For two freaking days I did some little research on the console gamer, hardcore gamer, PC gamer, casual gamer, and Kid gamer. I did this through percents, before I continue, I would like to tell everyone this: Once you read this reply to it, nothing silly, just reply with your thoughts on this. It took me two days to get this information from sources. If I do not get enough replies or intelligent ones, I will stop doing these fantastic searches and do my great work somewhere else.
The source for my information were, Mike of Wal-Mart: he gave me some polls he did outside of the videogame section, Techtv.com, The Screen Savers, EBWorld of Little Rock, Style in The Arkansas Democrate Gazette, and Gamespot polls.
Here are the results:
Of the PC gamer:
X-Box got 79%
PS2 got 29%
Gamecube got 2.3%
Sony shoud jump in the air after they see this poll from the PC Gamer because this is great. Not too many PC Gamers would go after a console or the PS2, because they prefer PC Games, and they like Microsoft, but Sony has started to market toward the PC Gamer directly, because they have captured lots of PC developers from the pass year, that\'s why I think the number is so high. Because the PS2 is a computer entertainment system, which attracts PC Gamers, Hardcore gamers, casual gamer, and a kid gamer alike. Nintendo needs to work a little bit more in this market.
Of the Console gamer:
PS2 got 81%
Gamecube got 55%
X-Box got 19%
That is a good number for X-Box, the conosle hasn\'t anything specific but it still got a good percent, just think what will happen when it is final and more people know about it. I guess console gamers have finally bought MS preaching about not only concentrating on the PC gamer, but the console gamer as well. Sony/Nintendo are in dead heat on this one. I expect Sony to keep a good hand on the console gamer though.
The Big Prize
The Casual Gamer:
PS2 got 73%
Gamecube 59%
Microsoft, I can\'t believe but 25%that\'s a good number, the console isn\'t finish yet, I guess those ads in stores are kicking in. They cut Sony\'s number a little bit, I expect Sony to be in the sixties or fifties once it is release.
The Semi Prize
Hardcore Gamer- Will play anything.
PS2 got 55.5%
Gamecube got 41%
Microsoft got 39%
This is too close to call, while I was researching this, I was even shocked, Nintendo should be the worried one.
The Meni-Prize
Kid Gamer:
PS2 got 2.3%
Gamecube got 97%
Microsoft got 1.4%
No comment.
We are in dead heat, the result, there will be no winner in this next generation, Microsoft knows it, Nintendo knows it, and Sony knows it. When X-Box and Gamecube are released these numbees will change but not by much, they can only go down or up. This war cannot be won by a wide percent either "FACT". Because Sony is marketing toward every gamer, so is Microsoft, and Nintendo alike. PC developers are developing for Consoles, and vis-versa. Times have really changed.
Here are my predictions, for what percent the market will hold:
PS2 - 59.2%
Gamecube - 48.2%
X-Box - 57.3%
It will be too close to call
OR
PS2 - 56.3%
Gamecube - 50%
X-Box - 57.8%
Still to close to call
OR
PS2 - 57.3%
Gamecube - 58%
X-Box - 57.1%
Too close to call.
There will be no winner because each will not make any mistakes. E3 want decide the winner, nor will almighty Square.
Whatever system you get, all of them will have something unique.

Where\'s the Dreamcast? Not accounting for a console that has allready sold around 4 million (I think) is certainly a major flaw in your research.
What are the percentages at the begining?

If you want to include Dreamcast in which I didn\'t sorry guys, forgive me. Just add to the PC Gamer subtract X-Box\'s number 79% and u will get 70% while, PS2 will have 20%, and Gamecube will have .9%, and the almighty Dreamcast will have 12.3%.
For every category, whoever has the most subtract 2.1%, and divide by 4 to get DC\'s number.

Guys the DC will not last long that\'s one reason it shouldn\'t be on the list..
Like EA said there\'s only room for 3 console, Gamecube, PS2, and the X-Box.

