The Voodoo series or the Geforce series? I saw a really cheap(like $40) Geforce 2 at my local computer part store. Should I get it? And also, do you have to have a 3D accelerator card to run really advanced crap? Or just a good video card? Whats the difference? Ah crap just answer em. plz?
-
I think Geforce. At least at the time. Get Geforce 2 Ultra. It\'s da best.
This is my opinion and I can\'t really technically back you up, so let some tech-geek do that for me, ok? :)
-
The Ge-Force you saw was probly an MX it\'s a downgraded version of the GTS or a regular Ge-Force 256.
You should be able to get a decent GF.2 GTS frm say Creative labs for about 200$.
The ULTRA is not really worth the extra money since it\'s basically just a GTS that\'s been clocked from 200Mhz to 250Mhz.And the memory is at 300 something can\'t remember.
Don\'t get a 3DFX voodoo series card since they\'ve gone under and nVidia bought all of their core assets.
You could also check out ATi\'s Radeon series card they\'re just as good as nVidia\'s.(although ATi\'s drivers suck)
The Ge-Force.2 MX or the GTS would probly be the best for you their both the best in their category and can be found very cheap. And nVidia\'s unified driver strategy is also very nice (same drivers for every card)
You could also wait for about a month because the NV.20 is about to be unvealed.

ok thanks. i really need to get a new video card. mine is like 8 years old. i don\'t have a 3d accelerator either.
-
Can\'t go wrong with Voodoo and I hear real good stuff about Matrox.
-
Voodoo is no longer manufactored and Matrox is aimed at 2d rather than 3d (their 2d image quality is unparalelled) their G400 MAX is a very good card but it\'s getting old and 3d feature wise pretty outdated (wxcept for enviromental bump mapping) if you need very good 2d with extremely crisp colors get a Matrox.
If your a gamer get a Ge-Force and you can consider a Radeon.(but the drivers suck ass)
-
if yer going PCI, the V5 5500 is the best PCI card u can get
as for AGP, ive seen V5\'s for 180, and you cant beat that price
nvidia - speed
3dfx - picture quality
i get 110 FPS timedemo 1280x768x32 2xFSAA with my V5 on Q3, love it
-
Well i got a NVida TNT2 Model 64 on my computer and i think it is great - it really out performs my old one - yea i am glad that i have finally got a new card it is difenitely a good buy - also i would get a card with 3d acceleration - some games are starting to require it to work - like Sacrafice and some other new games.

Not sure what you mean there bud, because Voodoo5000 & 5500 are in stores now. ATI blows, right on! Bought an ALL-IN-WONDER and returned it next day for Voodoo3500.
-
3dfx = dead
no more voodoo cards will be produced. what u see in store is remaining inventory that the retailers dont want to eat. i suggest u pick one up on sale while u still can
-
I have an Elsa Gladiac (gf2 gts) 32mb and it performs extremely well. No complaints, aside from the many driver updates, which aren\'t really that frequent anymore.
In my DV editing machine I run a Matrox Marvel G400. This does some excellent MJPEG vid capping but like n0-0ne said, it excels in 2-D apps with its aging technology. I\'m looking into replacing it with the All-In-Wonder Radeon which does mpeg-2 vid capping.
Like most of the posts here, I recommend a gf2 gts. MX if you want to be thrifty, and a Radeon if you\'re stuck in between.
-
Geforce 2 MX - 150
Geforce 2 GTS - 239 ~ 280
Geforce 2 Ultra - 390 ~ 450
If you can find ANY geforce 2 for $40, you are lucky. I dont even think one exists for $40 that still works, lol.
-
I should get a new 3d card too, I currently have Riva TNT :)
-
the Hercules Prophet II ultra is the best card it uses faster DDR Ram than the regular creative geforce II ultra
BUT IT IS NOT CHEAP!!!!!!!!!
And 3dfx is dead, all their technologies have been sold to nvidia!
-
So will NVidia continue the 3dfx technology or will they just scrap it?
-
OF course there\'s the money.
But if I\'d win in lottery, then I\'d probaply buy that Hercules :)
But what\'d be the best choice for a student with not so much money?
Quality=price. Can you recommend something to me?

They will definetly use 3DFX\'s FSAA technique since it\'s superior to their current one. They are rumored to be using some of they technoligy 3DFX was developing for their next gen chip called Rampage. They won\'t be supporting Glide (it\'s a dead API so it doesn\'t really matter)
-
At the moment Geforce 2 and Radeon are the best hardware, but Ati:s Drivers suck Big time.. so geforce2 is best if u want to buy card now..
Nvidia should release its new hardware "NV-20" at end of this month, so if u have money and don\'t need new card today.. id say wait.
-
O would wait till the end of the month. When the NV20 will be released, the others will will drop in price. The NV20 will be expensive
-
NVIDIA owns 3DFX now...

whoa post number 666...spooky :sconf:
-
Well lets see, hmm, I have about $185 saved up but I need all that to buy games. Of course theres always my parents...
-
Wait till the end of the month when prices will drop.
Get a Ge-Force.2 MX cheap then buy some games.
Ohh and MM what kind of processor do you have?
-
i possess a P3 650e OC\'d to 804
-
I\'m on a P2 533. With a Geforce 32meg DDR card. I get 112 fps with FULL everything and a high rez. :D
-
Tbird 800,256 and a GF.2 GTS getting around 90-100 fps at 1024x768 32 with everything on (2x2 FSAA)
I\'m upgrading my proc to 1,2Ghz probly by the end of the month woohoo.
-
n0-one: Hey! I was thinking about getting a 1.2Ghz TBird very soon myself. I currently have a p3 800eb @ 900 in my gaming machine. Hmmmm, are we brothers?
-
Could be :)
Tbirds are very cheap (265$ for a 1,2Ghz Tbird) and outperform P3\'s and P4\'s in just about everything but Q3A,thanks to the super floating point units in the Tbird (3 to be excact).
If Intel procs come out ahead it\'s because the program has been SSE enhanced and AMD\'s next gen procs will have SSE2 instruction sets and 3DNow instruction sets.
(yes your talking to an AMD whore here ;))
