Title: Can PS2 do bump mapping?
Post by: on January 08, 2001, 01:47:58 PM
First off, I love my PS2, i.e. I\'m not an X-BOX troller.... and this isn\'t a console debate topic :)

I noticed that one of the things that made the textures in MALICE on X-Box look so real was the use of bump mapping.  Can the PS2 do bump mapping?

I think so but I\'m not sure, it must, I mean look how good the graphics are for MGS2, they are amazing

The quality of the textures in MGS2 is excellent, but to me they all look like flat textures, no relief (bumps) in them.  I\'m going to go have another look though.

I do not believe the PS2 has the ability to do bump-mapping in hardware (I could be wrong though).  oF course it does have enough horsepower (the EE is a friggin beast of a CPU) to do it in software if the code was written efficiently.

>>> I stand corrected...I was just reviewing Sony\'s original spec sheet release and it states that the GS has Bump Mapping built into it! <<<

Hey, not sure if anyone cares but I found out a few cool things on bumpmapping.  We had a little talk with a guy from Nvidia and he siad that basicaly bump-mapping was little more than a hack who\'s time had passed.  He said a lot of other stuff on the issue but it really doesn\'t belong on this board.

Ratboy.  There was no bumpmapping on Malice. That is the "Per-Pixel everything" in action (which is why bumpmapping is finished before it ever started).

Well Matrox has the best bump mapping support around with their enviromental bump mapping.nVidia came with a similar technoligy dot matrix something I can\'t remember what it was called. But now they are concentrading in their per pixel lighting and shading resturizer technoligies.
And the info on Sony\'s GS isn\'t complete so Sony might still have something up it\'s sleve. And Sony didn\'t relise a big code library on their SDK for developers to work with so they had to come up with their own way of storing textures which is inferior to they way Sony and Toshiba intended it to be used.Wait for the next generation games and we should see better textures and bump mapping.
And it should be pointed out that the Ps.2 has superior T&L than the GF.2 and perhaps the X-Box

Jaggies, could you post a link for where you got the info about the PS2?

Thanks

I dunno this have bump mapping as a feature in the PS2.

If the PS2 does have bump mapping then we will probably see it in Naughty Dog\'s game
