Title: Does the PS2 live up to your expectations?
Post by: Bossieman on February 06, 2001, 11:45:10 AM
I would say both yes and no. First I was very impressed with the tech demo and the yabasic. The cool design and the fact that I owned one of the most wanted piece of hardware in the world.stod in line for 13 hours to get it. Then SSX, very nice, better than I thougt it would be.
But some things was not to good. First of all the damn DVD!
No RGB for us in Europe. And the noise when playing games and DVDs. Not good at all. And the lack of next gen games isnt funny either. I know they will come, but I dont want to wait anymore.

My PS2 is broken and I\'m not having much luck getting it fixed.  I don\'t know if mine ever performed properly so take my answer w/a grain of salt, but to answer your question...NO

From what I ve seen and playied its a YES and a big one too.Same is for every other PS2 owner in Cyprus. They are thrilled and excited.
When they talk to me about their PS2 they sound like the happiest people on earth.
I am not saying these to start a PS2 propaganda. Its the truth. But this could also be because of the smaller society in my Country. Its small.
Probably thats why they get excited with it so much.
But this excitement never existed about any other console.

These reactions could be different outside Cyprus

Dammit! Who said, "Not even close" ? I was gonna use that! Damn you!

Well,my answer is NO. I think there are no real killer games for PS2. There is not one PS2 game that I have been able to play without getting extremely bored within 10-40 minutes. And yes,I\'ve played the "good" ones.SSX,DOA2, TTT,TS( ok, TS got me going for a little over an hour once) and some others.

No. Despite lowering my expectations repeatedly leading up to the launch, I was still expecting something more. Like 1 or 2 games (barely) looked better than DC games, and of the rest, half were near DC level, and half wouldve been ****ty even on DC. I expected a bit more graphics wise than I got for a system supposedly 10x as powerful. Gameplay wise I knew what I was in for...

No. Not even near it. I\'ve got 7 games for the damn thing and I never play it. That is not to say I won\'t be impressed come MARCH. By, with the current line up, I am not impressed in the least bit.

Same here, I\'ve rented just about all of the games and not many impressed at all. I stopped playing most after about 20 min.

Unknown,

I expected alot since I\'ve only played the DC a couple of times and I\'ve been playing the ps1(not the DC,not the nintendo64). So yes, I expected a lot more out of a machine that is supposed to be so powerful.

At its launch there was no game on the DC looking as good as TTT or RRV or Timesplitters.(Still no game as good as TTT and timesplitters). And then the phenomenal SSX came.

We are not talking about its launch only.We are talking  about PS2 until now.And we can see the future line up.Thats  what makes atleast my expectations higher and higher.
You can see some of the best games ever both graphically and gameplay wise being ready for the PS2.

Unicron, the difference from the PS2 launch and the DC launch is that the DC had more excellent games, IMO.

Hydro Thunder (Average)
Toy Commander (Average)
Marvel Vs. Capcom
PowerStone
Virtua Fighter 3tb
House of the Dead 2

PS2

Madden 2001
Timesplitters
SSX
RRV
Tekken Tag Tournament
The Summoner (Average)
Unreal Tournament (Average)

Hmm... it\'s pretty much even then. :p

Is DOA2 any good? I played the DC version and it had a very LOW replay value.

Well, RR5\'s graphics were horrible, Hydro Thunder looked and played as good. Timesplitters, aight, I agree, a damn fine launch game. TTT might look a *little* better in the US &UK than Soul Calibur did, but Soul Calibur was a better game IMO. Since the systems \'10x\' as powerful and came out a year later, thats still pretty pathetic.

SoulReaver, whether or not you like DOA2 is really a question of whether you like fighting games or not.  People debate over which is the best TTT or DOA2.  I say DOA2 but either way those 2 are 2 of the best.

This is my favorite fighter and I usually play it more than the others, even Madden.  It\'s got a good Survival and Tag Mode.  I like it\'s TagMode better than TTT.

If you have 2 players, or more, it never gets old.

Well its still extremly early in the life of a console, But things are looking up with games coming out soon.

