The degree to which Sony\'s PlayStation 3 will out-perform its predecessor became clearer yesterday when the developer of the console\'s graphics chip mapped out its internals.
Speaking at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference, held this week in San Francisco, the designer of the Graphics Synthesiser (GS), Simplex Solutions, unveiled a .18 micron chip almost twice the physical size of the .25 micron PlayStation 2 version (21.3mm x 21.7mm, compared to just 16.8mm x 16.88mm).
The PlayStation 3 GS will feature 256Mb of on-die DRAM. The current implementation has just 32Mb of embedded memory. \'GS 3\' will be capable of handling 75 million polygons per second with a fill rate of 1.2-2.6 billion pixels per second. Its 2Kb internal bus provides a bandwidth of 48GBps.
According to EE Times, most regular DRAM makers are waiting for .15 micron and smaller process technologies before releasing 256Mb chips. In that respect, Sony and Simplex Solutions\' used of 256Mb embedded DRAM is well ahead of the curve.
Presenting the chip, Simplex Solutions VP Aurangzeb Khan said that yields of the GS 3 (our name, not his) were meeting Sony\'s expectations. That suggests it may be not too far off full-scale shipment. The PlayStation 3 isn\'t expected until next year at the earliest, though with Xbox due to ship late 2001, Sony may be keen to hasten the release of the follow-up to the PlayStation 2, whether it\'s a full revamp of the console or simply an upgrade.
Khan would not say whether the GS 3 would be used in a successor to the PlayStation 2. The second version of the PlayStation 2\'s central processor, the Emotion Engine, is due to appear next year, according to Sony\'s roadmap.

PS2 would be quite useless if that\'d be true, so I doubt it. Why release PS2 if PS3 is so close at hand, and so much more powerful?
why havent all the game-companies left this too early born child, PS2, to meet its death, PS3? :)
I mean... that\'s interesting, but fights against the forms of logic.

Who is stupid enough to believe a PS3 in 2002?Do you know how long it takes to build and develop a console?Its atleast 4 years of work and the PS3 probably didn\'t start physical development untill like last year after the PS2 launched in Japan.

if Sony were to release the PS3 next year they would fail so bad it\'s not even funny, all those people who went out and bought a PS2 to have the best now find out that a bigger better one is coming out only a year later, believe you me, Sony is not that stupid, and there is no way PS3 is coming out any sonner then 3 years from this day

the PS2 and GC are way ahead of the pathetic xflop.....only 33million transistors in the xbox gpu? lol....sony beats that with 47million and nintendo kills it with 52million...8 layer effects in one pass on gc..only 4 on xbox....
look at the fillrate of the xbox...it\'s atleast 2 years behind...while ps2 was ahead at the time it was done..
why on earth do people call the xbox the "new" thing? or "new technology"?....lol

I can\'t believe the amount of people who takes a Sony R+D announcement out of context. Sony was R+D\'ing the PS2 soon after the PSX and they announced it at about the same time in the PSX\'s life,

Its very commonly known in the Videogame industry that after the console maker finish there current console and release it they immediately start work on its sucessor.You can bet your buck Nintendo,Sony and Sega was devloping the NGC,PS2 and DC right after the N64,PSX and Saturn launched.Sony already said several times the PS3 is in development as we speak in Japan in Sony\'s R&D department and probably been in development for atleast a year.

Bah!Sony doesnt need PS3.Sony is already doing extremely well with PS2.Sells like hotcakes,Future revolutionary games,there is a plenty of room for improvements,and already some cool games.

It won\'t happen, its that simple. That would cause Sony to lose their fanbase and money beyond belief. They couldn\'t even repair themselves from such a blow. No company is that stupid.
And its common knowledge they and every other company start working on future consoles soon as they get one out the door. That is how the industry works. Infact, I\'ll go as far as to say, that those "specs" will change before the ACTUAL release date of the PS3.

PlayStation 3 rumors have been flying around since the PS2 was revealed two years ago, and one of the biggest culprits is Ken Kutaragi, big cheese at Sony and grandaddy of the PlayStation console. At a press event, Kutaragi made some big promises for the PS3, and, although we\'ve heard them all before, hyping the phantom supersystem once more won\'t hurt.
The current plan looks like this: Sony will complete the guts of a new system in 2002, which will be 100 times more powerful than the PlayStation 2. Sound good so far? Well, this chipset won\'t actually be used on the PS3; Sony will develop even more new chips to be used in the PS3. The Emotion Engine3 and the Graphics Synthesizer3 will be 1,000 (count \'em) times more powerful than our precious PS2, and the graphics this system generates should be nothing short of film-quality!!! :D:D:D
Don\'t worry...PS2 will dominate for the next 5 years:D:)

That PS3 thing might be the HDD drive. Everybody said it brings a hell lot more power to the PS2 and yet here they are just disguising the name. I heard somewhere that the PS2 was just the begining of the systems abilitys and then the HDD comes in to make it a whole more powerful! I also heard the HDD drives has more memory and an added chip! making double the power probably is that true but heck lets just pray for it

Um...that ludicrous and stupid. I was watching TV and the creator of the PlayStation was talking about his plans for PS3, and it\'s not due out until 2006. Why the hell, after just releasing the PS2, would they already release a new system. Please shutup. I\'m still excited and enjoying my PlayStation 2 very much. Sony has also been known to release a system every 5-6 years. Not every 3. That would be stupid and wouldn\'t help them at all.

Also, they won\'t be finished with the "guts" of the system until around the release of the PS3. Please don\'t believe things unless they\'re directly from Sony. They\'re working on Graphic WorkStations that will be made for movie productions. The first one is already out and is 10 times the power of the PS2. The second generation one, due out in 2002, will be equipped with the 2nd generation Emotion Engine 2 and Graphics Synthesizer 2, and will be approximately 100 times more powerful than the first Graphics WorkStation. Then, hopefully, buy 2006 (about the time the PS3 will be released), the 3rd generation Emotion Engine 3 and Graphics Synthesizer 3 will be released. Ken Kutaragi (The creator of PlayStation) promises 1000 times the power of PlayStation2. Your welcome for clearing things up. Please stop believing in all of these rumors. It just upsets people and raises blood pressure.

oh god...this is stupid! ps3?? totall BS, Bull**** wehatever that chip from RevX\'s post is just like the currenet GS BUT with 32mb of VRAM, so it wouldn\'t make sense to use that chip in the ps3 (even the xbox is more powerfull than that!!) So no! Ps3 will be launched in 2006 like Ken saiD! ;)
