Title: To all Dreamcast owners in this board
Post by: Lynx on December 15, 2000, 12:32:46 AM
Yes Yes I realize this is a ps2 board..and no I am not in anyway am trying to bash the ps2.  Ok..to my question..I dont own a dreamcast..and I dont own a ps2.  I will buy a ps2..whenever its avaliable..I gave up trying to aquire one a long time ago..it just wasn\'t worth waking up early in the morning every day only to get rejected..I know its going to be serveral months until I can actually go into a store and casualy buy one..but I\'m willing to wait that long..a couple of months isn\'t going to hurt me.  Now..the dreamcast on the other hand is avaliable now..I can go buy one right now if I wanted to..but the thing is..there really isn\'t a game that grabs my attention..nothing that says "Buy me now!"  I just want to know what am I missing..I have played a bit of shenmue..it looks like a great game..just takes up alot of time..but that is probably must buy game, but one game isn\'t enough to make me buy a system.  So..I\'m asking you guys..the dreamcast owners..and probably ps2 owners too..if It would be wise to pick up this system.  I like fighting games and rpgs..Marvel vs capcom is fun..but I played both 1 and 2 to death in the arcade..so I dont really want to buy those.  Ugh..I just cant decide.

Well..first off Soul Caliber..I really do prefer tekken..and though soul caliber is a great game..tekken is the only game I play for hours on end.  BUT..I never actaully sat down and played soul caliber..I only played against a friend, so I probably should give that a chance.

I would probably buy Shenmue..but like I said before...one game isn\'t enough

Virtual on...hmm I played the saturn version..is was ok..but the thing is..Z.O.E is kinda getting my attention in the mech department

Now hopefully PSO will be a good game..I\'m sure it will..but its not coming out till next year..and I\'m already waiting for a ps2..I dont want to wait for a game to justisy my purchase of a DC :(

I\'m glad you responded though..I\'m currently just looking at a list of avaliable DC games..hopefully I\'ll find a few that will make me want to buy the system.  Some of you might be wondering why I would want to buy one..the thing is..I just hate missing an oppertunity to play good games...and apperently the DC has a alot...according to sega fans.

are you really finding it that difficult to get your hands on a PS2
are PS2 stocks really THAT limited where you live
here in perth aus PS2\'s are readily available from alot of stores
anyway, you say that there is nothing on DC that says, "buy me now!"
yet it seems like, if you could, you would go out and purchase a PS2 tomorrow
so what is presently out on PS2 that warrants a "buy me now!", in your opinion
just curious
i have a PS2 sitting under the xmas tree
but, if you compare DC and PS2 based purely on the variety and quality of games available for each system NOW (mid-dec 2000)
DC probably has more reasons to "buy me now!" than PS2

Lynx, so OK, the games he neamed dont quite appeal to you (although VooT is one hellova game), there are PLENTY of other games that are sure to please you very much.

Since im not a Fighter fan...AeroWIngs Airstrike 2 caught my attention with the replay cam that allows you to remake Top Gun movies...Gundam 0079 is terribly underrated too.

Nope Lynx, looks like DC isn\'t for you.

Don\'t get me wrong, there are some good games for it, but it doesn\'t look like any of them will appeal to you.  Get yourself a PS2 and enjoy ZOE, GT3, and MGS2 and a slew of other good games.  Have fun :)

Everybody has their own preferences.  What genre\'s do you like?

Anyway, here\'s what I\'ve been playing: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (best game on DC), NFL2k1, NBA2k1, Marine Fishing, Quake Arena, Gunbird 2 (vert shooter), Cannon Spike, UFC.  Name a genre though, that would help.  Rent some games before you decide.  Personally, I think it\'s worth it for $150 (you can find it for $120 used).  I mean, geez.  175 games to choose from, and a lot of really good titles.  But if you can only afford one, then be careful.

Fighting and Rpg\'s ehh?

DC is your system for the current moment.  It has a slew of fighting games that Soul Grind mentioned.

On RPG\'s, DC has two of the best.  Skies of Arcadia is amazing, my favorite RPG ever.  Grandia 2 is equally satisfying and worthy of purhcase.  Both will keep you busy for 40-50 hours each.  Then PSO comes out Jan. 23, plenty too do.

