Title: Thanks to Sony I own a DVD player...
Post by: w1ngman on December 16, 2000, 07:48:07 PM
Okay.  I personally have enjoyed a number of the initial games that released with the PS2 in the States.  But thanks to Sony\'s limited forethought in planning enough PS2s for Oct 26th release (or perhaps their deliberate desire to hold back in order to increase demand...but let\'s save that for another well-trodded thread), what I now seem to own is basically a DVD player.

Yeah, I love SSX.  And yes, I have little to complain about with Madden 2001.  Personally, for me (cuz I know a lot of posters have bashed it), I enjoy Nascar 2001.  But let\'s face it, the software publishers are plain scared to invest in putting their company\'s titles on the store shelves until more PS2 units have sold.

So what does a PS2 owner get to do in the meantime.  I mean, once you\'ve played your couple of really good games to death,...once you\'ve been to EB, Best Buy, TRU, Babbages, and the like pretty much every day hoping for a fresh and worthy new release,...once you realize nobody\'s putting anything out their worth a **** for at least another 2 months!!!,...well,...then you realize Sony just sold you a DVD player and you visit the New Release DVD wall of your local Blockbuster...that\'s what you do.

Yep.  Thanks Sony for my sexy black DVD player.  I\'ll talk nice about you when you distribute enough PS2s to strengthen the publishers\' faith in you.

PS. For all those folks that don\'t yet own a PS2, forgive me for my self-indulgent rant.  Yes, I am grateful for my PS2 and I enjoy the games that I have...but Sony really has let us *ALL* down in how they\'ve handled their PS2.

is that not enough now?

w1ngman...cool to hear that you enjoy your PS2\'s DVD Player (i think its sexy also) Function, but you can\'t forget about all the recent PSOne Games. I mean FF9, Spyro 3, Lunar 2, etc. etc.... :)

MattPS2k -- you are absolutely right regarding some excellent PSOne games on the shelves right now.  No doubt about it...but I already had a PSX and coulda played those tasty titles anytime.  I sunk some $$$ into PS2 to play next-gen games.  Anyway, what I realize I really have to face is that I\'m having "title withdrawls" due to nothing less than the PSX\'s huge library of titles.  To those that might otherwise tear into me, I realize that the PS2 is new and its library has just begun.

So I\'m a pig...and I want more games...its just that simple.  But yes, there are some good PSOne games to enjoy.  And as another positive, I get to appreciate the PS2\'s graphics "smoothing" feature for many of these latest PSOne titles!  Okay, I\'m not *too* mad at Sony perhaps.

On the PSOne titles (b/c I like racing games), I\'m also pissed with my local Blockbusters b/c they don\'t yet have Jarrett & Labonte Racing in the house.  I\'ve always enjoyed Codemasters titles, and I\'m anxious to try this one out as well.  Sure, it ain\'t gonna be oval-track stock car racing...but that\'s what makes the TOCA titles soo fun...as well as the terrific AI in the comp drivers.

Unfortunatly I can\'t feel what your going though..for I dont own a ps2.  But I can try to understand, and yes your right..there is a lack of high quality games for the ps2 as of late..and its not until feb of next year when some high profile games come out..I might actually be doing myself a favor by waiting, but its hard because I haven\'t had the chance to play current games to death.

I feel like that sometimes as well (I buy a lot more DVD movies than I do PS2 games; only a few of its games seem to appeal to me right now), but you have to consider that at least your PS2 will serve two other functions.  Those would be playing your DVD movies AND playing your old PSX games.

A marketing dilemma very similar to this happened back in late 1996 when Nintendo released the N64.  There were like 16 or so titles at launch, most of which, SUCKED.  To top things off, the console ended making a pretty expensive paper weight during the holidays because you couldn\'t really do anything with it besides play the lacking library of N64 titles at the time.  Not to mention launch games were ludriciously overpriced.  I remember paying $80 for Shadows of the Empire!  I eventually gave my brother my N64 after about 3 months in favor of a PSX in 1997.  As we all have seen in the past, superior graphics capabilities don\'t always dominate the market.  Good software does....

We need to give it some time; lots of great titles are just around the corner, which will put a lot more life into our beloved PS2 consoles.  Enjoy some DVDs in your room while you\'re waiting (I am) and by all means, also enjoy the great PSX titles that just got released.  FFIX is an excellent game if you haven\'t already picked it up.  Good things are still coming out of 5-year-old technology.

the N64 launched with 3 TITLES!
not 14....
the n64 launch was quite different.
Problem with the ps2 launch the number of consoles compared to the number of games out there, its something differnt happening to a console. SSX, Madden, Timespliters, Midnight Club racing is alot of good titles for a launch of a console, compared to any other console launch in history it is very good.

I agree, thanks to sony I have a wonderful DVD player.  As for your mario over any PS2 game, I beg to differ, I want to go and play lots of PS2 games but I don\'t have the oppurtunity.  I would love to play some not so popular PS2 games.

It was two here in the US. Four in Japan. Two of which was chess games of sort. That was a pretty bad launch, but still broke records. The system was constantly being delayed, 2 games. Ugh. But bright side was, there was cool promo items. My Toys\'R\'Us, if you had a pre-paid ticket, you could show it the cashier and she would give you a N64 duffle bag and Mario 64 shirt. Well, they never stamped the ticket or anything, so I just went in every other day or so and got a new one. I amassed a huge collection of duffle bags and Mario shirts. Still have them, even though I gave some away.:)

J&L is awesome, and it has an incredible damage model along with great opposition driver AI, check a review;

Can I have a duffle bag and a shirt. I love video game promotional items. Last year I picked up some 1986 Super Mario Brothers and Zelda BED SHEETS on eBay. The embarassing thing is that I USE THEM. Thank God I\'m Single!

I love me DVD -player too :)

PS2 it is, yez.

But I love the games equally.

Still I don\'t love PS2.

Still I don\'t love DVD.

What do I do?

I should use the word "like".

I can\'t love a machine.
