Title: Has anyone else\'s PS2 seem to die after about a month?
Post by: on December 27, 2000, 05:14:19 AM
God.........I\'m so aggravated right now.  I\'ve invested over $700 on this console along with games and accesories and now it wants to stop reading discs, whether it\'s PS2/PSX format software, DVD movies, CDs, etc.  I pop a disc in and I\'ll either get a "disc read error" or the screen will stay blank during a game bootup.  And the worst part is, it happens at random times!  Sometimes it\'ll cooperate and read something while other times it just simply refuses to do anything.

Sending the stupid thing to Sony will just leave me a month without a console that I play every day.....that\'s not good enough.  Seriously, the QC really needs to get better on these damn things.  My friend got a DOA PS2 that took a month to get replaced and now I think mine is toast.  I\'m pretty sure it has something to do with the CD/DVD drive mechanism because it will sound like the disc is spinning for a few seconds and then it\'ll click a few times and stop.

I never had problems with it until a couple of days ago (Christmas) when I had to fight with the stupid machine to get it to boot SSX.  Gosh, this reminds me of the old NES days where you had to BLOW on the cartridge contacts to make the silly things work right.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR............

It happened a few times, I proped it up vertically, and it worked again. But thats still bull ****. I should be able to play **** flawlessly while it\'s horizontal.

well if you don\'t send it back in the first three months you have nothing to complain about since it\'s your own fault for not getting it fixed.

You\'d also think on a console this expensive that they\'d at least give a 1-year warranty.  90 days is subpar, especially for a Sony product.  What if crap like this happened after the 90th day?  WOW........I guess you\'ll have to go looking for a rare PS2 AGAIN and shelling out $300 AGAIN.  Unless of course you can find an authorized tech who can repair them.

I agree 1 year would be nice...

I think their thought is that if something is wrong with the PS2, it will show up right away.  You have to realize this is a system many kids play and can drop, etc...  over the course of a year.  If Sony feels that any problems due to production will pop up in the first 3 months then well that\'s why they would want to do that.

I don\'t know how it works in the US, but here in Denmark there is automatically a 1-year warranty on EVERYTHING you buy. Including PS2 of course. :)

I haven\'t had any problems what-so-ever with my PS2 though.

Deadly Hamster, I love your signature.

90 days, to me, says, "We aren\'t sure enough in our product\'s design to support it past that".  They should give the option to purchase longer warranties.

i have a one year warranty on my PAL ps2 but it\'s not the same as my friends imported ps2, there is no pcmcia card slot, instead, there is an "Expansion bay" (supposedly for the future "hard disk"). Now it\'s too late anyway because i bought ADSL and a special compatible keyboard and mouse from Alienware computers.

I think you console has a hedgehog in it. A blue hedgehog. Kill it when you find it. Hate that thing. And when you squish it, it\'ll squeel "SEGA"! Kinda cool.

The PS2 is not the only Sony product with a 90 day warranty. I had a dss system that had the same time frame. I do not know what the problems is I got my PS2 on 11/14/2000 my DC on 09/09/1999 my N64 in 96 and my PS on 09/09/1995. All of these still work fine. I use my PS2 for games and my DVD changer for movies. However I did use the PS2 to watch the Sopranos this weekend out of town and it worked fine. I do agree with video you have nothing to complain about if you don\'t send it back now.

Similar thing happened to me too. One day things were going fine then all of a sudden it wouldn\'t read discs.... I sent it to a Authorized Sony repair center in Canada and got it back in 2 weeks. It works great now. I think you should take it to get fixed cause it would suck having a PS2 that doesn\'t play games half the time. Besides its a slow time for games right now anyways. I still play it sevral times a day tho. :)

I guess I\'ll just have to send mine in pretty soon here then.  I do have a 2-year replacement plan on it from Best Buy (I got suckered into buying it because I work there), but the thing is they\'ll probably not even have a unit laying around to replace mine with.  Oh well.....

Post by: on December 28, 2000, 12:10:55 AM
I\'ve been running this thing vertically since the day I bought it (Nov. 8th I\'m pretty sure).  The really weird part about this whole mess is that the machine will play DVD movies flawlessly every time but is still finicky with PS2 software....  PSX games won\'t even boot at all anymore (even with the smooth texturing and fast disc speed OFF) and I\'m getting frustrated because my original PSX is broken (thanks to my brother).  I really want to play FFIX (I\'m almost done with the game, damnit!).

I\'m really starting to think that my brothers screwed up my PS2 because it seems like every time I leave them alone with my stuff something gets f\'ed up.  Let\'s see.....I\'ve been through 3 computer keyboards in this year ALONE (building a reasonably fast computer wasn\'t good enough for them......they continue to mess with mine when I\'m gone).  I make a effort to keep all my CDs and DVDs clean and free of scratches; that lasts for a while until my brothers get their hands on my stuff.  Man, I really need to move out.