Nice post The Game.I love reading your topics.I also believe that no console will completly dominate this generation,every system will have an equal share.One will be the winner but not by very much,that is already clear.

Its close to the real one, it took 2 days to do this for you guys, and this is how u treat a person. My god, you people like you make me so ****ing sick to my stomach, I wasn\'t bias in that post. Infact I was praising the X-Box....

Hmmm Made some interesting reading. however i believe that once PS2, Xbox and gamecube start to do some "real" advertising then it will all change as all those casual gamers will start to actually get some infomation on what the different consoles can do.

The Poll is interesting. It would of made more sense to include the DC. But either way...
I would take the POLL after E3 is over. Or just recount the POLL after E3. That way, each console will have a fair share of attenion.

I agree that it is interesting. But to not include the Dreamcast because in your opinion "It will be dead by then" pretty much negates any credibility that you may have gotten through researching other things. You say "The allmighty Dreamcast will have 12.3%, but look at what the gamecube had: .9%
and the PS2 had 20%, or 7.7% more than the Dreamcast. Your numbers alone indicate that it is far from being dead and buried.

1. The opinions of 1, 2, 5, 10 or even 20 thousand people don\'t mean a damn. The console war is going to be decided in millions.
2. Its too early to call. Do this poll after E3 2001 and there will be different results.
3. Dreamcast should be included as a viable contender.
4. Why are those percentages adding to over 100?

Thanks for all your work The Game! I would really like to see things work out this way. Hopefully the market will be large enought to sadle three systems, that would only help consumer choice and get some good competition going between the three for First Party game dominence.

Let me get this straight, you left out DC because you and Trip Hawkins don\'t think it will last, nevermind the fact that it is sold out of nearly every store around my area as of now (personal research), shoots down your biased and empty research.
This poll is completely worthless as the current winner was left out, two consoles which aren\'t even out yet or started their own avalanche of advertising al la PS2.
The totals can add to over 100% because people, like me, buy more than one or all of the consoles. But this poll should be taken with a bucket of salt and should be regarded as the opinion of the author and not anything close to factual.

I don\'t think that E3 will sway any casual gamer\'s opinions at all.
Mostly I think this because no casual gamer has any idea what the hell E3 is.
If I asked my wife, the ultimate casual gamer, what E3 is, she would look at me like I had 4 heads.
The advertising blitz is what will make or break PS2, X-Box, GC and DC in regards to this much sought-after piece of the game industry pie.
I think Sega was very wrong with their initial, "Let\'s show gamers what kind of an attitude we have by showing wise-ass video game characters host a rave," ad campaign. It sucked. Nobody saw in-game stuff.
I think Sony is dead wrong with their ad campaigns. They don\'t have one!! Since its release, I have seen maybe 2 different commercials for PS2.
What\'s my point?
Well, exclusive video game conventions will not sway casual gaming opinions. ADVERTISING will. All companies involved in this regard are very very wrong in this case.
Show more in-game footage on many, many commercials. That\'s it.
This is shaping up to be a battle of EPIC proportions. I believe that the only way to win casual gamers from ANY side is to advertise out the ass.
Now, yeah, I think E3 will definitely sway some hardcore gamers, who don\'t own a PS2 or a DC yet, and are waiting to see the future.
As for me, I have said it before, I have been gaming since the early days of Atari/Colecovision, and will always play video games, but I made my choice with PS2. I gotta stick by it now. Besides, I think it really is the best one out, and coming out.

Why would the casual gamer care about having in fgame footage in the commercials? They don\'t. They care about great graphics, that is why all the Final Fantasy commercials have NO ingame and all FMV, they want to pimp the graphics (althoguh not realistically) to the casual gamer. The Sega commericals work just for that purpose, the Jet Set Radio commercial is the best I\'ve seen.

I haven\'t seen any Jet commercials, but, I would think the best way to "pimp" the graphics would be to show them in action, on the screen. Why wouldn\'t they wanna do that? \'Specially with something as graphically impressive as Metal Gear?
