The fifth generation of wireless technology, or 5G, holds the promise of blazing fast mobile Internet speeds that would make it possible to download a blockbuster movie in seconds. The technology is still in the developmental stage but England’s University of Surrey is working with tech companies to build the world’s first 5G network by 2018.
Although many challenges exist—not the least of which is setting global standards, a process that will likely push widespread adoption of 5G networks into the next decade—this next-generation wireless technology holds great promise. Noting that 5G trials are already underway, a recent report in The New York Times outlined a few benefits:
Downloading movies in seconds
Most mobile networks are already pretty fast, often reaching download speeds of more than 15 megabits per second. That lets smartphone users stream songs from Spotify, watch videos on YouTube or quickly check Facebook messages. Under plans for 5G, carriers will most likely offer mobile Internet speeds of more than 10 gigabits per second, or roughly 100 times faster than current networks (and significantly quicker than existing broadband). That would allow you to download high-definition movies almost instantaneously, even if you’re on the go.
According to global tech and telecom companies that are spending billions of dollars, combined, on the new wireless technology:
With 5G, downloading feature-length movies could take less than five seconds.
With 4G, downloading feature-length movies could take as long as eight minutes.
Such technology will not come cheap. Carriers and telecom equipment makers will have to install new hardware like cellphone towers in rural areas and tiny mobile hot spots in dense urban areas to reach the 10 gigabits per second target. They will also have to increasingly rely on sophisticated software to manage the expected exponential jump in mobile data traffic. So just as most people’s cellphone bills have risen as they watch more videos and access other entertainment on their mobile devices, expect operators to charge a hefty premium for these new ultrafast services.
Networks that connect millions of new devices
5G is not just about speed. Companies are also preparing for millions of new wireless devices — such as smartwatches and other wearable items, as well as sensors embedded in industrial products — to be connected to the next generation of cellphone networks.
These devices will not use a lot of data (a sensor built into a highway, for instance, will need to send only small amounts of digital information across the network every couple of hours). But when combined, these hundreds of millions — potentially billions — of new sensors will require almost universal connectivity, or the ability to go online no matter where they are, forcing operators to extend their networks to practically every corner of a country...
Driverless cars with extremely fast response times
If 5G can offer ultrafast mobile Internet speeds, then why should you care about how quickly one device can communicate with another? In short, you shouldn’t. And as current mobile networks offer so-called latency, or digital response times, of around 50 to 80 milliseconds (the time it takes for a web page to load on your smartphone), reducing that speed to a mere millisecond — the goal under most companies’ 5G plans — might not add much to users’ mobile experiences.
Yet that extremely fast response time will be essential for many of the new services that will most likely be offered on 5G networks. A prime example is driverless cars. These machines will have to communicate almost in real time with everything around them to avoid cyclists and other obstacles. That can happen only if carriers offer one-millisecond latency, something that may become a lifesaver if autonomous cars become a reality...

5G speed can download or downstream data up to 10 Gbps and in 1 ms latency. Very impressive.
i wasn't really sure what latency is but its said digital response time, so i understand it somewhat better.

Cool, but with bandwidth capping it is not an option for me.
I have 100/100 via Fiber, so I am happy with that. Able to get 1000/100 but not worth the price at the moment.

Damn. Think of how fast you can download porn with 1000/100 ;)

Who downloads porn these days? Back when the internet was slow....yeah, I can see why. But it's so fast these days that there's no need to store it. Unless it's a sex tape of titan and paul
-
the benefit of storing porn is that people can re-watch it again without streaming it to a specific part and people like to collect porn. i bet you collect a lot of porn in your computer/laptop's hdd. i know i do. *me runs and hides*.

Stream. Whatever. I for one embrace the streaming of porn. I haven't downloaded a video in years. But with PornHub, if you like a video, you can download it for later wankings. Also, sometimes I get bogged down in the streams and it has to buffer. With these speeds, I can stream 4K porn and not have to worry about the buffering issues. Though to be honest, I'm not sure I'm ready for 4K porn. I don't need to be jerking it to some chick blowing a guy, she takes off her panties, then suddenly see the skank's herpe riddled twat.

Dude....that just gave me the most raging blackest boner ever.

show pic that you have the blackest boner to prove it. just kidding. :p

But if I got paid....could I still post it? :)

My dear Paul. The rules are no joking matter! They exist to create order and balance within our forum. Without the rules things will be pure anarchy. The amount of dick picks floating around here would be astronomical! Think of the poor innocent children that come and visit us on the forum! Everyone deserves a safe place to come and post without the fear of ridicule. After all, are we not all human with the same basic needs and wants? I am reminded of the time as a young lad when I stole a cookie from the cookie jar. I got caught, my parents got a divorce and my brother developed a drug problem. All because I wanted a cookie. It wasn't even a good cookie. It was oatmeal raisin. Who puts raisins in a cookie? If I needed help taking a shit I would have eaten a box of raisins myself. My point is, if porn is posted here, baby Jesus cries.

are you joking again?

are you joking again?
*sigh* What do you think?
-
yeah. sorry, i am kind of dumb. couldn't really tell you were joking.
speaking about cookie, i remember late last year i took cookies in a cookie jar and eat it when i lived in a board and care. but i wasn't stealing it, it was left over. after the manager passed out cookies for us to eat a couple days or so prior, she put the leftover cookies in a cookie jar.
so some nights later, i feel like eating it, so i opened up the jar and took some cookies and ate it. because of my social anxiety disorder, i didn't feel like asking her or the next night, tell her friend when her friend came out of the restroom when i ate the left over cookies again. but i didn't steal it, it was left over. i know the manager will say yes if i asked her. i think that is her intention to put the left over cookies in the jar so we can eat it anytime we want. otherwise, the left over cookies will get expired if it were left uneaten for days and weeks.
usually, my social anxiety disorder prevents me from explaining myself to other which could create a misunderstanding.

You are a legend, Paul.
-
what do you mean by that? is that a good thing or a bad thing?
-
Definitely a good thing.
YOU are the heart of this forum now.

wow. that is a bold statement. not sure if i can live up to that statement. thanks man. appreciate your kind words. B)
