Title: Am I the only one that wants 2D on PS2?
Post by: Huddy on December 19, 2000, 11:04:38 PM
granted, I know a lot of gamers on this board like the charm of 3D, however, I\'m a bit suprised that Capcom hasn\'t said anything regarding ANY 2D games for the PS2.    Granted i\'m old school when it comes to fighters, not saying that I don\'t enjoy Tekken and DoA, but I like to see some insane things happening on the screen.

One game that I would LOVE to see come to the PS2 is Guilty Gear X.  Those of you who played the Import of Guilty Gear on PSOne remember how solid the gameplay was.  Hell, Capcom couldn\'t of made a better game.  With all the proclaimed "next gen" stuff coming out, is there anyone like me that wants some of the older 2D games??

Or am I just old?? =D

I\'m with you on this, Huddy.

I would really like to see the Megaman X franchise on the PS2. :)

And I liked Guilty Gear X, but I still enjoyed the Street Fighter Alpha/Street Fighter 3 games more.

I\'ve been this boards strongest advocate of 2D PS2 games. Glad someone finally took notice and stepped up to join the "cursade".

We need massive Capcom support.
Konami needs to provide us with a 2D CastleVania.

I didn\'t know bro.  I\'m glad though that there are people like me that want to see some fighters and yes, I think Konami can do a HUGE CastleVania game on the PS2.  Think of the lighting effects, the pressure sensitive attacks with the Dual Shock 2.  **drools**

I agree. Down the the annoying music games. Give us a 2D Castlevania like Castle:SOTN for the PS. But, looks like we will be waiting quite awhile for such a thing to happen.

Capcom needs to port their games or develop some for ihe PS2 also. One reason I\'m such a DC fan is because of the massive support Capcom is putting into the system. Right now, the only 2D game out there to my knowledge is Gradius 3 & 4. Which by the way is excellent, even if it was a rip off (two 16 bit games on one disc).

I\'d like to see good old 2d-platform game on PS2.

I loved Rayman, and now Rayman 2 is in 3d ( not bad, but... ); I\'d like to see Rayman: SE on PS2 wich would be ten times larger than the PS1 version and lots harder :)

And good ol\' Capcom cartoon-fighting games would be nice too.

Or a 2d drawed adventure ( a là Curse of Monkey Island )

How about Dragon\'s Lair :)?

Seriously, nobody even mentioned 2D shooters by companies like Psikyo and Capcom.  What about those?  Gimme Strikers 194X.  PS2 is getting the next Fire Pro game (greatest 2D wrestler ever made - not arguably, just cold hard fact).

When I mention Capcom I also mean their shooters. Psikyo is an awesome developer. They done great with Cannon Spike.

Ah yes,

if there is one thing that I\'d like to see, it\'d be the return of the giant planes about 20x the size of your small fighter plane, and YOU blowing the hell out of it!

Granted i\'m a shooter fan too!  I have all the good 2D shooters on my neo-geo emu on my PC.  Gotta love\'em.

I wanna see Marvel Vs Capcom 3 PS2 Exclusive though! :D

There was some good 2D stuff, but I think we\'ve come far enough that we should always do 3D or at least give the illusion of it even if it\'s a sidescroller or top-down game.

I think 2D may quickly become a thing of the past.  What was the last good 2D game that came out, other than an RPG?

2d street fighter :)

If it would look just like a cartoon, it would be cool!

Who thinks a good old Lemmings -compilation pack ( with all the known lemmings -games including the Revolution ) would be nice?

Lemmings is the best puzzle game I\'ve played so far.

It has been my fav. since I was 6.

Sports, Racing:  3D is necessary.  End of story.

Fighting games:  They\'re still 2D, but with a 3D appearance.  3D gives them nice, smooth, fluid and realistic looking animations.  But even with the sidestep, they are still 2D.  The 3D fighters: Ehrgeiz, Powerstone.  The problem with 3D fighters: the additional dimension ruins control schemes and move depth.  True 3D fighters suck because you are incredibly limited.  That third dimension completely screws up all commands that say "towards + X" or "away + Y".  It also disorients the gamer.  But 3D appearance is nice for smooth animations.

Platform games:  Again, 2D is better IMO.  That third dimension leaves way too much open space for game designers.  When the gamer is limited to left and right, game design is much simpler and much more robust.  There\'s no limit (believe it or not).  3D forces designers to fill space.  3D is great for adventure games which are, by nature, exploratory.  But not platform games.  There have been some exceptions (Mario 64, Rayman 2), but overall, the platform genre gave us more quality titles back when it was 2D.  The best platformer on the PSX is 2D (Castlevania SOTN).

