I know this is a PS2 forum, but with only 3 games in history to get a perfect score from this publication, I figured the news was too big to pass up. I also am aware there are many Dreamcast owners here, and I know you wouldn\'t be more estatic then knowing you will be able to pick up this masterpiece within only a few months time. Enjoy :)
Following my other topic, the actual numerical score has now been confirmed: 40/40, PERFECT.
http://www.dailyradar.co.uk/news/game_news_1486.html (http://www.dailyradar.co.uk/news/game_news_1486.html)
Ranking in with Soul Calibur and Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Phantasy Star Online just ranked in as one of Famitsu\'s three greatest games of all time.
Before Zelda\'s N64 debut in November of 1998, no game had ever received 40/40 from Japan\'s definitive gaming magazine, Famitsu. Almost a year later, Namco came out with the second title ever to receive this high acclaim, Soul Calibur.
In this week\'s issue of Famitsu, Sonic Team\'s Phantasy Star Online became the pinnacle in multi-player console RPGs with the third 40/40 ever to be awarded by the magazine.
Due to hit Japanese shelves on December 21st, we\'re confident that the Dreamcast\'s latest triple A title will have Japanese gamers drooling nation wide. A US and European release will follow on February 23rd with online and offline gaming available to anyone lucky enough to get their hands on a copy.
-
Just for intrest, what were the other games to get 40/40?
-
Zelda & Soul Calibur... didn\'t you read the quote?
-
Yuji Naka and his team have done it again! Can\'t wait for this one.
-
when does it arrive???? UIn the US?
-
I thought Vagrant Story got 40/40.Or was it a different mag?
Phantasy Star kicks ass anyways.
-
Congratulations and happy gaming!

Vagrant Story just missed a perfect score, as did Virtual On OT.
That is great though, 2 DC games out f 3 are ranked as perfect! This is very respected magazine among the japanese public. Maybe this will spark a few hundred sales. Which will, sadly, bring the total to about 400. Damn people avoid every great game out their and instead by weird crap like Dancing sims and stuff. :(
All I gotta say, with a score this good, this game better sell over 300,000 in Japan. Which, a the time, would be very good for DC, cause I know it will complete upto million status with American sales, IMO we are not as blind to good games out here. :)
Let\'s go ahead and say 450,000, shall we :) After all, it is a PERFECT score. Let\'s see what JapanDC and FamitsuDC give it though :)

jejej, PSO 40/40? :D :D :D then FFX? I think it will be 50/40... isn“t it? :D :D
-
It aint looking good, the series on average has been getting just good scroes, not excellent, or none at all were perfect. I don\'t expect them too, unless they can dream up a way to not make the damn games be boring with no direction. I, along with many other people, can\'t stand battling every 2 steps witha random battle. They need to go the Chrono Trigger/Grandia way, in which you can see the guy who may or may not attack you.

Actually, Final Fantasy 9 has been receiving rave reviews - even from diehard old FF fans that hated FF7 and 8.
-
yeah, I know, I forgot to add that.
Many of my friends love FF9. They all think FF7 is the best (not true, 6 is the best by far), but they think this one is VERY good, definetly better than 8. their are still some flaws though, they say.
Anything is a step up from 8 though, you know you NEVER need to use magic in the game or even bare attacks after you get a few GF\'s. THe game is pretty pointless, GF, GF, GF, etc. This new one has a much better forumla.

I was pretty sure Vagrant Story got 40/40 too. I remember it was all over the IGN when that happened. They were saying how Famitsu only ever gave this to 2 games, as mentioned above.
I even remember reading Famitsu\'s top 40 games ever rated in their magazine. They actually placed Vagrant Story at the #1 spot and gave Zelda: OoT the #2 spot.
Anyway Phantasy Star Online is going to be way awesome when I buy it. Can hardly wait. My DC is aching for it right now. It\'s bored with Shenmue and is playing Code Veronica but wants something more ONLINE.
-
Goodness. This reminds me of the Genesis days when you couldn\'t keep up with all the great games for Sega.
-
WHEN DOES IT COME OUT????
-
can anybody give me an overview of how it will work?
are there levels? is there an ending? are there trade skills? how will it be compared to everquest?
any help is apreciated :)

Lets see what Square does with a 128bit machine before we say it ain\'t looking good. I\'m sure Square has some incredible ideas to take advantage of next gen hardware, they\'ve been stcuk in the 32 bit world for a long time you know they have a bunch of stuff they\'ve beeen dying to do with the series that just wasn\'t possible on previous platforms - PC

I agree with ddaryl, look at all they\'ve accomplished with just a 32 bit console... PS2 4x the bit rate, a billion times the everything else... Oh my god, I have a feeling the characters will look... well REAL!

Cool! YOu go Phantasy Star Online! Finally Dreamcast is not like some crabs some fanboy say it is. Hopefully Dreamcast can stay alive competing with ps2 and x-box and i want lunchcube to died really bad!