Others worth of mention,

Jet Grind Radio- this is a must own for anyone with a DC.
Ecco- very hard and long but rewarding.
Shenmue - best game ever, IMO.
D2- very short but sweet.
MDK2- hard, hard, hard, but rewarding.
Soul Cally-awesome game, had it since 9.9.99 and still play.
Dead or Alive 2- very flashy and fun with friends.
Space Channel 5- best presentation and style EVER! Fun too!
Four Wheel THunder- gorgeous racer, lots of tracks and fun!
Hydro Thunder- you\'ve played the arcade I\'m sure, perfect port.
Rayman 2- very good adventure game, looks amazing.
Test Drive Lemans- Eyecandy and substance, awesome game.
Crazy Taxi- for 20 bucks it\'s gold!
Sonic Adv.- 20 bucks, good stuff.
Seaman- unique...
Resident Evil:CV- best RE in my opinion, looks great but plays like the others.  This could be good or bad.
Virtual On- hard, beautiful, and fun.

and there\'s more but those are the ones I\'ve played.

Coming soon...

Metropolis Street Racer- played the demo recently and must say it\'s at the top of my must have list.  Amazing!

OutTrigger- looks to rival goldeneye for deathmatches.  Played the demo and it\'s gorgeous and loads of fun.

Dark Angel- looks to dethrone laura in the adventure section.

Sonic 2- if you\'ve played the first, you know why this is a must have.

Farnation- massive multiplayer RPG.  THink everquest on DC.

Illbleed- Reinventing the horror genre, looks freaky and demented.

Fighting Vipers 2- underrated but a good fighting game.

Ecco 2- if it\'s like the first, I\'ll love it.

Daytona 2001: Network racing- need I say more.

Soul Reaver 2- good stuff!

more, more, and, more.

For 150 bucks, the DC is a steal.  Just get it and don\'t look back.

I would like to get a DC just for that game.  But nothing else really catches my eye, well Shenmue too.

My brother-in-law is getting a DC for X-mas, so I will be able to play them all then..

peace :burn:

Because u like RPG´s and Fighting I will post my top 3 DC games for this 2 categories:
RPG´s
- Skies of Arcadia, some people says that is the best game on DC, even better than Shenmue. I also think so.
- Grandia 2, also a great RPG, I also like it better than Shenmue.
- Shenmue, This game is great!! Is different, It´s amazing but is not the best game on DC.

Fighting:
- Soul Caliber, also have it since 9.9.99 and wow!!! I love this game, I already have my Ps2 and TTT and this game can easily compete witj it. I love it, this game alone worth the $150 the DC is.
- Powerstone 2, I love the moving scenarios, I love that you can grab anything and use it.
- Marvel vs Capcom, If you have played this one 2 death in the arcade, you will die again playing it on the DC, Great game!

If u have the money 2 buy both systems. What the F*** r u waiting for? Go for it!! Don´t think it twice;):):D

Wow I wasn\'t expecting so many responses.  Ok..someone earlier said what does the ps2 have that is buy me right now..first off..I never said there was anything on the ps2 that is a must buy for me.  The thing is..there is just something about future ps2 games that look very promising..one reason why I\'m waiting.

Who was it from Aus that said "Is it really that hard to find a ps2 in your area"..the answer is YES..I live in the bay area..maybe I\'m not trying hard enough..but I just can\'t find the damm thing

The sad thing..I was looking over the list of games most of you included..and the only ones that look appealing are jet grind, shenmue, soul caliber and Sonic.

If I was a capcom fantatic..like how I used to be..I think namco changed me..I wouldn\'t hesitate to buy a DC..but the thing is..I\'m tired of street fighter and those vs games.  Dead or Alive 2 seems good..I played the ps2 version..but it has no depth whatsoever..I got bored of it really fast..I wouldn\'t even bother renting that if I had a ps2.

I\'m not a racer fan..crazy taxi was fun..but thats another game that I got bored of quickly..unfortunatly.  Damm I\'m starting to wonder if there is something wrong with me..I just cant get myself attactched to these DC games.

