I have a friend that says PSX sales don\'t effect PS2 sales.
I think the psx sales DO effect the ps2 sales. That most people that have a psx will get the ps2 JUST because how well the psx did..
He says the Xbox will out sell ps2 because there American owned. I believe the ps2 will out sell the xbox.
He says that people don\'t care for BRAND names on console either.. I believe the BRANDNAME does effect console sales.
What do u guys think?

Most people get the PS2 for the DVD player! :)
EDIT: Typo.

Ask your friend if Terminator 1 affected Terminator 2 ticket sales.
Ask your friend why the PS2 is sold out and in such high demand... despite the high price tag. Particularly when the Dreamcast - which is half the cost - is readily available and has almost 200 games.
Ask your friend why the N64 sold as well as it did, despite the moronic decision to go cartridge and the slow ass release of games. I mean, after all, people could\'ve bought the PSX the first year. Yet the N64 broke sales records with only, what, 3 launch titles? SNES is why.
Ask your friend what in the hell he\'s smoking. Does the PSX affect PS2 sales? Um, DUH. Look at the top selling games for PS2. Guess what? They are sequels to top selling PSX games. What in the hell is he thinking? Microsoft fans can be so damn stupid about this stuff. Don\'t get pissed - Sony and Sega fans get stupid too. I can understand bragging about power... but claiming that people will "forget" the PSX and make an "informed buying decision" because of polygonal power of the machine and the origin of the company? What a crock of sh**. Casual gamers don\'t know what a polygon is - they just recognize names of games. This guy is insane. PSX is the ONLY reason the PS2 is doing so well. Without the PSX, Sony wouldn\'t have lured 350 developers (Microsoft is still struggling). Without the PSX, Sony wouldn\'t have had so many launch titles. Sony wouldn\'t have had so many preorders. It\'s called Playstation 2 for a reason.

Amen to this ****ing response, this is one of the best replies I have ever seen on this board. You cannot argue with what this man has just said.

Thanks... for the record, I\'m not saying PS2 doesn\'t deserve it\'s sales. It has the best launch selection I\'ve ever seen. Saturn was my personal favorite, but I\'m a huge Daytona/Virtua Fighter/Panzer fan. In the real world outside of me, the PS2\'s was the best. Madden, Tekken, Ridge Racer, Kessen, Armored Core, Timesplitters, SSX, etc. People enjoy spitting on it, but stack it up against any other launch in history, and I think it more than holds it\'s own. Not the revolution that was promised, but most definitely a fine selection of titles from day one. Particularly for a system that was extremely difficult to develop for.

But they have new developement kits out now.

can be... but i don´t believe it, a question, How many consoles has benn sale since its launch? (ps2, in all world)
-
I think near 5 million. considering the trouble they had with the parts and shortages, PS2 is doing good thanx to the japanesse support i guess.
but within the next 3 months, they are going to have a total of 10 million shipped worldwide.

That\'s alot

Of course it affects sell. There was only a small amount of the original PS at launch, because Sony didn\'t know if they could sell them all. Yet, with the PS2 they knew they could sell over 500,000 from day one. Now if it didn\'t have anything to do with the original PS, explain why they knew they could sell that many?
WHat about the people who loved the original PS? They\'ll want a PS2. Or people who hated the original PS? They probally won\'t want a PS2.
Its like a movie..Star Wars sequel\'s sell, because of the past Star Wars.

Again, I ain\'t typically too prone to stating things in a short-winded manner, but I think I can offer solid argument for [read: against] your friend\'s argument: "He says that people don\'t care for BRAND names on console either..."
[Note: This is NOT a console bash]
People don\'t care for BRAND names on their console? Ask me if I felt good when I purchased my Sega Genesis...Actually, I was very satisfied. I liked Sega. When Sega promised me unbelievable gaming enhancements with a CD-based add-on, I (and my cash) stepped up to the plate...and was disappointed (ONLY exception being SNATCHER - great game...thanks Konami!). When Sega said, "don\'t base our abilities on our past, purchase our 32X add-on and become overwhelmed with the graphics and gameplay increases you will see..." And [other than DOOM...thanks Williams!] I can\'t think of a single 32X game that didn\'t deserve to be melted down for fishing sinkers. When Sega said, "Oops, he he, sorry \'bout all that other stuff...try our Saturn" then forgot to mention that developers where basically burned out by Sega\'s mediocre console efforts... You get the idea... Okay, now Sega has Dreamcast. And frankly, that is a GREAT system. It has some great games. But,...BUT... consider that with all of this Sega history stated, do you not for a moment think that the Sega BRAND name doesn\'t mean something to me? Frankly, if I see Sega on something, I\'m going to have reservations...likely for the rest of my life. Sorry, Sega, I didn\'t do this...you did. Good luck rubbing the tarnish off of your BRAND name for me...
However, similarly, I\'ve owned countless Sony PRODUCTS. Not just the PSX. But VCRs, TVs, Walkman, Discman, Camcorder, Cordless 900mhz phone, DVD players, PDA,...PS2...and Sony stock, to name but a few things. My life experience with the Sony BRAND is that this company knows electronics. This company knows niche markets. This company knows quality. I\'ve never known Sony to compromise. And I\'ve never been dissatisfied with Sony. My experience with Sony is a personal one that I can appreciate may not be shared by others. However, this experience makes the Sony BRAND very important for my personal buying decisions.
Under the circumstances, this person *does* care for BRAND names...

