Ok, this is gonna take some explaining. Currently, I have my PS2 hooked to my computer, with the video in through an S-video cable into a TV card, and the audio running through my SB Live! MP3+5.1 soundcard. I really want to use the optical port on the PS2. If I get the Creative Optical Digital I/O add-on card, will I be able to run the audio through that into my speakers? Any help would be appreciated, as I don\'t want to waste $80 or so if it\'s not gonna work. Thanks!

Then why did you post at all?
As for your question yes you would be able to use your speakers. What I don\'t understand is that you said that the audio from your PS2 is running through your SB card right? Shouldn\'t it be playing on your speakers already?

Ah, well, that\'s what I want to change. Yes, the sound is already coming through the speakers, but it\'s really annoying. Because I have an S-video cable, I have to use the standard red and white audio plugs. However, the only way I can use them is to plug them into a left/right...uh...combiner, I guess, then plug that into my soundcard. The plugs don\'t fit all that well, so they sometimes fall out. It\'s really a pain, so I want to simplify the process. Thanks for the reply.

I suggest that you try some monster cables first. They are about $30 and if they don\'t work you can just return them. Monster cables give a lot better connection than regular A/V cables. But if you REALLY want to use the optical port on the PS2 then go ahead and get the I/O add-on.

I don\'t think that the optical out on the PS2 will allow you to send anything other than a digital signal through it. This means you\'d only be able to watch DVDs on your computer (assuming you have a DSP in there and the DVD has a digital audio signal).
Someone correct me if I\'m wrong please.

From what I understand he should be able to pick up the audio and video signal from the PS2. Don\'t all of the PS2 games have a digital audio signal? Why wouldn\'t they?

Yeah, that\'s wrong. I only have Optical Output on mine and I hear everything just fine. I don\'t play DVDs on my PS2 since I have a stand alone player so I am talking about the games.
It won\'t be in DD, it will just be regular old Pro-Logic, but it will still sound just fine.
Seems like a lot of expense for just a cable constantly falling out. Why don\'t you just use tape? To spend 40 bucks on an optical chord and 80 bucks on a card seems kind of useless when you can just use tape. It doesn\'t sound that much better for the games anyway. DVD playback you would notice a difference with though. So is it worth it? Up to you..
I say get some tape and do it up!!

That\'s what\'s so annoying, the thing IS taped...it keeps the wires from falling out, but seems to do very little keeping the connectors touching the right place. It\'s a tough setup to describe.
Also, it wouldn\'t be all that expensive. My $80 estimate was total, $60 for the card and roughly $20 for the cable (depending on brand).

Doesn\'t that sound card have a digital input? Spending the extra $60 seems like a waste, you can buy a new sound card for that much.

You have RCA plugs going into a mini phone plug right. LIke what you use for headphones. Where is the bad connection? is it at the mini plug end or the RCA end. Maybe you have a bad wire on the RCA plug. You could always buy nice ends for the wire and redo the ends. They are real easy to do.
