In the US release of the Sony Playstation2 there is a Major DVD-Rom
Error. This error is the fact that sonys dvd-rom cannot play Gold
buttom DVDs. At this time it may not seem like a big problem but in due
fact, the newest DVD\'s to hit the stores will all be gold DVD buttoms, casuing
your sony DVD-Rom addon, to be rendered useless. My thoughts on this are
that the DVD-Rom is pretty much a useless addon, maybe not now but will be
when the new DVDs arrive. Sony didnt take much time Creating this as you can
tell, and there are NO plans in any way of them fixing this error, a true
waste of money.
Sincerly,
Unsatisfied Customer

Wait... what??
You mean gold "bottom" DVD\'s?? Moron, all DVD\'s are ALREADY gold bottom.
-
Yea i noticed but not all DVDS are gold buttom some are silver. even though 90% are gold. check out your local blockbuster to see the movie "scary movie" its in silver. And i just found out that the porblem may be "macvision" imputted into your VCR, the conflicts with the Ps2 anti-piracy chip.
do your research.

Yea I was watching XMen, which sucked so much, and at 2 points in the movie it flashed xmen in the bottom corner and skiped a few scences and went back to widescree, it was so annoying.

I think you got mine by accident. Send it to me and I will send you yours. Sorry for the mistake.

The manual even states that DVD\'s are gold bottom, so how can it not play gold bottom DVD\'s
-
Mine plays perfect. No problems at all.
-
I\'m not sure this affects all PS2s, since mine works with both silver and gold bottom DVDs
There are obviously defective consoles out there though. Good luck with Sony tech support, they\'re sloooow.

My PS2 plays gold DVDs fine! :D

I called SCEA technical support yesterday and they said that SOME gold bottomed DVD may not work in the PS2. I posted on a earlier thread that I had a problem witht he Matrix. I put in a gold bottomed DVD, Independence Day and watched it all the way thru. Didn\'t miss a beat!!!!!! It must be a sporatic thing. I did also get the Dolby digital to come on and I have it hooked up to a Dolby digital Sony reciever with Harmon Kardon separates and it sounds phenomenal!!!!
Happy New Years everyone!!!!

They do not just make DVD\'s gold, "just because", the dual layered discs are the only ones that have gold on the bottom. It is used because the laser and see though the layer and read the layer that is under it.
Also, from what I am hearing it isn\'t some "gold" problem, well, it kind of is. It sounds like most of these problems are happening when there is a layer change, which only happens on gold discs because they are the only ones with layers, duh. There are many players that have problems with layer changes. This is just something that we have to put up with. DVD technology is going though a kind of puberty. We just have to wait for it to develop.
I have this problem with Fight Club, however I found a way around it. I just have to turn the diagnostic mode on before I player it each time (if you need help on diagnostic mode it is on page 9). A pain in the ass, but if it lets me watch Fight Club, I\'ll be happy. Sony just better fix this in the DVD update.

I\'m still happy \'bout PS2 DVD -player. It\'s our first DVD -player and now is much used :)
It\'s just extra, and it was meant to be for DVD-games at first I think. Then Sony decided to add a movie-player to the same package.
Now Sega has a new marketing tactic: they sell DC and a decent DvD-player for the price of PS2 :)

But you can use your PS2 for see ALL DVD-ROM´s?? so, if i´ve got an enciclopaedya on DVDROM format, i can see it on my ps2???
-
Well i did a simple test on my DVD rom, i bypassed the VCR and hooked straight up to the TV usuing the three cables supplied.(red,white,yellow). And i played the nutty professor 2: the klumps just fine. But heres an idea, what if you have an older model tv? and well you cant play DVD through your VCR for the fact of sony\'s anti-protection chip and \'macvision\'.(it screws up your dvd movie, so cant be copied, a real hassle). So you have an older model tv, and no connection to connect straight through the tv, and not the VCR? you hjave to be the adaptor, which is sonys smart way of sucking you into buying more accesiors, after you already pay a forturne for this system. hmmmmmm.

FackinKubuss....
ummm Xmen does that cuz its a special feature in the film that lets you watch deleted scenes during the moving...I think its called branching or something...you can turn it off in the extra/special menu of the DVD
-
Ohhhhhhh, okay thanks.

I tried to play \'Final Destination\' last time, and it kept saying \'Can\'t play this disc\' or something,.. probably it\'s because of the \'zone problem\' of the disc...
I hate that and that was a waste of money to rent the DVD. Shouldn\'t it can play all zones anyway?

Yeah it should. I recnetly got off the phone with scea tech support(30 minute wait). And I inquired the dvd general erros which you guys were experiencing, and the tech rep. said sony was coming with a new model. Now, this was a concern as i waundered if they were making a whole new system, or just an addon, and would it cost us anything, after we have already bought their product. The tech stated that they are making an addon, but thoughts of a new system are in play, and that it would be FREE, to original buyers. She also stated as a final thought that nothing has been etched in glass yet, and that these details she provided could be changed. What i can see happening my self is:
-New Ps2 Model
-No addon
-Cost to us
-No Help what so ever for our troubles
Knowing Sony this could very well happen.
