Title: Because..
Post by: Living-In-Clip on December 13, 2000, 02:14:40 PM
Whats with everyone thinking one company can make or break something? Square, SONY. Now everyone is throwing a fit about EA. I\'m just curious, on exactly how people can figure one company can keep a system alive.

Sega is keeping their Dreamcast alive. If it weren\'t for all their AAA titles, the DC would have died for lack of games. Same with Nintnedo. Durring the drought of games early in the N64\'s life, Nintnedo\'s franchise titles kept the machine alive.

There are exceptions to the rule, however, EA is not a "Make or Break" company. Neither is Square, Capcom, Konami, or Namco. It is a conglamoration of those companys, and others of their calibur, who make or break a system. Sony still has all the developers (Oddworld aside), and all the momentum. Xbox & Gamecube have just begun to pick up momentum. It will take a lot more than one company\'s support to topple the market Sony is, thus far, set to dominate again.

Remember, it dosen\'t matter who get\'s the games.. it\'s who gets the most games that is the bigger factor in weither or not a console is a success.

Nintendo is the only company I know of that can produce enough games to singlehandedly make a console a moderate success.

I wonder how well N64 would\'ve fared without AKI and Rare.  Seriously.  Nintendo has got some damn good 1.5 party help.

As far as Dreamcast - they\'ve got some outside help too.  Capcom for one.  They also got a nice port of Tony Hawk 2 - if that had been exclusive to Dreamcast, damn.  Not too mention other titles like TD LeMans and Quake Arena.  Sega still has over 130 third parties developing for it.  Their third party support isn\'t as pronounced because it isn\'t as prevelant as Sony\'s.  Sega has a LOT of first party titles.  Sega has more first party titles than most third parties have!  Also more than Nintendo.  VF3tb, VO:OT, Sega Rally, Daytona, NFL2k1, NBA2k1, NHL2k, WSB (ugh), Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, Sonic, Sonic Shuffle, F355, etc etc etc.

When I think of DC support my head thinks of Capcom straight off. Capcom seems so alive with the DC hardware. We are seeing shooters from them, RE games, fighters and it goes on. Its amazing.

if you knew how many copies of games such as Final Fantasy, Tomb Raider, Metal Gear Solid, and for us sport freaks: ANY EA sports title then you would realize how a company can keep a system alive.  It\'s the big name games which sell and that directly coincides with the success of a system.  If you don\'t have a money title then why would you want to buy that system.  I am a 100% pure unadulterated sports freak and the system of choice for me is Sony.  The reason being is that I will only play sports titles from EA sports.  I love the depth of there games, the excellent attention to the small details of a sport, and the excellent gameplay.  Now I know there are 989 fans and they feel the same way i do about there sports titles with the exception of GameDay 2001 for the PS2 which we all can agree is a P. O. S.  Now with that in mind it is quite easy what system to buy.   For me that would be Sony.  Sega doesn\'t have EA, which by the way is a big strike against them and you sports fans know what I mean and the PS2 is a more up to date and powerful system.  Why would I want a DC.  It can\'t deliver what I want.  I can\'t wait to see what x-box will deliver with EA signing on.  I might have to get one.  Maybe this will show you how a company can keep a system alive.  If they have the titles that the majority want to play then that system will flourish. Get it????????

The first GameDay on PSX rocked! But then, 989 messed it up, as they do with ALL good franchises. Man, Ihate that company. Only good thing out of them was Syphon Filter.

I think EA are a bunch of assholes.

(EA rep.) "We will develope for the DC after it sells 500,000 units.

::500,000 units sold::

(EA rep.) "We will develope for the DC after it sells 1,000,000 units.

::1,000,000 units sold::

(EA rep.) "We have decided not to develope for the DC for 2 reasons.  It does not have the userbase we desire.  And we are kissing Sony\'s ass so much that that we don\'t need fans to get us money."

to altered beast, "i appreciate your not having to resort to flaming and personal attacks.  Thankyou.  that is what I had been trying to tell you all along.

to lord of darkness:  there is a solution to your problem.  I you love EA games as I do then all you have to do is get a PS2, which brings me to the subject of where do your priorities lie.  why do you choose the console you choose?  I choose PS2 because of EA sports and that is the dominant reason, that and the DVD capabilities.  I don\'t want a DC because EA doesn\'t make for it.  I could care less what system I play as long as EA makes for it, and i am sure RPG\'ers feel the same way about SQUARE.  you should pick your game console soley for the games that you LIKE to play.  I don\'t work for any of these companies so I have no loyalty to a corporation and most if not all of you do either.  ea is making for the x-box.  Will i get an x-box????? well let\'s just say the door will be left open.  There are games the DC has that I like ie. Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi but there are so many more titles that are on the PS2 that I like more and of Course there is the whole EA issue.

I consier any game from a second party a Nintendo developed game, so when I say Nintendo can make a system survive on tehir own I mean with Rare and all their other second parties, with all of their exlusive and gaurenteed games rather than with third parties, I\'m not talking about just EAD, although they could come close.

Amen to that. I bought the first Gameday and loved it. Then they started screwing up a ton of good games and now I\'m not sure why Sony bought them.

The last generation of consoles were unevenly tipped towards the Playstation......

This time it\'s gonna be different

None of us know what\'s really gonna happen....
I agree Nintendo is the only company that can maybe pull through by itself, but.......
The second and third party developers are a MUST.
Playstation had a mess of good games, but a pile of crap games

The N64 had less really good games, but had a lot less of the crap that the PS had.

None of these companies are gonna make it through without truly good second and third development parties this time. NONE.
I Like Sony, BUT I go where Square goes.
And I know I won\'t be the only person like this.(Although it may not be for Square.)

You\'re correct ChocoboSquared. 3rd and 2nd party developers are needed for good success of a certain console. I think Nintendo is gathering more this time around with its GC than N64; they\'re repairing their mistakes.

But to this subject. I don\'t personally see nothing wrong in multi-format-developers. Heck, if every company would be an exclusive, there wouldn\'t be so many games towards one console. It\'s much better this way.

Of course big game-developers with money ( square, EA, capcom, konami etc. ) want the freedom to jump around consoles; they have enough money to split the team into parts. One part concentrates only to PS2, one to GC, one to X-box, one to DC ( this is just an example ). Remember that this is only possible by great amount of money.

But, that\'s because.. ;)

I am definately a Sony and Square fan but if Square dumps sony for X-Box (which will never happen) then I would say ****em and stick with my PS2

Never say never. They are still a third party developer, even if Sony has stock in them. They could if they wanted to. They probally won\'t. But, no one said they would leave Nintendo for the new comer at the time, which was Sony.

Well, I beleive that Nintendo has the strongest 2nd party support, and I think that this is gonna help them in the long run. They\'ve got excellent 2nd parties like Rare, Retro, Silicon Knights, Left Field, Brownie Brown (stupid name, but hey, they\'re made up of ex-square employees), etc.
I think that 3rd parties will be much more evenly spread out than in the last generation, with not many exclusives. It looks to me like 2nd parties are gonna be the determining factor for this next generation.

Oh did I give the impression that I liked EA?  I just hate the fact that they lied and had never intended to develope in the first place.  Bunch of pricks who think they have the power to destroy a system.  Oh no I do not like EA in the slightest.