I\'ve been lucky enough to not have any major problems yet other than an occasional game not reading the first time I put it in. One thing that worries me though is that my roommate has a tendency to just push the disc tray in instead of using the button. I\'ve heard that this can cause it to jam and I\'ve told him that, but he still does it. Has anyone else heard about problems caused in this way? Because if he does screw it up I\'m gonna take his to make up for it (it\'s still in the box and untouched...)

I feel all of your pain.  I have had my PSX2 since Oct.  I had no problems with it but all of a sudden I was watching Gladitor and half way through the movie I got that "Unable to read disc".  I thought nothing of it tookthe disc out and wiped it off it was fine.  But last week my PSX2 went skitzo.  It would read a game or a DVD.  All it would do was say reading disc forlike 10 sec and nothing would happen.  I brought it back to where I bought it from (Media Play), they tested it out and the same thing was happened again.  They took my info and they said that they have to talk to the corporate headquarters and they will call me tomorrow(FRIDAY).  They said that they will either get me another PSX2 or give me my money back.  Hopefully it will end up the way I want it too.  But Sony needs to do something about this problem and fix it fast.

Listen, it\'s not sony\'s fault, if you take care of your system you wont have those probs. The day i got my ps2, i opened the box and took it out slowly and carefully and before i even unwrapped it i read the whole instructions booklet through. I then went into the main menu and made sure that everything was fine and got myself used to the system, then i chucked the disk in and played to my heart\'s desire! No problemo here

You could put the damn thing in a bomb shelter! It doesnt mean something bad COULDNT possibly happen! Some things are flooks, and some are avoidable. The people that realize this are better off. It never just happens. There is always a reason or cause for anything.

My Ps2 (bought in the UK) has a 1 year guarantee.  I wonder why that should vary from country to country?  You can bet that it will go wrong 366 days after I bought it though - that is just my kind of luck!

That\'s a crock, man.  I take VERY good care of my PS2.  I dust it off every day, I don\'t use ANY 3rd-party accessories with it, I take all of the safeguards mentioned in the PS2 manual when operating it, etc., etc.  Electronics can indeed be prone to mechanical failure due to the workmanship of the actual product.  Example: My original PSX was treated like TOTAL **** by my family (disc door was always slammed down, discs were scratched to hell, it survived two mods, it was dropped from up to 6 feet several times); the really funny part was that the damn thing STILL kept on ticking.  I\'ve taken much better care of my new PS2 console and now its become a total nightmare.  Something\'s wrong here.  Not necessarily anyone\'s fault, but the problem still remains.

Now, Sony releases the PS2, which ends up being a very RARE console during the holidays.  People like me buy it to find that it stops working to its specifications after a mere month (well, I guess I\'m sort of grateful that it happened before the piss-poor 90-day warranty on the US model).  Now what am I going to replace it with?  Nothing I guess, because nobody has it in stock.  So I guess I just have to send mine in for repairs (even though I have a piece of paper in my hands that\'s supposed to provide me with a replacement no questions asked).  Get a clue, Sony!  Fabrication excuses are just not good enough when it comes to consumer loyalty.  Sony fanboys PROBABLY don\'t like to hear this, especially if they have a PS2 that still works.

A lot of people like to think of Sony as a premium name for consumer electronics in general, but if the PS2 is REALLY this delicate (makes me wonder.....), I don\'t know what to think.  I\'ll just be happy when my machine works again.

Dude I would stay at Sony\'s door on this one.  Keep calling until you piss everyone off.  Make sure that when you send this thing off you don\'t void your warranty.  Cause if it comes back still not working your up that creek, and you know which one I mean.

I hate to hear that happen to anyone especially since it means it could happen to me or someone else.

Yeah, I\'ll keep in touch with Sony.  About the voided warranty thing, you would hope that they\'d replace the warranty seal with a fresh one after making repairs to the console.  The Sony tech quoted me 15-20 business days on the phone (which works out to be about a month if you count out Saturday and Sunday), but I guess I have no choice but to ship it in.  I pay for the shipping one way.

The other option I have is crossing my fingers and hoping that my store will get a PS2 in stock within the next couple of weeks.  I spoke to my manager he says that they\'ll be setting one aside for me for my replacement plan if that\'s what I want to do.

ALL IS GOOD I GOT A NEW PSX2.  BUT TO ALL YOU THAT SAY THAT WE DONT TAKE CARE OF YOUR MACHINES YOU ARE ALL WRONG.  IF SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS WIHT THEM I DOUBT THAT IT IS OUR FAULT.  I TALKED TO THE GUY AT MEDIA PLAY AND HE SAID THAT THEY ARE HAVING SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE MACHINES THAT WERE RELEASED THE DAY IT CAME OUT BASICALLY THE FIRST SHIPMENT AVALIABLE TO THE PUBLIC.  BUT NOT ALL ARE DOING IT. HE SAID THAT HE HAS HAD 3 OR 4 CALLS TO THE STORE ABOUT THE PSX2 WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS.

