Title: GT3 Playable Demo
Post by: Dolbytone on January 09, 2001, 10:11:06 AM
That\'s right, it\'s been in stores about a week now according to what the dude at Software Etc. said (that\'s how long they\'ve had it).  So, if you haven\'t gone to see it in person I highly recommend doing so.

The stuff I saw:

Tracks Mentioned:
Apricot Hill
Deep Forest
Grand Valley Speedway
Montecarlo (this could have been a car not a track I guess)
Laguna Seca Speedway
Rome Circuit
Seattle Street
SS Route 11 (sweet!)
SS Route 5 (either that or Clubman it was hard to catch)
Trial Mountain

These are the tracks I saw flashing by during the title and menu screens.  The only track you could play was Trial Mountain.

Demo Cars:
Honda S2000
Mustang SVT Cobra R
Raybrig NSX

This is the choice of cars you can use to play the demo.

Comments:
The lighting effects that everyone complains about being too unrealistic in the screens we\'ve all seen are very much more subtle when watching the game in motion and playing it so y\'all can shut up about that now.  The backgrounds and environments are killer too.  I don\'t see how anyone can complain about.  The trees look like trees and the buildings in the city tracks look better than ever before.  I don\'t know how anyone will be able to go back to GT or GT2 after playing this game.

Control is much more difficult than the previous GT games as well.  This might be in part due to the difference between a PS2 Dual Shock and a PS Dual Shock, I don\'t know but it seemed that the slightest movement of the stick changed direction of your car while on GT and GT2 you have to go about half way over to make small corrections and adjustments.  Also, the cars seem to have much more momentum causing them to push through turns more easily (I drove the NSX and the S2000).  I guess this means that it would benefeit everyone to learn how to keep their racing lines tight and carefully control speed through the turns.

All in all I was pretty much blown away.  Of course you should know that I hold all GT games in high regard, but Gran Turismo 3 is definitely the closest thing to a racing simulator I\'ve ever seen in my life.

Go play this demo if at all possible and the moment you hear that Motley Crue song "Kickstart My Heart" and see the game run your jaw will hit the floor and there will be a tear fighting to drop from your eye.

Edit: Originally named the wrong store, changed from EB to Software Etc.

Thanks for the news :)

I hope the demo is here too... but not sure \'tho...

Hmmm... Just I\'d like to get own demo-disk...

To play the GT3... WOW...

was it worth the hype, if judging from the demo, Dolby?

I sure hope some mag could include this demo on a coverdisc. But maybe it\'s just a special demo they give to retailers... bah! I\'ll never see one here in our stupid little town at least. Off to Helsinki for me :)

Sounds good...

sweeeeettttt.... i wanna play this game... please. I´ve a question: the intro movie of GT2 is footage of the real gameplay of GT3??? please reply ;)

That\'s a great question!

I just loaded up GT2 and watched the intro movie and while they definitely look similar, there are some differences.  I think the GT3 gameplay looks better than the GT2 intro.  This is for a couple of reasons, the first being that the lighting effects are much more subtle and realistic on GT3 than the GT2 intro.  You\'ll notice that in GT2 the light source always seems to be a little higher and just to the left of the camera.  That\'s not the case with GT3, it\'s always coming from the same place regardless of where the camera moves to within the shot.  The second being that you can tell there\'s more screen information on the GT3 demo making everything look much more smooth.  Regardless of how good the GT2 intro looks, there are still some visible jagged edges here and there.  I don\'t recall seeing those in the demo... definitely not in the replays anyway.

GT3 looks most like the GT2 intro in a couple spots, the first being where the screen goes to color and there\'s a "swoosh" sound after they flash the track names at you.  There are a lot of shots in the intro with the same color tones and the shots of Laguna Seca, Trial Mountain and Seattle are very close to what GT3 gameplay looks like.

And yes, Darth Joyda, I was very excited while playing.  I think there was a puddle of drool on the floor when I left.  It just seemed so much more real than the previous GT games.  The cars looked and felt like they had real mass.

BTW: Those things they say about the NPC car\'s AI when you pass them is true.  I bumped into a couple of them trying to sneak underneath their lines in some of the turns and they came back and beat the **** out of me.  They\'d rub my back end so I couldn\'t track around turns trying to get away from them, then schooled me in the next bend... those bastards!  I felt like I was racing against other people.  It was awesome.

I\'m sorry to wake you from yer dream, but it definitely isn\'t, cause when that intro was made, the people at polyphony hadn\'t even made the gt3 engine, and even if they did, they did not have a dev kit

Let\'s please not post a bunch of pictures in this thread, I hate that, besides those pics look like crap.  I\'d be more than happy to follow a link if you want to leave one but I think we\'ve all seen just about every GT(x) screen out there.

