Title: Anti-aliasing for PS2? Questions... Help!
Post by: on December 31, 2000, 11:08:56 AM
Anyone know the details regarding anti-aliasing (to reduce or remove "jaggies")?

I was led to belive that the PS2 possessed this ability. Yet the games that I play don\'t seem to take advantage of the feature. If a developer enables it does it cause such a large performace hit that they end up leaving it off?

There are some games like Tekken Tag and Ready to Rumble that seem like they may be using anti-aliasing here and there. But I could be mental. I didn\'t think that Anti-aliasing was an area specific option (with my pc card\'s it\'s got nothing to do with the game, it\'s either on or off). If it is a feature it would be nice if you could "force" it on in the PS2\'s options area.

My apoligies if this topic has been covered, I did some searches and didn\'t come up with anything.

Thanks!

I\'ll try to answer as best as I can.

The PS2 has NO hardware anti-aliasing. With that said, the PS2 is also very capable of multiple anti-aliasing techniques through software. Some would have you belive that it causes a huge hit to the PS2\'s preformance since Volition\'s Summoner only runs at 30fps. This simply is not true. Summoner runs at 30fps because it is an RPG and thus dosen\'t need a high refresh rate. 60fps is only really necessarry for fighting & racing types of games where the scenery changes very quickly and drastically.

Konami and Namco have both announced that their PS2 games (Metal Gear Solid 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament) feature anti-aliasing in some form and run at a solid 60fps.

The biggest reason you are seeing jaggies in games is because of the interlace flickering which is a temporary problem. Developers just need a better understanding of how to exploit the PS2\'s hardware.