I do think that a part of it, DOES have to do with brand name...for instance if there is a 27" inch TV made by sony that cost 450, and another Toshiba 27" inch for 200, I am going to buy the Sony one, despite the price diff. But anyway we are talking about systems here. I think another part is the diff. games that are released with the specific system.
-
If it wasn\'t brand name why the hell did I buy a PS2? Oh yeah, it was brand name. I loved the first PS..Well, that and I buy every console that comes out.
-
Its about the games and advertising. If I have two games one on each system and there is a verion of the game thats much much much better on another system thats the system I am going to buy and also about exclusive games, if I have a game that rocks and its not on another system along with the above then the console of choice is already chosen.
-
Ps2 doesn\'t need big advertizement, Playstation one is the ad. Success of PSX affects the PS2 sells. People know PS2 because of the PSX. They know what kind of games are coming to the new console. The name and reputation effects the market a lot.
Ask your friend why Coca-Cola sells more than the new Caco-Cola ( by a new company ), even if Caco-Cola tastes better? ( completely fictional but would be true )
Why companies do sequels?
Why, if names wouldn\'t sell, Hollywood wouldn\'t have so big stars.
Why do every Schwarzenegger -film sell even if with bad plot?
Names, Reputation etc.
-
Ps2 doesn\'t need big advertizement, Playstation one is the ad.
Man, that was the perfect way to sum up the thread.

Thanks :)
It\'s because Playstation one is still fresh even after these years.

Of course brand name matters. A brand name is basically a history of products and, in general, is an important factor when making a decision. On the other hand it is only a factor. Hardcore gamers tend to think the rest of the world are idiot cows but if that were the case we would not be talking about how important the PSX is in the PS2\'s future. Also, people do care about texture maps and polys, they just don\'t know it. They are perfectly capable of looking a screenshots and demos and then deciding what they like. In other words, brand name is useful for getting attention for your new products but it by no means ensures high sales in the long run.

Each company has released some junk. Thats just a given. It is going to happen over time. The biggest problem with Sony is their quality control or lack of it. They have none. The PS market got flooded with alot of bad , bad, VERY bad games. Hopefully, they will tighten this for the PS2.

Now, now Faceoff... Remember what I wrapped up with:

Certainly, everyone cannot have had 100% good experiences with a company. I have been exceptionally lucky perhaps with my experience with Sony products. And Living-In-Clip does bring up a good point with regards to quality control of accepting dog-poop in some 3rd party software releases (especially in its 3rd and 4th years).
And here\'s one for ya... I, too, had to purchase a 2nd PSX due to overheating. Does this go counter to my saying that "I\'ve never been dissatisfied with Sony"? No. How can I say that? B/C I had that 1st unit for 3 years with no problems and then it was played for over 12 solid hours by fraternity brothers while I was visiting my frat at VA Tech (mostly Gameday \'98 and other sports titles). I can *still* actually play the system, but I have fashioned a contraption that allows the unit to hang upside down (I joke to folks, "looks like a bat in there!"). But it still plays. Two plastic tracks for the cd lense were never meant to be against such heat for such a period of time. And when I purchased a my 2nd one, I did so knowing that that 1st one worked well for me...and that I had abused it. Did the 2nd one fail me? Not once to this day. Was the 2nd one redesigned to allow for better heat dissipation and relocation of internal components, etc.? Sure was, and I saw that as Sony\'s stepping up to the plate to keep customers satisfied. I had the 1st for 3 years. It did me (personally) fine. And Sony has continued to garner my respect.
Once again, this is just my personal experience & views. I do not expect them to be shared by others. Especially when others might have had ridiculously poor experiences with the same company. I won\'t apologize for that. I\'m happy with Sony...so far. And as long as I continue to be, I\'ll keep appreciating their products.
Thanks.

yeah i guess everybody has different experinces.hey w1ngman you mentioned something about having stock in sony........
well how did you do in it. i always thought it whould be cool to invest in some of the video game companys i\'ve always liked.think about owning a piece of capom,EA,namco.
just a thought.make some money(or lose)

Faceoff,
Your interest in Capcom, EA, etc., is some of the best reasons for investing in a company. A (not THE...but A) general rule that is good to stand by is that if *you* are satisfied with a company, its products, and/or its services, it is more than likely that others too are generally satisfied. As such, if you feel good about the company, then you should consider investing in them. Again, that is a "general" rule.
It was *that* rule that led me to invest in Sony. In a nutshell, Sony has done very well for me (so perhaps you won\'t wish to read further for boredom, but here goes...). After my appreciation for gaming on the PS1 and knowing what I\'d enjoyed in various Sony products (previously mentioned in this thread), I opted to invest in Sony. I initially purchased 5 shares (my wife and I only recently - last 2 years or so - began investing in stocks) of Sony. Until recently I have enjoyed a 300% increase in this stock\'s worth. Also, over the course of ownership, the 5 shares split 2-1 so I now have 10 shares of same. The recent downturn in the markets has put a pinch on all tech related stocks (of which Sony is considered) and has therefore turned Sony\'s down some as well. However, I have a few shares of about 15 other companies as well and they have done despicably poor, whereas Sony is still showing an overall overwhelming profit. I\'m happy I did what I did with Sony.
Do keep in mind, however. Just as one should not invest all their money in a single company or type of stocks, there is a perceptible difference between investing in Sony and investing in a software company such as Namco or EA. Whereas Sony makes LOTS of different things, and therefore they can capture profits from many different products, various software developers can often count on their 1-3 titles coming out in a year to be their make or break opportunity. If the software busts, the company has no chance. I think you know where I\'m going here, but I\'ll leave it as is for now.
Also, if your interest go this way...start investigating the companies on the Net. Learn what they do and how they make their money, etc. There are a lot of great places to investigate companies...you\'ll be all the richer for taking the time to be sure.
