Post by: on January 08, 2001, 12:52:44 PM
I read in my ops2 magasine that the ps2 might go up in price because tax may be added onto it because it isn\'t classed as a "computer" does anyone else have any infomation on this?

Equipped with a 128 bit microprocessor, a DVD player and an ability to
connect to the Internet, Sony believes the new units have grown up enough
from the first PlayStations to qualify as a computer. But the customs office
in Britain, where Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is based, rejected that
argument and put the PlayStation 2 in the same video games category as the
originals. That means each unit is subject to a duty of 2.2%, or roughly 6,
when imported for sale in the European Union. Products classified as
\'digital processing units\' - computers -  don\'t have to pay any import tax.
Sony spokeswoman Liz Ashford said that Sony is appealing against the
decision in London by asking for a departmental review. If that fails, legal
action could follow. EU Commission spokesman Jonathan Todd said the EU
established the rules for \'computers used basically for games\' earlier this
year when confronted with Sony rival Sega\'s similarly souped-up Dreamcast
  console."

I got the above thing from CNet... it was a post from another person....

Nobody now in the UK should have trouble getting hold of a PS2. Today i was in my city centre (Leicester) and the
following stores had at least 4 PS2s in stock and available off the shelf...

Curries
Wolworths
MVC

i also noticed a few dotted about the place in various other shops. Get out there now and look people!

That\'s some bad news if true..

some of my friends are going to wait until the price drops and buy one then... But if it\'s going to RISE UP?

I think not here in the Finland anyway... we\'ve got taxes, right. Now feel the pain to lose as much money as WE did when WE bought OUR PS2!!!

BHOAWHAWHAW... sorry for you I am not...

My friend, who is an employee at EB said that it cost Sony aroud $485 to produce each console. If this is true. They are losing a sh...CRAP load of money. If this is the reason for a price rise, maybe its needed. But who can trust my friend anyway. He\'s cool though. Seems to know his stuff.

Good thing I got mine eh?

Anyways, 2.2% is nothing, it might up the price to $310(I don\'t wanna do the math) or something. Besides, I hate to burst your bubble but the pieces used in the production of everything, not just the PS2, is alot cheaper than it is for you. The PS2 probably takes about $50 to make.

Is that a joke or sarcasm? It takes a lot more then $50 to make it. That is the cost it takes to make the n64 right now and it is 5 years old.

I agree with solid snake. Mass produced electronics are very cheap.

When they say that Sony are making a loss its probly because they are counting the whole package, eg development costs, testing, shipping, tax and the individual pieces, also many more costs i can\'t think of right now.
