure the games they showed are just scratching the surface.

clips, agree with you 100%. Though I don\'t think either console has anything to worry about. At this point, they\'re going to be pretty even. Besides, most gamers who have one console have the other too. I don\'t but that\'s because I\'m poor :( May pick up a used 360 so I can play the Halo series though. But with the rumor it may be going to Steam, I may hold out for now :)

Anyone see the video for Destiny? Been starting to follow that game. It looks sick as hell. They said it was coming out for PS3 and PS4. I think if its going to be as good as they say and suck you into the world, I\'d rather have it on PS4.

Yeah..i agree..there are a couple of games that are coming out alongside the ps3, and when it comes to those games (Watchdogs/Destiny..etc)...i think i\'m going to hold out and wait for the ps4 versions, even tho i think the ps3 versions will be solid as well.

I forget. Is Destiny coming out for PC too? If so and I don\'t have a PS4 yet, I may just get it for PC.

Its weird. I\'ve always thought it would be fun just once in my life waiting in line for something like a PS4. Just to say I did it once. Though if this comes out in November, I don\'t feel like waiting in the cold and rain :)

I did it for the PS2. All nighter. By dawn, more people started arriving like zombies....but they were too late. Target had already given out all the vouchers  for their stock. Man, they were pissed. They wanted to kill us.

Each of us was offered a security escort back to our cars after we got our PS2s. :)

I played SSX all day long until I passed out from the sleepless night prior.

I got my PS2 Christmas of that year. It was still very hard to get. My mom told me the story and she happened to go into the Wiz I think it was, and she ended up getting the last one. The guy said they were all out and he said he was going to check the back to see if there were any more and there was one sitting in the back. You know, now that I thin k about it; how fucking funny would it be if some guy who worked there stashed it back there and the guy went back and found it and sold it to my mom.

Either way, when I opened it, I  hugged the box, took the 2 games I got (SSX was one of them I think), ran into my room, hooked it up and played all day and night until I had to go back to school 10 days later. Even though it broke, I still have that PS2 :)

I think Juslight and another buddy of ours pulled an all-nighter. I ended up getting mine as one of those stupid bundle deals, where I paid way more than I should have.

I think I need to see the price and the lineup of games first before I decide to pull and all nighter. I\'m not too stoked for the games currently in the lineup for launch. Though if Destiny launches, maybe :shy:

if a tablet is 600 or more I don\'t see how the ps4 can be so cheap unless sony wants to lose even more money off this thing. I am expecting a 499.99 price tag and I consider that to be damn good.

i doubt it will be $500 but might be $300 to $400.

look at the xbox360 when it first launched back in Nov 2005, it has that $300 and $400 price tag for 2 models.

the ps3 have similar specs and performance of the xbox360, well maybe the ps3 is slightly more powerful than the 360 a tiny bit, but because the blu-ray was recently launched that year of 2006 which makes it $200 more expensive on the ps3.

nowadays, the blu-ray drive are very cheap compare to when it first came out over 6 1/2 years ago.

And using PC components this time around definitely will keep the price down. One problem Sony had was they tried to jam pack it with tech. Not only did they launch with blu-ray which jacked up the cost they also put the Cell processor in which also drove up the cost which was expensive to develop and difficult to develop games for. Microsoft stuck more with PC components so the price point was cheaper. Good to see Sony learned from their mistakes and put in PC components to keep cost and ease of development in check. Really seems they took the components and figured out how to squeeze every ounce of power out of them as well as make them efficient. Or so it seems on how they frame their architecture.

I\'ll never be an early adopter because of the problems they tend to have. But some of the games have looked really good. Curious how theyre going to handle it though since I could see a LOT of people sticking with their ps3 for longer than people that stuck with their ps2.

But killzone 4 looked really good
