Title: I just cannot bond with Timesplitters - Why?
Post by: on December 14, 2000, 03:16:48 PM
I have had a little play with it but I don\'t like it and I am sad about this. It took ages to bond with FFVII so maybe there is hope.
Anyone got any encouragement or advice?

First of all, money is made out of a type of LINEN. Not basic run of the mill cotton

Give it some time and patience. Are you having trouble with the controls? I find them to be very tempermental, and it took awhile before I felt comfortable, and was succesful, with maneuvering. It can be a great game, albeit very frustrating, and can be worthy of your time if given the chance. If you can anticipate your next target, usually from repeatedly dying (that\'s the frustrating part), things might shape up. Or you might have to face the reality that you and TS just don\'t gel. Good luck, and welcome to the forums.

I will give it another go. It\'s good to hear that it\'s not just me that found it hard to handle.

Its an alright game, I\'m not blown away by it either, The story mode is merely some filler and a way to up your skills, the real fun is playing multi player and developing your own levels.

Ah I see, multi player? I will look at it again. I must admit I tried it out at the weekend and put it back in the case after 30 mins. Cheers

Well the story mode wasn\'t that bad, and 1/2 hour is no where enough time to get up to par with the controls.

Start off in easy mode, thats what I did, I\'m still trudging  my way though normal mode. The game offers a tremendous challenge if thats what your into

Yeah, the controls can be frustrating at first, but keep at it. I dreaded using both sticks at first but now my friends and I agree that it\'s an awesome setup. I\'ve never felt more maneuverable in a console FPS. If that\'s what\'s holding you back, try going into a deathmatch by yourself (set the bots to custom and leave it empty.) Then just run around and try shooting at various targets, strafing side-to-side, etc. Also, get some other people into it if at all possible; this game is a hundred times better in multi-player mode. And if you\'re feeling frustrated, you can take comfort in the fact that just about everyone here who\'s played it agrees the difficulty of this game is set pretty high. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Timesplitters multiplayer is so much fun!  That is why Timesplitters is one of my favorite PS2 games.  I have heard that some people have a hard time picking up the controls, but you just need to practice and you\'ll get them down.

Don\'t feel bad man. I couldn\'t bond with the game at first, but after I got use to the controls it was simple full-filling mayhem. The graphics wasn\'t overly exciting but the simple fun of it all is worth it.

btw - Didn\'t want to start a whole new thread for this so - was anyone else disappointed that the controls didn\'t include a \'jump\' button? It just seems weird that you can move anyway you want but you can\'t do a simple jump. Heck, even Disruptor on PS had that as a basic control. Maybe they\'ll put it into the sequel?

Also, anyone notice that the windows regenerate after you shoot them in deathmatch? (That\'s probably why my friend got the \'vandalism\' award...)

With the fast paced action of TS, u dont really need a jump button :)

True, but it would\'ve been a nice addition. I just thought it would be fun to nail someone in mid-air while they\'re scrambling to avoid my assault shotgun. Just an idea.

btw - I currently hold the record in my group for most kills in three seconds - I somehow managed to bag 8 in a row(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcwm.ragesofsanity.com%2Fs%2Fut1%2Fplasmawhore.gif&hash=4acf5f75bb6383bfd9b78f85eb358d0d8e394169) (this was during a very intense deathmatch with many bots running around.) Can anyone else beat this, or even come close?

Extracted from a interview PSM2 had with David Doak, one of the lead designers on Timesplitters --

\' What made you decide not to include a jump button, and why doesn\'t the game allow players to roll as the computer can?

We have never been fans of jumping in first-person games. It seems to me that there are a couple of very good reasons not to implement jump. Firstly, it can quite easily become an evade button in Deathmatch sceanrios and suddenly the game turns into a mad pogo-ing session.

Also, any kind of precision jumping involves continually looking down in order to position your imaginary feet correctly which is very dull. In single-player levels jumping promotes stupid jumping \'puzzles\' - in Half Life the most annoying parts of the game were based around jumping. In any case. Timesplitters is certainly not lacking in ledges to jump off and windows to crash through - all perfectly achievable without the aid of a jump button. \'

Thanks for the info. At least they had reasons for not putting it in. Guess they figured the game would be difficult enough without putting in hard-to-reach spots that would require acrobatics to attain. Oh, well, still a kick-butt game.

Thanks bd.

It just takes a while to get used to ( I quess :) )

Because I have played FPS games with jump button since Duke Nukem 3d :)

Well, it isn\'t a bad flaw; at least they showed some reasons ;)

I was absolutely sceptic about this game, as I was one of the few that absolutely hated goldeneye (to my surprise - i thought it was crap!!).

But I was curious nonetheless, so I hired it out from blockbuster, and I was well addicted to it, so I bought it today wit an extra contoller and a mem card (so I can finally bloody save my stuff)
