Ge-Force.2 GTS
It\'s the best you can get.(except for the GF-2 ULTRA)
And the ATi Radeon has been doing good things aswell.
Do not buy the Voodoo.5 it\'s underpowered a generation behind nVidia and ATi and it\'s a powerhog.
And 3dfx which made the Voodoo.5 has gone under:( and nVidia (which makes the Ge-Force) has bought all of 3dfx\'s technoligy.

You should be able to get a GeForce2 with at least 32 MB DDR Ram. I suggest Creative Labs "Annilator Pro" (sp?) or something simuliar. Just watch out for cheap no-name knock-offs, because they usually don\'t have the best quality or support.

I would have to say anything that has a geforce/nvidia chip in it. And make sure its DDR.

Creative have excellent support with fastrax and game launcher drivers.

I wouldn\'t use the drivers that come with the drivers it self.They\'re usually older drivers (depends on the manufactoring date) and thus slower.Use nVidia\'s reference drivers much faster and more stable and take less space.
But the drivers wich come with your card are alot easier to install than nVidia\'s.
I gained 40fps in q3a by installing leaked nVidia driver\'s (version 7,17) on my GF.2 GTS

Not too bad overall, except for the crappy video card. (16MB just won\'t cut it anymore..) The only other thing is the 17" monitor,.. I personally use a 19" and would never go to anything smaller now.

Then again, we can\'t all be l337!

Yuck!  You bought a pre-made computer?  And Compaq of all manufacturers???  It\'s the 21st century, everyone is buying the parts online and putting them together themselves.  Saves money and you know what is going on inside.  Especially the use of the ide channels, bios options & cooling possibilities.  Plus you don\'t get the tons and TONS of utterly useless software (which you pay for) and you yourself can decide which brand of what device to get.  Ie- Plextor, Klipsch, Samsung...

Hell maybe it\'s just me and my case of IRC l337n3ss as Regent said.  But Compaq?!?!?!  At least you got an Athlon which is the way to go nowadays.

For comparison purposes I bought this:

PIII 800EB @ 900
256mb pc133 @ 150
Asus CUSL2
Maxtor 20gig 7200rpm ata/100
Elsa Gladiac 32mb gf2 gts
SBLive! mp3+
Altec Lansing 3-pc speaker set
Pioneer 104s 10xDVD 40xCD
Plextor 8/4/32
Netgear 10/100
Alps 3.5" floppy drive
Zip 100
Micro-i Optical Mouse
Samsung 755DF 1600x1200 .20 dp
Fong Kai 603
PC Power Cooling 275w silencer PS

all for around $1850.  And this was back in August of 2000.

Good graphics card for $300:  GeForce2 GTS as stated above.  Check out arstechnica, anandtech or tomshardware for the latest benchmarks.  I bought the Elsa Gladiac because it\'s 32mb version outperformed the 64mb Hercules 3D Prophet in several bm tests.  The only reason I\'d buy a Radeon is for the All-In-Wonder model wich does snazzy DV editing.

Yep THX AMD is the thing to go with now adays.

256mb 133Mhz (thinking of adding another 265mb)
Abit KT7-RAID
Creative Ge-Force.2 GTS
SbLive
Sony cpd-G400 19" (love it)
Creative DVD 2x (slow I know)
Creative cdrw 4x4x24x (thinking of a great TDK 12x10x32x)
zip 100
Aopen hq45 mid tower (soon to be replaced with hq08 full tower)
IBM 30gig 7200rpm
Logitech mouseman wheel (there is no better mouse in the world)
And I use headphones

I have alot of creative stuff in my comp since I get it at cost. And I\'m expecting a big fat paycheck soon so I will be doing some upgrading soon:)

For 300 bucks, the PS2 is your best bet and your top of the line PC accelerator card can\'t even come close... :D