I believe that Sony has a service center for every region in the US.  I live in Arizona and the tech I spoke to told me to ship my PS2 to the following address:

Sony Service Center
14450 Myford Ave.
Irvine, CA 92606

You have to enclose a letter with the package with your name, street address, telephone number, PS2 model and serial numbers, and a description of your problem.  I think you actually have to speak to SCEA first before sending your console in for repairs though.

I\'m curious b/c I\'m wondering if I\'ll have to send mine off as well.  These probs I\'ve been experiencing with Smackdown2 are recurring and after checking Sony\'s site it seems to be a design flaw in the PS2 that it won\'t play some games for PS1.

Of course, if it\'s not a flaw, then I would like an exchange or a fix.

Guys, those of you who got their PS2s stopped working, after you finished playing with it did you put it in standby mode only or put it in standby mode then turn off the main switch? You see, I\'m living in UK and have a US PS2 (bought it through auction). It has only been 2 weeks since the nice man from Parce Force handed me the PS2 package.... at 8 in the morning.
Well, I took care of it like crazy and still running smoothly while hoping that nothing bad would come as of my effort guarding my PS2. I haven\'t tried watching DVDs though \'cos I haven\'t got the time to search for a Region 1 DVD. I only have 3 games so far, TTT, Smuggler\'s Run, and Dynasty Warriors(DW) 2. The one and only slow down I had was when playing DW2, it was like 40-50 of those angry troops stabbing me from front, sides and behind.
I read on the reply above that you\'ll get a 1 year warrany for a UK PS2. Then the only thing came accross my mind was that there are three stages where PS2 was distributed. First is Japan. Just tell me what happened during the course of the rise of the PS2 there? Problems: DVD-Magic Gate issues, Region "Glitch" issue, Memory Card Issues, Compatibility issues, and Jaggy games (well actually this one is software related).
Second is US. Learning from mistakes from the first rise, the games companies (such as Namco with their TTT), put anti-aliasing on their TTT, DVD drivers are built-in hence utility Disc was obselete (also to protect from Mod chip disc swapping region neutralizer), PCMCIA slot changed to Expansion Bay and so on. Then came up another problem (during their QC probably) that about 50% of PS2 will last no longer than 30-90 days (hence the 90 day warranty :crap: )
Then came the third stage, Europe. 3 times a charm, they learn from aaaaallll their mistakes and came up with a more perfect PS2, that\'s why we haven\'t heard any complaints from European PS2 users...... yet

Man, they\'re Sony for crying out loud :crying: , they are known for their quality products! Are they desperate to release this PS2 that they ignore those flaws :boom:

Damn, I just hope my PS2 won\'t start acting up :sconf: . Hey, I\'ve got a five year planning ahead of us..... especially... ooohhh ..... THE BOUNCER!!!! :facelick:

Sony releases there date and said that there would be 1000 000 consoles after relizing that there was no way in hell that would happen they said that there was 500 000 consoles. It\'s pretty obvious that ALL the consoles where rushed through production, with all the REALLY delicate parts they are VERY prone to problems. I have 2 ps1\'s one is 4 years old and has been thrown ACROSS rooms has been dropped much higher than 7\' and is still ticking strong, the other I bought 6 months ago [ well my bros did] and while the lid was open it was kicked off and now has burn marks [ lit on fire while i was soldering sum stuff on] and has super glue practically everywhere and with the help of a toothpick I can STILL get the thing to work.
My ps2 which I bought on launch works flawlessly [ well except when I rented PAPILLION the other day and it wouldn\'t detect the disk i then cleaned it and it worked fine] and if it doesn\'t work I will make SURE SOny heres about it and either replaces or fix\'s it, i\'m not too worried about going a month or so without it because I havn\'t played the thing THAT much since there arn\'t any GOOD games out [ IMO ].

Nah My PS2 is still going strong.

I still play each of my Six games more then once. Midnight club is getting the most of my PS2 gaming time and also the DVD player is in overtime. My PS2 will be ALIVE again come March. Gotta get my hands on about 6 games this coming March for my PS2.

I\'m also starting to have reason to believe that they rushed the PS2 off the production lines because the quality doesn\'t seem to be there.  Like I mentioned earlier, I NEVER had problems with my PSX, with all of the abuse it had taken over the years.  Well, I\'m getting ready to ship off my PS2 tomorrow and we\'ll see what happens.  All I\'ve got to say at this point is that this problem better not recur or else I\'m going to be one angry person.  I\'ve owned several consoles and not one of them had stopped working due to defect (this one conks out in a month!).

Maybe I\'m lucky but my PS2 hasn\'t hesitated to work at all. Even when I\'ve moved it from place to place. One day it was on the trunk of our car and it cooled down a little ( "cold" winter here - \'bout -15 degrees celsius ) and the games too. But they worked like new ones when I dried them out at home. Won\'t do it again for sure \'tho because there\'s a big risk of the machine breaking.

Still no problemo. And I hope nothing will happen. I\'ve had my PS for about three years and I\'ve moved it from place to place hundreds of times and it still works like a dream.

I hope PS2 is as strong device :)
