Well I\'m not sure exactly how much that is; I\'m unaware of the exchange rate.  But if you can get a TV with Component jacks(Red, Green Blue) then that\'s the bomb I hear.

Otherwise S-video is nice and it\'s what I use on my 27" Zenith, $329 from Sears.
Title: A good TV for 150 pounds?????

Well for that amount of money it may be hard to get a really good TV, I suggest a Sony VVega, since they are the best. I know for a fact that 1 pound is equal to $1.50 in the US, so for about double of what you were willing to spend you could get a 27" VVega, or you could do some hunting and get the 20" VVega. Its too bad I can\'t recommend my TV because it costlike 1500 pounds(its the Sony wega XBR400,its worth the money). By the way, the reason I keep pushing the VVega is because it can resolve PS2 resolution effortlessly. Component video is the way to go.

Check the big tesco stores, they have very cheap widescreen televisions!

I just got a 31" RCA TV with audio ins and outs with S-Video jack.

It cost me about $279 US (on sale at Bradlees) and is awesome!!

Well, I did upgrade from a 19", so....take that for what its worth!!  :D

Anyway, how much is 150 UK?

*sigh*

It\'s spelled Wega, pronounced Vega.  No big deal I guess. :)

taking a hint from the germans, looks like

Volkswagon, is pronounced volksvagon

*useless tidbit of knowledge*
adolf hitler was responsible for naming them volksvagon, it literally means "cars for the people"

Volkswagen (VW) is pronounced \'folksvagen\'. :)

Those Germans are crazy (uh, hey The Eye ;)). Nah, they make fine cars.

Well the good people on Ars say it\'s not supposed to be a W it\'s just a normal V with a cool shadow on the logo.

Well, I don\'t know about that nO-One, but on Sony\'s own site it says "WEGA TV\'S". There\'s also this little explanation:

Sony televisions that incorporate flat screen technology, nicknamed for the brightest star in the constellation Lyra

nO-One- Ars is definitley not the place I\'d go to for Home Theater info. :)

http://www.sony.com/wega (although vega also works in the url, look in the address bar, it says wega either way).  Now put your pointer over the big word WEGA at the top, it says \'Pronounced VAY•guh.\'

Also go to http://www.sonystyle.com and you will see the word Wega throughout the site.

OK, in the German language "W" is pronounced as a "V" would sound.  So WEGA is the right spelling, while VEGA is how you\'d pronounce it.  Hope this clears up everything.

heres an idea, you dont really need to buy a new tv just for your ps2. of course if you really want to then go mad, but my suggestion would be to buy the adaptor, that allows full function of the ps2, and your DVD, yet hooks directly into your tv with just one snap!(no more 3 tricky cords).

Yeah, but you lose MAJOR quality when using an R/F adaptor.  I got a great Panasonic 27 inch with S-video and Component inputs for 350.  The model is CT-27D20 if you want to check it out.

Well it doesn\'t make any difference to me if it\'s spelled wega or vega. But if you check the A/V forum on Ars they have had some pretty interesting discussions about home theater setups.
Me I just bought a nice Philips 29" flat screen TV the 29pt9006.(It\'s really sad that in my line of work I know the serial numbers of alot of products).I decided not to go 32" because most of the things I watch aren\'t 16.9.

I went to Best Buy today.  They have the best TV I\'ve ever seen.  It\'s a Panasonic Hi-Definition right up next to 3 Sony Vegas and it looked better than all of them.  It was about $200 more and 4" smaller than the Vegas next to it.

Sony WEGAs are not always the best TVs on the market.  The Panasonic Tau line is VERY competitive with the V-series WEGAs and comes in at the price of the S-series TVs.  Do not be pigeon-holed into thinking the WEGA is the best just because everyone says it is.

Amen to that!  Also do not believe anything you can get at Best Buy is High-end, especially their audio.

Hey THX, do you mind explaining a bit more on the Dolby Digital/DTS thing?  I just bought a DVD that has the Dolby Digital logo.  Only when I play it thru my PS2 it doesn\'t decode into surround, it just stays in 2 channel.  I know my receiver is set up correctly b/c I just watched Perfect Storm and had good sound decoding.

