Today I decided to do a little research about the casual gamer. The casual gamer is someone who really isn\'t into polygons, mhz, how powerful the system maybe, they are just worried about the games, and the "BRAND".
I asked my two brothers to come sit down with me for a few minutes while I asked them some questions. I told them what the X-Box was. After telling all about the system, all they could say was "HUH". They didn\'t understand nothing I said about the system. The polygon count, the MHZ it had, the graphics, nothing. They just said "huh", and so what.
I asked them why they wanted a PS2. They said because it had the same controllers, you could play your old games, and use some of your old software, and the PSone games were tight. So, this was the reason why PS2 will be sucessful because of the name "PS". It isn\'t the graphics, speed, polygons, it\'s the games they want.
I did a little more research as well......
My cousin and I went to Wal-Mart today, and I took him to the gaming section were they had an X-Box sign and PS2 sign standing. I asked him which one would he buy, he said the PS2 of course, I asked him why. He said because it\'s the Playstation, and Playstation has the games. I told him to look at the specs, he told me "So what". So I came to another conclusion that casual gamers don\'t give a damn about stupid specs, they are only worried about the name brand of the system. After we left some women took the sign down and put it in the trash.(X-Box sign)
Same thing I did with a N64 fan as well, they chose Gamecube over the X-Box. For the same reason as well.....
MS has alot of work to do, and the only way they can win, is when the PS2 makes a mistake. That\'s not going to happen at all. Sony cannot follow the path Nintendo made when they launch, because if they do MS has a chance of winnning.
E3 does not signal a win for a company.

Yeah that\'s the reason I wanted mY PSX2 I knew I could Play my old games in it and DVDs and you know Sony made the first PSX last about 5 years with tons of game and look at N64 only a handful of games half of which suck.

lol
\'The lady took down the Xbox sign and put it in the trash\'
Yeaaah, I believe that. From one dude saying they\'re gonna buy a PS2, they\'re going to throw the Xbox stuff in the trash. lol
Way to write off the Gamecube as well. ;)

Yeah, true. Not like the Super NES had tons of games or anything...
Fool, the Super NES had more games than even the Playstation but did that automatically guarantee the success of the N64? If half of the N64 games suck, about 85% of the PSX\'s huge line-up also sucks.
No double standards here matey.

Yeah but then why did Psx come out on top? almost all Game companie made games for the PSX and alot didn\'t for N64 also on another note I have SNES and it\'s in my room right now last time I played it was yesterday(Chrono Trigger rules!)

I didn\'t say anything about who finished on top, I just said that just because Sony \'won\' this gen, it doesn\'t guarantee victory in the next.
If that was so, Atari would still be market leader.

Bill Gates is a jacksass does he really think that a 500 million dollar campaign will really when him the gamin business, first he has to establish a good name with the gamers, like Sony did. Which brings me to this, the reason Sony is number one gaming company was because of Nintendo, Sony should thank those good people for making the biggest mistake of there life, and Sony capitalize on this too, and stole the spotlight. Gates will do it to, if given the chance.
Sony u guys are lucky.

It was very strange too, most of the people at the station were crowding around the PS2 sign.

Interesting. But you have to take in account some things..
First off, these systems you offered to compare, are not really in the "casual gamers" view yet. There is no huge marketing hype behind them yet. Not to mention, the big games haven\'t been announced. That could change alot of minds. And if MS does a huge marketing hype or even if Nintendo does, it could get some attenion.

Sony knows that.......That\'s why they are relaunching the pS2 in March 2001 to keep it very very muy muy fresh.

Very true. Sony needs to do a few things now..
Don\'t keep bringing up the HD. Just focus on the current games.
Relaunch the system with killer games.
Keep hyping the machine, therefor taking away from the other systems hype.
Basically, establish the \'current PS2\' without any of the add-ons as the most viable and entertaining console.
If they do that, they could very well take the hype away from MS and Nintendo...Tho, Nintendo will be harder to take away from, because Nintendo already has its core fanbase, where as MS doesn\'t.

I still don\'t understand why some PSX owners get all excited about the PS2\'s ability to play their old games. Anyway, I think the number one reason why casual gamers want the PS2 is because it is a DVD player.

You wouldn\'t understand, unless you are one. That\'s why Sony is concentrating on them and not YOU, because you guys think different.

Number one reason the PS2 is popular? Well, the biggest is because of the brand name "SONY" or "Playstation" !
It isn\'t because of being able to play PSone games or watch DVD movies. Most people who will buy a PS2 already own a PSone. And DVDs are cheaper in the US, then the PS2 is. Those are just extras. Instead, people buy it because the PSone was a great system. People trust the PS2 will be another great system.
In my opinion this is one reason they just added a 2 to the PS logo. That way people would walk in a store and go "Whoa, PS2?..I got to have that!". Instead of looking at it confused wondering what it is.
Its all brand name...PSone ruled, so people expect the PS2 to rule also.
By the way: Love your posts The GaMe. They are always interesting.

That\'s the reason they added the "2", so that people would just run to get the system. That\'s why people will surround there poster more because of the sucess of the PSone, which was the best console I have ever seen.

this is going to be a blunt post
I have had a PSOne for five years and I could always go to the Video Store and get a game that was good and fun to play, even though the N64 (which I also own) had better graphics I still didn\'t rent for it because "I" didn\'t like any of the games for it, when I found out that PS2 was coming out I knew that I could trust Sony not to sell me this product and then dump it down the drain like Penasonic did with the 3DO, so in turn I saved my pennies and bought a PS2 with no worry\'s about loosing my money, and for this reason alone "I" think PS2 will be on top for the next gen consoles, because they have the trust of millions of people unlike MS ever had and more then what Nintendo currently has.
"mind you that this is all my oppinion and I could be wrong about every single thing I have said"

I had to answer this. First of all, the Playstation took over 18 months to sell one million units. New kid on the block. Sega had already shot themselves in the foot, but most folks were waiting for the follow up to the SNES. Guess what. The N64 shattered sales records DESPITE having only 2 or 3 games. Sony picked up speed over the next year because the N64 was cartridge based. Meaning: LONG waits for games, PISSED off developers, and EXPENSIVE cartridges. Add a price drop, and the PSX phenom was born.
How does this compare to Microsoft? Well, if PSX = SNES, then N64 must be PS2. NOPE. N64 was a year AFTER it\'s "new blood" competition. This time, the "new blood" (Microsoft) is a year later. What if Sony had given Nintendo a headstart last gen? Hmmm? Better yet, what if Nintendo had gone CD? Hmmm? You see my point. Ain\'t no damn way in HELL Microsoft will pull a PSX. No way. Because the competition EXISTS this time - and worse yet, Microsoft is giving it a headstart. Anybody could win.

I had a theory once, that the PS2 was going to end up like the N64, because the N64 pissed off developers because of catridges and sh*t like that. After hearing that the PS2 was going to be hard to develope for, I thought to myself, Oh **** the PS2 will end up like the N64, but on December_, 2000, Sony shocked the world when they announced that they will be sending new development kits to all developers, to make it truly easy to developer for.
Sony will not make any mistakes, nor will Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft, the race is too close to call......
Wonder how Oddworld feels.