Skies on the other hand seems interesting..I\'ll pass on grandia..I didn\'t even like the first one..I don\'t care what anyone says..I just didn\'t like it.

Maybe I\'ll just stick with my 64 and psx..shoot right now I\'m busy playing FF9..though I\'m already on the fourth disk :(.

I know what you mean..I just can\'t find anything that catches my eye.  I dont know..maybe I\'m just fooling myself..If I really wanted a DC I probably would of bought one a long time ago...hmm..maybe I\'m just trying to fill in that void of emptiness I\'m feeling from being ps2less :(

Out of those fighting games you listed..the only ones I think that are worth my time is soul caliber and MvC2.  Second..you belive vitura fighter is the best fighter..but I prefer tekken..sorry :(

And for those rpg\'s..shenmue and skies are the only ones I\'m interested.

I dont see how me not owning a DC would make me any less of an rpg or fighting fan ^_^.

But I might take up your last statement..about getting a DC now..and in 4 months get a ps2..that might be the way to go ^_^

I won\'t participate in this thread, sorry. Let me tell you the reason, Lynx.

Listen your own opinions! Don\'t listen what others say. It\'s still eventually your decision. Well, people are lending towards DC here; buy it if you like. But PS2 is also a good console ( very good games coming to it ).

But you need help. I understand. deciding is always hard.

Search the answers. .Net is full of them.

I can\'t answer you. I don\'t know your taste :)

just go buy a dc and play games now, then itll give you a reason to wait till the release of all three next gen systems and choose which youd like to buy next, not only that, ps2\'s library should be larger by then.

but for now, dc has a pretty good library.

funny how you say the dc has nothing really that stand out to you, like ps2 has any games that stand out right now regarding fighting and rpgs eh?

Fighting and rpgs are my favorite type of games..but thats not ALL I play.  And I dont recall saying anything special about the ps2..only that its future games look promising

Anyways..jodya made a good point..its my choice..always has been always will be..the only reason why I even created this thread was to get feedback on other peoples view.  I shouldn\'t make choices from what people say though..I should make a choice because I feel like that will suit me the best..and if its a bad choice..I should face the consequences myself.  You truly are worthy of that yoda avatar jodya ::Bows:: ^_^.  I guess this is the end to my wonderfull thread :(

Somehow I think Lynx had no intention of getting a DC in the first place.  Why recommend DC games, only to give him the opportunity to refute your list saying: "I only like X amonut of games out of that entire list" or "Out of that entire list, only X amount of games intrest me."

This was a flamebait post from the start.  Only an attempt for him to convince himself, or protest to others, he isn\'t intrested in the system or its software.

It doesn\'t take convincing in order to get a Dreamcast.  Either you will get one or you won\'t.  Anyone who posts at a gaming fourm should be knowledgable enough to know if an established platform has adequate software .

Maybe the overall benevolence from the reponses in this thread means "selling" was a possbility, and that one could believe there are some DC good games.  Personally, I think it was a waste of time.

Yeah it was :(..thats why this thread is going to die out soon *Sniff*  Its amazing that you thought this whole thread was nothing but flamebait.that was never my intention :(.  And your right..you either get one or you dont ^_^.

I did have intentions of buying a DC..I think its wrong of you to think other wise..unless your psychic..are you?  Oh well..you shouldn\'t be so defensive..I\'m just an insecure person that was looking for a little guidence in choosing a system..thats all ^_^.

Post by: on December 16, 2000, 05:13:04 AM
You\'re right about the flamebait lol.

No seriously, how can you have an interest in fighting games and not own a DC?  Its rediculous, just like this thread.

Its obvious that you are only interested in \'big name titles\', the type which scream buy me, ie Shenmue.

If you haven\'t seen ads for these games, you aren\'t going to be interested, because you\'re that type of \'gamer\'.

Its like trying to sell art to a blind man who enjoys the smell of peanuts, and then being surprised when he goes and buys some elephant crap instead of the Picassos.

Quite simply, you\'ve never played most of those games, so all you have to go by are reviews and recommendations, which most DC games have in spades.

But if you only like big name crap, the PS2 SHOULD be your console of choice.  I mean why have Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur, when Tekken has twice the brand recognition!!?

