Title: Timesplitters VS Unreal tournament
Post by: Julien on January 03, 2001, 06:24:55 AM
Hi guys,

I actually own SSX and DW2, 2 games that really kick ass
IMHO, and i\'m thinking about buying a FPS, but can\'t
decide between TS and UT?

Any idea?

You got the same problem as I do. They don\'t rent games here.

I own Timesplitters and can say that if you\'re searching for a good multiplayer action this game rocks! We played, like, ten hours this game in two days with my friend :)

Single-player is good too; quite hard; especially the challenge -mode :)

UT isn\'t that fast and I think TS has more replayability.

Go for TS. It has had many good reviews.

For the PS2? Definately Timesplitters. UT is a kick ass game but it loses some of its luster without the online capabilities.

I have played timesplitters and the framerate is awesome smooth all the way. I have played unreal on the pc and it rocked also. the only thing i dont like on timesplitters is the controls, you are given no option to change them whatsoever and i feel that in order to get decent accuracy then different controls are needed. I cant really say that much on unreal tournament because i have never played it on the ps2.

Do you like it more on the PS2 or PC? The only reason I ask is because the controls are very different.

I haven\'t played UT but I can tell you that Timesplitters kicks ass. The game zips and if you get a chance to play this thing with a surround sound system look out. It totally changes the whole experience.

Chalk up yet another vote for TS here, though I\'ll probably end up getting UT as well. Not to mention just about any other FPS that comes out for PS2...(I\'m kind of a junkie when it comes to these games.:D)

Good decision Julien! UT (PS2 version) is ass compared to TS, UT for PC, or even Q3:A on DC or PC.

What are you saying here. The best first person shooter is UT for PC. Do you want to know the reason why? it\'s because that in UT PC, you can communicate with other players (playing online), and you can order your troops in to defend, attack, get the flag, etc... where in timesplitters you cannot do anything from above + the controls in TS is well annoying!!!!

I\'ve played UT on PC ( I own it ) and it rocks. Truly. The multiplayer over internet is experience not to be missed. The game can\'t be even half as good on PS2, because it isn\'t so fast ( if compared to TS ) and I heard it looks kinda ugly on PS2.

Get TS; it\'s pure speed, the levels are good ( especially for multiplayer... again :) ) and there\'s plenty of characters! Plenty.

The game\'ll keep you happy just as long as you have friends to play it with.

Get UT for PC if you have one.

Well, I haven\'t played UT for PS2 yet, but, I, like many others, must say that TimeSplitters kicks some solid booty.

It has great levels and unlockable ones at that, and, if you ever get tired of them, hell, make yer own!!

I don\'t think there is a level editor with PS2 UT, is there?

Uhhhh....I said TimeSplitters, and all those other games were better than UT on PS2, I never dissed UT on PC. And the controls are fine in TS.

My vote goes to Timesplitters.

I would go for the UT, but it\'s for the PC. I don\'t like first person shooter in consoles, they\'re too slow to turn and accuracy is minimal. Where in PC you can use the keyboard and mouse and pay as hard as you can. But since you\'re talking TS or UT for PS2, I would go for TS since I\'ve played it. I have nothing against the gameplay or anything, they\'re great and innovative but I just hate FPS controls on consoles. GO FOR TIMESPLITTERS.

Speaking of turning, why is it so much slower on consoles compared to PC\'s anyway? Considering how fast TS moves it seems inconsistent that turning takes so long. What\'s so different in the way each runs that makes it this way?

It\'s down to the controls, that is, the difference between using the mouse and an analog joystick.

The easiest way to think of the difference is to imagine trying to operate a PC with your PS2 controller instead of a mouse. With a mouse, you can move the pointer to any location on the screen in an instant with nothing more than a flick of the wrist. Whereas with a joystick, you have to carefully guide the mouse pointer to the required location.

Therefore this is the difference between using a mouse for FPSs compared to using a joystick.

hmmm... maybe the turning is little slower but I could be complaining about the missing jump-feature as well. the reason I\'m not complaining is because I don\'t need fast turning nor jumping.

Think the slower turning as more realistic feature :) I always thought that it was stupid to turn around like a lightning; it messed up your back-stabs mostly.

For exmpl. UT PC. You shoot opponent running ahead you with plasma rifle. The opponent doesn\'t die, he has 100 + energy and a vest etc. etc. Now this guy turns around as quickly as greased lighting and shoots you with his grenade launcher. Now you die immediately. This can\'t happen in the PS2 versino of UT or TS :)

just an example. and the turning is more and more faster more and more you learn to control the guy. But it still never can be as fast as a mouse. Why not complain about the aiming as well? It\'s much slower with a stick than a mouse, and harder too...

My point is that these complainments are meaningless.

I disagree, I feel the opposite is true. :)

Think about it, you\'re a hero with a gun, say James Bond, and you realise the enermy is behind you, what do you do?

a) Slowly turn around until the enery is in your direct line of sight. Or...

b) Swiftly twist you body and arm around in such a way that you\'re aiming at the enermy (almost instantly!).

In reality it would be \'b\', since \'a\' would leave you dead before you even see your enermy! :D

You can test this out for yourself! Stand up (go on, leave that comfy chair for a moment :)), and see how quickly you can point to any location within your room (even behind you).

You will find that by twisting and turning your body and arm, you can point to ANY location almost instantly (even behind you). If you had a gun in your hand, the same would be true!

Mouse control replicates this speed and flexibility, hence it is far more realistic IMO.

hmmm... now I agree :)

It is fast to turn yes. Fast like a speeding bullet :)

Ok, now, that quote of mine was supposed to be a "joke" ( wich you replied ), but now it stands for just wrong info. Thanks for pointing that out.

But make a 360 degree spin as fast as you could do with a mouse not falling to ground is hard. Try it. :)

Ok here goes {spin...drop...spin...drop...spin...yes!}

You\'re right, it\'s hard! :D

Do you know what\'s even harder?

Lets take Quake 3 for example. You can jump and spin easily over 360 degrees in the air and then you land and start running immediately and as steadily as you were running before the jump. Now try this :)

I have tried. And failed every time.

I just tried it, and I was ok! Not only that, I landed from a height of 50 feet whilst carrying weapons and ammo equal to my own body weight, but I wasn\'t hurt, I just said \'omph!\'. :)

Now call Guinness world records immediately! That\'s a new friggin\' record! :)

Now now.. this chat of ours is getting too off-topic now :) lets just say that mouse w/ keyboard works the best with FPS\'s, and to tell you all straight; buy keyboard and mouse for your PS2 as fast as it\'s possible.

I always fear I\'m spamming... :)

Thanks for the explanations, guys. Now I feel so smart!:D

And unless I\'m mistaken there is no option for using a mouse and keyboard in Timesplitters, though you can in UT.

Hi guys !

Ok, I got TS this weekend, and tried it...and it really rocks !

The controls are not really easy at the beginning, but you get used very quick. It\'s quite a hard game, first time
I thought I couldnt manage any of the levels, even in
easy mode.

Now I managed the first 3 ones, and it\'s really cool.
What I like about this game, it\'s quick and fun action,
and you don\'t need to have a lot of free time to play it ;
if you have only 10 minuts to play, you\'ll get fun anyway !!