Shooters:  Again, 2D reigns supreme.  The best 3D shooters?  First Person.  But, like the platform genre, the shooter genre offered us more quality when it was 2D.  Vertical shooters have become a thing of the past.  When a gamer is limited to 2 dimensions, it\'s easier for designers to make things difficult for him.  Give him 3 dimensions, and the slippery bastid is a bitch to track down.  Panzer Dragoon, one of the finest 3D shooters, is on a rail.  Another great shooters: Einhander (actually 2D).  One I really enjoyed on the PSX was Apocalypse.

I agree, it would be nice to get some old style 2D gameplay with 3D visuals.  But I also love the handdrawn look.  Polygons and textures can\'t offer the same detail as a handdrawn character.  Wrinkling clothes, blowing hair, grimacing faces, gorgeous backdrops.  2D should live on forever; as it does in our other areas of entertainment.  Heavy Metal 2000, Iron Giant, Titan AE, Simpsons, etc etc.  There are certain forms of gameplay where 2D is clearly superior to 3D... and vice versa.  But there will always, always, always be a need for beautiful handdrawn characters.  Is 2D better?  In some genres.  Is Handdrawn better?  Always.  It\'s imagination and talent unbounded by polygon counts; and games are all about imagination.

Amen, give us some 2D Capcom games.

I started a thread that questioned this very possibility.

MY concern was that PS2 wouldn\'t be able to do the type of 2D\'s that the DC could do due to the lack of RAM.

This was quickly put down, but the question persisted of whether or not SONY would be willing to let Capcom do it.

We know all about Sony\'s unwillingness to allow developers to actually do 2D games on the PS1, UNLESS it was something like MegaMan or Castlevania, ie; big name 2D\'s. (not that it would be capable of doing anything else, look at X-Men CotA, or MSH.  Do I even need to go further in regards to Capcom fighters?)

It\'s all in Sony\'s hands now, I think.  Capcom knows there is a market there in PS2.

Next challenge:  Stating this fact on the Capcom message board.  Most people there seem to have one solution: Get a Dreamcast.  Easy to do when you are playing with Mommy and Daddy\'s money!  This ain\'t such a hot idea on MY budget.  Not with a daughter on the way! :D

What I would like to do to MOST Capcom message boarders:  :burn:

I agree. I want to see some new versions of the old 2D series like MegaMan, Ghost\'n Goblins, Final Fight, Sonic, Street Fighter, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and i\'d kill for a new Castlevania game in 2D. But, i want new games also.
With the amazing 2D capabilities of the actual systems, developers like Konami, Capcom, Treasure or Irem could make wonderful things.

Huh, i\'m trying to imagine how could be a new Castlevania if they push the PS2 to it\'s limits, with high resolution sprites, hand-drawed gothic backgrounds( with smooth scrolling), lots of transparencies and a dolby digital soundtrack. Add to this the Castlevania\'s gameplay and you gonna see a big smile in my face :D.

Well, I love old school 2D Rpg\'s. Namco has "Seven" coming for PS2, and I believe and hope that more high quality 2D Rpg\'s come our way!!

Take a look.

When you think about it though here the other possiblity:

Fighting Games:  Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Marvel Superheros etc etc have ALL been 2D.  I think Capcom screwed themselves when they released the EX series.  If you think about it, how often has the story lines of all the games worked/played themselves out?  Granted, I loved Alpha3, but still, it kinda got annoying.

I think we need to see Capcom re-invent its roots and then get things back on track.  Hell, I wouldn\'t mind seeing a game like "The Street Fighter" and have it feature all the guys from the orginal SF2 and have a more comprehensive story line.

2D/3D Fighting Games:  Most of you guys are right.  If you look @ Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Capcom put in a BUTT load of 3D eye candy, however, the characters get pixy (pixelated) on the screen and end up looking bad.  Why can\'t they have the characters look good?  I\'m with some of the other guys, make it like we\'re playing a Saturday morning cartoon and I\'ll pay money for it.  Street Fighter 3 was evidence that its possible to do that.

New Ideas for 2D:  I\'ve started a "game" per-say in my head that invloves some 3D aspects such as fighting in huge arenas such as starting out in front of a kiwk mart and throwing your opponent down an alley, and start fighting down the alley and even popping out of the alley and into a street and causing the traffic to stop, and have the people driving get out yell and cheer the fighters on.  Also, real time damage... if your arm gets bruised up bad, then you can\'t use it.  Or if you perform a "break-arm" manuever, you can\'t use that limb again for a certain period of time.  (Time as in time based... your characters arm might not heal for 2 or 3 weeks!!!)  Now while this adds a realism spin to the genre it also takes some ideas and boosts them to the next plateau.

Also the addition of using surrounding enviroments to your advantage.  Boxes, pipes, kicking water up into your opponents eyes... whatever.

This is what I WANT to see 2D go.  It\'s my vision.  Now only if I could get a job @ Capcom and tell them this... :D