How does an RPG work online? Can it only be played online with other people? I don\'t quite understand how it would work but I would like to. I love RPGs and if this got a perfect score I definately don\'t want to pass it up.
-
It plays online and offline. Some of the missions, including new ones you can download, can only be played online. I hear it plays sort of liek Diablo. But I don\'t know, never played it. But, IGN gave it EXCELLENT previews.
Graphics do not matter, Ddaryl or SyxxKorn. It is about RPG fundamentals. In my opinion there is always something lacking in their games that gives them a below 40 or even 39 or 38. Maybe the gross over-use of random battles. or the in FF8, the fact that you don\'t really have to use magic, just GFs all the time. The confusing storylines. The severe concentration on how the game looks, than how it plays.
I am going to go on and bet that FF10 does not even get a 38. I am saying if Square sticks with their formulas for the nmext FF, it will be just that, ANOTHER FF. Nothing new, nothing exciting (besides, of course, the pretty graphics), same ole random battles, etc. That is why I look forward to new RPG series. Or ones at the start of their sequelization when they still have some fresh ideas or storys. Like Grandia Series, Lunar Series, Phantasy Star Series, Shining Force Series, Chrono Trigger Series, Valkyrie Profile, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue (sort of an RPG :)) etc.!

Dude I wasn\'t talking about graphics, graphics are a given. I was talking about gameplay, there is so much that can be done from a gameplay standpoint that could never even be approached on a PSX, and I\'m 100% positive over the years that brought us FFVIII FFVIII FFIX, Chrono cross, Xenogears, Front Mission, and Vagrant Story among other extremly cool Square games that these guys had a billion and 1 gameplay ideas where they just wished they had a machine capable of doing it.
So I get extremly aggravated with you and your inability to see outside of your DC box and assume the only thing I\'m talking about is graphics. YOur also losing alot of credibility by even thinking that Square won\'t come out with something different, this isn;t the PSX this is a machine 30-50x\'s more capable than the PSX. Random Battles in the 32 bit era we\'re a product of lack of memory and processing power. Sure there is going to be random encounters but I\'m sure they will be more fitting do to the above reasons.
and yes I look forward to new RPG games and Action based games as well, but to say Square is just going to make a stereotypical FF game the same as they have for the original PSX or NES is insane, its extremly naive. Its like saying you expected PSO to be the same game as the orignals. Obviously its not, and why is that, its because the hardware allowed for new avenues to be explored.
UGHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Yes, if we\'re especially lucky, Square\'s leap from 32 to 128bit will be almost as incredibly..... as their leap from 16 bit to 32 bit

In my opinion, The Series has just gotten worse from 6. 6 was the high, a great game. Way too many random battles. But just a fantastic Storyline.
What is a bigger processer going to do other than graphics and grahpics realted stuff? really though? You dont need math in an RPG. calculations are out of it. I don\'t think there will be an improvement to series with PS2. I have avoided the series since I disliked 7 and 8. and I played through both. They just werent good in my opinon. ANd why is Red, the last of his generation, thei with all his kids and crap at the end of the game? what the hell is up with that.
So, the series will go unchanging. WHat new opitons and things have they added to the late ones to make them better? oooooohhh, no MP, whoopdeedoo.
Vagrant Story is much better, it uses alot of things FF wish they could.
It is very feasible to not expect PSO to be like the orignals, but what has really changed in all these sequels of FF. PSO is ONLINE. That is a big change, and they arent focusing on Motavia or Mother Brain, Dark Falz, etc. But what is FF changing?

I\'m sure you can work it out for yourself. Have you ever played FF6? If you have you should know that the \'power\' of the system has NOTHING to do with the quality of the games on it.
If anything, the newer hardware has inspired Square to concentrate less on the story and gameplay, and instead devote their time to 5 minute summon spells.

PSO didn\'t get a 40/40.

Update: Phantasy Star Online Receives a Nearly Perfect Score From Famitsu
By Shane Bettenhausen
Updated December 13, 2000 7:31 PM PST
Prior to each week\'s magazine release, Famitsu.com announces which titles received awards in the upcoming issue. This week, the big winner is Sega\'s Phantasy Star Online, as Famitsu awarded it the coveted Platinum award (a total score of at least 35/40). Earlier today we reported that other sites had listed a perfect 40/40 score for PSO, but the true score is 37/40. We apologize for linking to erroneous information.
This ruling bodes well for this hotly anticipated game, as many naysayers have worried that online RPGs would lack the narrative punch and compelling gameplay of their single-player counterparts. U.S. gamers will get their chance to enter the world of PSO in January.
However, a 37/40 is still a great score!!! But not perfect.
Oh, and I\'m pretty sure Vagrant Story got a 40/40 in Famitsu. I have no idea what Daily Radar UK was smoking.
-
SimChoy, that\'s not what I SAW!!!!!
-
Can You play that game offline too?
I have a Hong Kong DC (without Modem).BTW,are those Modems sold seperately anywhere?
Please help.

Snap out of it Altered Beast. Maybe they will goto a more relatime battle system and who knows what else. You are extremly naive to think Square is just going to make FF with prettier graphics, Actually its your biased DC Brain that makes you think like that. Its absurd, and laughable. I\'m quite confident we will see quite a bit of upgrades in the series besides graphics
And Cereal Rapist You need to snap out of it to, the jump from 16 bit to 32 bit saw the jump from 2D to 3d. Now I know FF series always maintained some 2D aspect but the worlds in FFVII FVIII and FFIX were larger. And Included 3D elements. The Story in FFVII was great, and FFIX is said to be one of the best if not the best.
Writing off Squares FF series with the FF movie around the corner and the popularity of series is laughable. I\'m quite confident Square will show off a great game. It might not receive a 40 but who cares of the games that got perfect scores form Famitsu I didn\'t like