Am I wrong in thinking all Dolby Digital DVDs are true surround encoded?

Yeah, sorry about that, I almost forgot to recommend the Panasonics. You have the standard models that offer component video-ins, and then you have the Superflat series(very nice), then finally you have their Tau series(top of the line). All of them are great and the Tau series is comaprable to the Wega FV series, but the Wega XBR400 is still king of the hill. Oh by the way, JVC also offers a great 27-inch d series TV that has a 2-line digital comb filter, as well as component video and a nearly flat screen for about $350. You should give it a look.

Peace

Don\'t over look Phillips magnavox, its seems to be underrated here. I\'ve got a 36in with all the options, and a friend of mine has a 36in Sony(not Wega)and he agrees with me when I say that the picture and sound are a lot better on my tv. Plus the price on the Phillips magnavox is pretty good. You could also look at the floor models, they will drop the price a great deal.My tv was $599.00 on sale and since it was a floor model they dropped it to $399.00, and since it was missing the manuel(sp?) they dropped it down again to $299.00. So I got a really good 36in tv with all the options for $299.00, so look around alot before you buy.

I got it at BestBuy, but any big chain will make you a deal on the floor models.

i think sony wega is kinda overprice?  well, the picture quality is extremely awesome but i am thinking about buying a widescreen projection LCD hdtv.  hopefully there is a hdtv that can support 60 fps progressively.

Post by: on January 03, 2001, 01:19:26 AM
i have a 27 inch wega tv, set me back bout 800 bucks at the time. i regret it now, i think i shouldve gotten the toshiba 36 inch tv, with the same amount of money. size does matter when it comes to television sets, and the jump from 27-36 inches is tremendous.

sure the clarity is good, but overated, almost all the channels look like poo, on the wega anyway since the filming of the programs are grainy low quality stuff(looks the same as on a regular tv). plus i dont have a dvd player, i bought the tv soley for my dreamcast, with s-video, looks kinda sweet, but the the positives outwiegh the negatives with the 36 inch toshiba, i wish i ve gotten that instead, with s-video on the toshiba i dont hink the picture clarity between the two tv\'s will be much different, just flatter on the wega, and a bit sharper. but shiyet, 27 inch moniter seems tiny now when i look at my friends 36 inch wega, or when i go to the local electronic stores.

Title: I highly recomend the Wega 36" XBR400
Post by: on January 04, 2001, 02:12:36 PM
I picked up the 36" sony wega 400xbr a few weeks back. It went for about $3200 out the door with the custom stand designed for it, a 5 year warranty and deliver/set-up from good guys.

I have been extremely pleased with it. 36" is the biggest tv you can get without having to worry about screen "burn-in" found in projection tv\'s. There is one 52" panasonic that has no burn in but it goes for 12 grand.

The 400xbr is a HDTV ready tv which means it can support and display high def sources like DVD and HDTV. There is also a 4x line doubler that works horizontaly and vertically so you can get an amazingly good picture from just regular old cable (without lines through it). DirectTV is reccommended though if you really want to be happy.

DVDs look amazing, very film like and detailed, friends always go "WOW" when they first see it.

The User Interface and remote is really well done also. Great features and easy to use.

It is also worth mentioning that there is support for up to 2 componet connections, 2 svideo connections and 3-4 (i forget exactly) composite connections. So there is lots of room to play.

PS2 and dreamcast look absolutely amazing running through s-video on this. If you are a hard-core gamer, I highly reccomend it!

I bought a 52 inch Phillips Magnavox over a year ago for 1300 dollars with the glass cover..the glass is a must. I just wanted the biggest cheapest tv I could find with component video input to hold me over until hdtv came down in price. Looks like I may wait til 2002 to upgrade. You have roughly 300 dollars to spend, try to find one at that price with component video is all I can say and get an extended warranty if thats possible. If not then just get something decent with s-video input.

I just bought a wall sized HDTV. The picture quality is alright but a bit small. I want to add a full sized orchestra and a small theater sized screen. Don\'t laugh guys it may be small but I am just getting myself of the ground.........

*shudders*

huh?.......wha?............where am I? Oh, I was dreaming. Did I say anything stupid?