Onimusha falls into this category as does ZOE

but up to now of course the promise has not been met

I\'m not saying that ps2 is bad or anything, (keck, its on of the best) but it doesn\'t live up to the hype caused by the media (it would have been impossible to meet this ammount of hype)

I hope this will all change when the second generation of games arrives

Well I\'m sure SOny will have a solid offering of great and good titles, but its obvious that there will be a pile of **** to go with it. With so many developers signed on to develop PS2 games its unavoidable, not all of them are going to be able to cut the mustard

agreed, its like with psx

there are so many games out that 75% is ****, but with every pile of ****ty games there come some gems worth picking up

I\'m sure it will happen to ps2 eventually, so many games have been announced, I\'m looking foward to MGS2, ZOE, Onimusha, Devil May Cry, GT3 and all of namco\'s fighting/racing games

When I first bought the thing a week after the original launch I was impressed, mainly because Madden and SSX were so good.  Now, not really.  I haven\'t used it in a week.  The reason?  No game has come out since then that is worth buying.  Hopefully after March my opinion will change.  That\'s if they don\'t move the release dates back even more.

Rayman Revolution is the most impressive PS2-game so far!!!

I mean. I forgot. That\'s the game I\'ve been playing ( for approx. 15 hours now :) ) for most, and of course timesplitters is always good with friends ( I\'ve played it for 1 day and 5 hours; 29 hours now that is :) )...

So, I was impressed by Rayman Revolution. It reveals a bit of the true power behind PS2, and it has beautiful levels and very good music along good playability.

Only thing that bothers me is sometimes bad camera-angles, but overally the game\'s an experience not to miss by PS2-gamer...

No, but games like Timesplitters and SSX are examples of how much fun you can have on your PS2. IMO, after these titles there\'s really nothing else worth playing and to tell you the truth I\'m really getting tired of it. All I got to say is that this wait better damn well be worth it!

Yes? No? Er, not quite. There hasn\'t yet been one ground breaking game that manages to run chills down your spine for the sheer brilliance of it. But I\'ve had bucketloads of fun though.

Next stop : March. Till then I\'ll be happy playing with my brand spanking new N64 :D

A lot of the systems are defective.

Certainly lives up to my expectations. The graphics are, in fact, even better than I expected. I have been nothing less than impressed with the PS2, even though I still don\'t own one. There\'s none here where I live. All PS2games that I have seen in action have been sweet graphics-wise, especially SSX, which totally blew me away. And when it comes to jaggies, well, I don\'t see em, so I don\'t care. The only letdown is the lack of very good games, as I had already gotten the impression that there\'d be tons of brilliant buyingworthy games from the day of the launch. But I don\'t care cause I couldn\'t buy them anyway.

I for one wasn\'t impressed with the launch either, I also have dreamcast and he graphic level of the dreamcast is similar to the launch games, I was a bit disapointed with the graphics of the launch games, but looking at the games that are coming in march, I know  It\'ll live up to my expectations.
ps. gameplaywise only timesplitters really gave me something to talk about (yet), but then again, on the dreamcast I have ten games, and for some reason they all (except for soul calibur) seem to be somehow incomplete, I dont know how to explain this, maybe the lack of a good controller and a lot of buttons, but they always seem to lack something, for instance le mans, I like it, in fact I\'m playing it most right now ( I\'m always finished with the 24 hours race, damn the rain constantly poors down, very depressing), but although you can tune your car, you can only do it a bit, and although there are more tracks, they\'re all a bit the same.
did anyone get my point?

Like I said, I\'m not impressed, but I don\'t expect to be. I admit, when I first got it , I expected to be. I was impressed with the DC at first. But then I realized something. The DC was the first jump from 32 to 128. That was a big jump. The PS2 was second to come, so natrually it wouldn\'t impress me as much as the first time. And then I thought about the developing problems at first, and realized that it is just going to take the PS2 alittle more time before it really impresses it. I expect that will come in March.

now now, hitting things is a little unneccesary, don\'t let a game get you angry!  j/k

Anyway, I would say yes, Sony is a reliable company(aside from the shortage that they couldn\'t help) and a PS2 is definatly a good buy.  Works as a CD and DVD player as well.   Infact my next project will be hooking up my PS2 to a sound system.

