SONY plans to release a 2-in 1 package (HDD and 56K modem) for the PS2 in 2-3 months. It will be priced around $150.
Untill sony get a broadband network up they are going to release the 56k version beacuse obviously not everybody has BB. This is where the sega stuff comes in, as you may have heard sega is working with sony with the online network... you know the rest.
This is speculation on my part, but it would make sense that you could "take out" the 56k modem and "replace" it with a ethernet drive.
This is for the
USA ONLY!
this is not the japan plan.. its only BB there :)
Rembember this is a rumor, but makes perfect sense :)

Sega working with Sony on their online network? News to me...
How big is the HDD?

How big is the HDD?
Yes, sega and sony were in talks...
That was annouced
but obviously nothing has been annouced from it cause of.. march.. the big ps2 month.
I hear the size is 8 to 10 gigs
Sony is looking for the best price
-
Thats pretty interesting...
Anyways, what all will the HDD be used for? New levels? Game Saves?
Man... its been a while since i\'ve been here. Nice to see everyone again.

Yep, both
good news is, not patches for fixes, beacuse not everybody has a hardrive.
It should be great :)
with support though sega, (this could mean PSO on ps2 in 3 months)
Sony can get a 56k network up soon, almost for march
then get a Broadband network up for fall.
Another advantage for the ps2, all people can play
I talk to many people over 56k still that can\'t get broadband, now everyone can play :)
-
I heard the HDD is coming with a Broadband modem.
-
Yes,
it will
but not at first
This makes sense to me,
but i\'m still not sure what sony wants to do with BB, there is still alot to learn
-

quite possible, but not in 2 to 3 mouths, the psx2 is a pain to program for, i would say maybe in 8-9 mouths.
But it\'s interesting if sega does indeed do this they are in
a way taking the same approuch as square is with there multiplatform online rpg strategy. think about it PSO on XBOX, GC, DC, and of course psx2. CAN you say chich-ching$$$$$$$$$$$$
-
Only 8-10 gig ? I heard the drive was double figures like 20 - 30 gig
-
Very interesting indeed Chrono... do you know anything about the European release-rumours? I mean.. if it\'s usa only then it doesn\'t consider me much :)
I\'m really waiting for the BB, but it\'s still a year away. When it comes out then we don\'t have to think about slowdowns or "lag"; everything will go like a greased sausage then :)
releasing a 56k modem now could be a smart move ouf from Sony because it would introduce Sony-fans to the internet via Ps2, and with the hard drive it\'s very good idea! But I think when BB comes out you can change the hard-drive for even bigger ( thinking of about 50 gigs ). 8-10 gigs of Hard-Drive space is easily enough for 56k connection, but with BB you can download gigs a day if you want to...
interesting indeed.
-
can anybody explain me the difference between a normal 56k modem and a broadband?? What speed reachs the broadband adaptor?
-
about 50 x\'s faster or more.
I don\'t know why anyone would want to play games at 56k. Unless you are playing checkers, or spades, it\'s just too damn slow. I realize not much gets relayed back and forth, but even playing games like Starcraft with people with 56k modems is annoying.
I say screw the losers without DSL/Cable.
hehe, can you tell I have DSL?
I do hope though that if they do go the 56k route, and they should don\'t get me wrong, that they split the play up and don\'t intermingle the 56kers with the broadbanders. I don\'t want a 56ker drinking out of my waterfountain and sitting on the front of my bus.
OK, I\'m off on a tangent.
About the HDD... I have read in numerous places that it was going to be in the teens as far as gigs. That seems realistic. I don\'t see any need to go over 20 gigs. Hell I only have 6 gigs on my computer here and I only use a few. Although CD-R sure comes in handy.
Smell you later....
-
the hard drive is going to be in the tens of gigs, that\'s what a guy from sony (can\'t remember his name, and I don\'t now were I got that information from, since I read it like 2 weeks ago) stated.
-
Oh well, some online is better than no online...
-
ok Videoholic thank you very much for explain me that. 50x?? wow the rate must be great, 500kb/s?
-
I have dsl modem and things are way faster than they used to be... so I can\'t agree on that screw-thingy there :)
well, of course I\'d like a 100meg/s broadband but ah well, that\'s only dreaming... this is reality and I\'m fine with it :)
-
well the hdd is being made by the same people who are making the hdd is the xbox. the xbox\'s hdd is 8 gig so i reckon the ps2 is gonna be the same.
I am using 56k at the moment and i played counter-strike for ages using it. the ping was fine until my computer got really slow. i reckon the gamespeed will be fine. look at the dreamcast.

This was sonys weakest point...this sucks ass most ppl can\'t afford to buy ps2 with accessories then buy a online addon. This will screw a lot of ppl. I have 700 dollars saved for another console but I won\'t say the name..ends with X. I think they should give up the 56k cause it sucks and the price of cable modem is going down..I hate waiting to play online with dc too much waiting. I love cable though it ten times faster!!!!!!!!!

that\'s just bull****, I personnaly don\'t think it\'s stupid, cause this way people that care about online playing can buy te thing and the people who don\'t won\'t have to pay for the thing when they buy their ps2.

If you colm down and think maybe you will be ok. It does matter if you will be able to down load hidden characters, modes and levels...ect And I never said it was stupid.

XBOX
I hope you don\'t comit suicide when you find out the price of your x-box... i\'m hearing from several places 450 to 550 dollars...
Concerning hardrive price, how much do you wanna pay?
I am assuming there will be more then one version 10 gig, 20 gig, etc. I for one would buy a 20 gig, but not everybody loves games as much as I do, some may only want a 10. Choice is something that sony has given us, lets hope they make this add-on a success.
I also hear rumors that with a 2 year subscription to Final Fantasy 11, you will get a free hardrive and ethernet modem!

Considering the HUGE MINORITY of people in the US actually have access to broadband, you have to consider the "little people" who are oh so unfortunate to live where they live. It\'s unfair to single them out becuse of a flaw in their cable company\\phone company. However, they do have satelite dishes, but that\'s all heresay when the ground broadband is the choice of most as well as the cheapest. People on 56k may lag out or freeze in-game more often then BB people, but they deserve the right to at least game with us, no matter their preference\\or what they can afford. I\'d be happy to kill any lagger in Outtrigger or burn any lagger in Wipeout. That\'s just my opinion though, one of the casual DSL user :)

I agree does make sense, but if you want cable modem you can easily get it. Only 20$ a month hear. After you use faster service you never want 56k again. But seeing how every ain\'t go it I guess you do need one I just hate all that freezing and lag time.