I see nothing wrong in that, Lynx. Only that this thread hasn\'t helped you move out from the start, has it?

Don\'t be so sad ( or that\'s what you sound like.. really depressed ).

So I stick to my "opinion": base your decision upon your own opinions. Wich console feels better. It\'s about a system that personally entertains you, Lynx. Buy the one that entertains you the most.

Should I say: "Listen to your heart"?

Nah, it\'d be too romantic :) ( but you get the point ;) )

Trickstyle? I got it at launch. Its a good game.

Umm Lynx, I gotta tell you buddy,

This is a PS2 board, most of the people in this thread are recommending you to get a DC, then later get a PS2. Doesn\'t that tell you something?

:D

Trust me man!

And I respect your opinion about Tekken. But IMO :) Tekken is childs play, asi have outlined in an earlier post... Once you get into Virtua Fighter 3tb, you never get out.

I have been playing it non-stop for about 4 days now and the game is 4 years old!!!

I love VF3tb, and feel it is the best 3D fighter available.  Just opinion.  Second best is Tekken (fantastic style, character design); I couldn\'t get into Soul Calibur/DOA2.  Too fast.  I was playin\' VF3tb  this morning with Wolf.  Fake the kick to the head, they block, and then I do a catch grab followed by a nifty belly to belly suplex.  Ouch.  They roll back, and as they charge, I run and clothesline them - or catch \'em with a frankensteiner.  Follow it up with an elbow.   My favorite move: grabbin\' em with the Giant Swing and throwin them out of the arena (heh heh - especially launching Sarah onto the Subway tracks - or tossing Jeffry off of the beach into the ocean).

Lynx, or whoever started this: always try other games and genres.  ALWAYS.  I\'ve limited myself up until last year.  Panzer Saga/Vagrant Story made me love RPGs - which I previously avoided like the plague.  Marvel vs Capcom 2 made me enjoy 2D fighters.  Gunbird 2 and Cannon Spike gave me a taste of old school vert shooters, and I even hunted down a rare one on eBay (Strikers 2).  Looking forward to Metal Slug.  The list goes on and on.  Don\'t pass over a game because of the brand or unrecognizable title.  You don\'t know what you may be missing.  You just might like VF3tb, I think it\'s a huge improvement over VF2.  It\'s fun to sucker your opponent only to hit an impressive looking throw.  VF3tb isn\'t about speed or reaction time or combo memorization - it\'s about baiting your opponent.

I hated skateboarding games, until I rented Tony Hawk for N64 (based off of good reviews).  Result?  I\'m now a diehard Tony Hawk fan, and I would go so far to say that it is the best game on the DC.  My 2 year old son even amassed 1432 points in one combo.  I don\'t know how - I think it was a no comply followed by a grind.  Pretty impressive; he even does manuals :).

SyxxKorn, but you KNEW what you wanted, this guy is still questioning what he wants. :)

Ktulu, I could smash you with my Kage. I would make you my woman and you would like it, I start off with cartwheel back, if that misses them, I will go to the sweep on the ground, than do a flip and punch them in the face 3 times.you would get back up and I do a ppp + -> -> PK, fly at you and do a face stomp thing. You get up and I fly on my back and kick you up into the air I do a flip and catch in the air and pin you, winning the match :)

At least, that is what I would like to do half the time :)

Is it really that hard to belive that I prefer tekken over those other two games...its not brand recongnition..I really do prefer that game over those two.

Ok ok enough of this..people are getting mixed signals and confused.  I mean flamebait?..I never wanted this thread to become that, though it probably has :(.  Am I really depressed..no..I\'m actually having fun posting in this board ^_^..so dont worry about me :).  Also..who are we to judge each other ^_^.  We all are the same..we all post in this board because of our love for videogames..what difference does it make if someone likes sony or if someone loves sega..we work and spend our money for the same reason..to buy videogames ^_^.  Well not all of our money.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions.  If you wish to get a DC first, and wait for the PS2 demands to calm down, then I believe you are doing the right thing.  Why drive yourself crazy?  Think about it, if you really wanted PS2, you would have reserved it way before launch wouldn\'t you?  Now look, if you really want an X-Box or GameCube, I suggest you find out when reserves are available.