Does the PS2 live up to my expectations... Well it definetly didnt.  I prefer playing my DC or N64 way more than my PS2.  My little brothers dont even play it.  None of my friends like it either.  I personally am questioning the 300 dollar investment I made and the 6 hour travel time I spent to go get it.  The fact that I have a very desired piece of equipment that most everyone wanted was sweet... but now I think I would warn everyone not to get one or atleast wait a few more months or whenever some of the newer games come out like MGS2 and GT3 come out here in the US.  SSX and Madden were teh only games that impressed me even slightly.  I do like the DVD abilities and the graphics are very nice  I cant wait till Xbox... maybe it wont suck.

well I have to give my sympathies to the person who bought a broken ps2. That really sucks.

Anywho My ps2 has definitely performed up to my expectations. Although I\'ve yet to see any really superb games for the ps2. But what do you expect for first gen games on a new console.

However I CANT WAIT TILL MARCH. ZOE WITH MGS2 DEMO!!! But yah im quite satisfied watching my dvds on my ps2. So my answer to the original question is

OH HELL YEAH!!!!

I am going to reserve all judgements on the PS2 until this fall when I plan to pick one up. Right now I am very excited about it\'s potential and my speculations as to what Sony has up it\'s sleeve concerning their online plan. There are a few games out there that I\'d like, but nothing I can\'t live without.

I guess it all comes down to.. Can the PS2 live up to my expectations? - Yes, and it undoubtably will. Has it lived up to my expectations so far? - No, but it\'s still very early in the game.

PS2 had better lighting, DC had better looking textures. Well, If you dont have a DC, enjoy, but if you do, Rayman 2\'s only $20 brand new...

Well, I think the PS2 version looks a little better but there is no major difference between the two, honestly. I don\'t see why everyone is going around saying "its the first 2nd generation game",that\'s crazy.

Rayman Revolution for the PS2 just has some added levels and a few other gameplay features, its basically a full port of the the DC game using renderware 3

Rayman Revolution is a cool game though, I\'m having more fun with it then I thought i would, and thats really all that counts

Yes, Rayman Revolution is a cool game! And it still is the best game out on PS2 at the time... or that\'s my opinion.

And I recommend it if you don\'t have the previous versions of the game. I think that if you have the DC version already this isn\'t such a must-buy, but worth a check still. The visuals are VERY nice...

In a word : YES. Even if there are not so many good games out now, even if most awaited games are delayed...

SSX and Timeplitters are both terrific games, with terrific
graphics, it\'s damn fast and beautiful...

I\'m no doubt playing on a next gen system
(I dont have any DC, so for me the improvement was huge...)

Uhh I didn\'t expect much...I think the ps2 has been average so far..nothing made me say ohh while whoooa
awesome dude yet but I still play TTT all the time and doa2:D And with all the media hype it was kinda bland after you played it for a while, but i think if something is hyped that much 9 times out of 10 it won\'t live up to it. But when more games come out it will be a lot better.

ps. gameplaywise only timesplitters really gave me something to talk about (yet), but then again, on the dreamcast I have ten games, and for some reason they all (except for soul calibur) seem to be somehow incomplete, I dont know how to explain this, maybe the lack of a good controller and a lot of buttons, but they always seem to lack something, for instance le mans, I like it, in fact I\'m playing it most right now ( I\'m always finished with the 24 hours race, damn the rain constantly poors down, very depressing), but although you can tune your car, you can only do it a bit, and although there are more tracks, they\'re all a bit the same.
did anyone get my point?

hey, you got a dreamcast?? cool, where did u buy it
and why doesn\'t bart smit sell dreamcasts??

I was looking for them, but no shop in holland seems to sell them [/B]

try it on http://www.dimensionplus.nl
it\'s not were I bought it (I bought it at free record shop), but I think they will have some in store

Well to be honest you can\'t expect something as new and complicated as the PS2 to come out of the gates firing on all cylinders, there is always a learning curvve.

Sony never said the revolution would happen on day 1 althoughwe did get some cool fun games.

The fact that there are some really great titles coming out in the near future tells me the PS2 will live up to the hype, and its still incredibly early in the PS2\'s life.

"Sony never said the revolution would happen on day 1" - ddaryl

Sony also never said that the reveloution they promised would come though graphics. It may have sounded like that, and they did hype up the graphical capabilities.. but they only said the PS2 would be a reveloutionary mass market device.

Think VRML, not HTML. :D