Also keep in mind that I only played a DEMO of GT3.  To put things in perspective on how different (worse) the demo can look from the actual game, just load up the GT demos that were on some of the earlier OPM demo disks (#15 for GT and #27 for GT2) and run through them.

I hate that store

\'Cause I don\'t have one of them new-fangled Kazillion bps fat pipe internet connections like mm and it takes threads with a lot of pics an unbearable amount of time to load if it loads at all depending on how many pics are posted (not to mention duplicates of pics that are posted in quotes WTF?) so please for my sanity\'s sake just leave a link if you want to show us pics... at least for this thread anyway.  I wanted to have a feedback thread for people who\'ve played the demo, not another graphics scrutinization (...the white zone is for loading and unloading...) thread.

I\'d really appreciate it.

You know what?
I\'ll be a nice person and delete the pics, but only in this thread,  I can\'t guarantee you that I\'ll never post pics again in other threads,

Wow the game sounds incredible I\'ll definately have to make a trip to my local EB to check it out. It\'s possible that the \'Montecarlo\' Dolbytone saw mentioned was the rumoured Monaco course in GT3!

I played the demo.

The graphics didn\'t live up to my expecations but the gameplay did.
Title: Question for VP and Dolbytone
Post by: Lavan on January 09, 2001, 07:19:25 PM
Is the GT3 demo on the same initial PS2 demo unit - with the crappy LCD flatscreen?

I really hate that thing, I don\'t know why Sony didn\'t package in a proper TV like the DC demo unit, the difference between Madden 2001 on a regular TV with Component Input and that demo screen is like night and day.
Title: GT3 Playable Demo
Post by: VP on January 09, 2001, 09:12:06 PM
Yep, LCD.  From what I saw I\'ve seen racers that look 10x better.  Hopefully it was the screen.

Post by: Dolbytone on January 09, 2001, 10:14:01 PM

Yup, LCD screen... and sorry about that no demo stuff for you guys up on Oregon.  I live in South Carolina so I figured it would have hit the bigger markets at least, sounds like somebody dropped the ball.

Dolbytone I\'m suprised you didn\'t mention the image quality.  The graphics looked terrible IMO.  You didn\'t notice the warping textures and the "crawling" effect in the BG\'s?

BTW, you are in So. Cali?  Where did you play it?
Title: GT3 Playable Demo
Post by: Dolbytone on January 09, 2001, 10:35:04 PM

VP, I live in South Carolina, not So Cal. so we\'re quite a ways apart.  Like I said, I played it at the Software Etc. at the mall.

As far as the graphics quality you mentioned, you have to remember how LCDs look compared to other screens, and in the kind of light a store generally tends to have.  I use a laptop most of the time so I\'m used to it... I didn\'t see any warping textures and the "crawling" effect in the BGs.  Maybe it\'s because I just worship GT, but I also know how this game will look on my TV from seeing it on the screen at the store.  I\'ve played NHL 2001 in both places and it always looks better at home.

Plus, like I pointed out before, this is a demo and there are almost always enhancements made to the final release of a game after a running demo is released.  Think about it, this game doesn\'t hit shelves for two months yet.

Its the LCD screen.....dunno why they don\'t use regular TVs(WEGA?). Anyway the same happens with other games....

Dolby, I live in South Carolina too. Charleston here...what city you live in?

WoW... if it plays and looks like the GT2 demo then I will just... Hmmm... wet my pants really :)

So some of the rumors of PS2 being able to bring us FMV-quality graphics are true, more or less so :)

thanks Dolbytone for the news... :D I have no possibilities to play the game before it is released here, and I\'m not sure will it happen on march... Finland seems to get all the games little late..

and think if there is enchancements being made to the demo... well, not graphical but they could be something else too...

hmmm... did you see any graphical errors or bugs in the demo, THX? I\'m asking this just to shut the PS2-bashers up... if someone\'s going to flame the game of being buggy...

yea i noticed the same thing when i played madden on my tv and the lcd at babbages - it is like night and day

Wish they had the demo there already - i would almost live in that store.

Joyda... you\'re confusing Dolbytone and THX now... :)

Damn you got me all jittery, can\'t wait for this one. And of freakin\' course it\'s out in May! Every damn game is out in may! I calculated with m\' buddy \'ere that there are approximately 15 must haves coming out within a very short timespan. Ouch.

lol... well that happens I guess.  Lots of people confuse THX and Dolby these days, besides from the news I got today it looks like by the end of the year I\'ll be a THX certified sound tech... that\'s right, I\'m being sent to THX school folks!

IvoryGrail, (you\'re the one in Charleston right?) I live about 120 miles away from you in Sumter.
