Thanks to http://ps2k.net for the news[/u][/i]
Following Sega\'s press conference last night in Tokyo which outlined plans to stop manufacturing the Dreamcast and focus on software development for other consoles including the PlayStation 2, SCEI vice president Masatsuka Saeki agreed to comment on their newfound relationship. When asked what he thought of Sega working on the PlayStation 2, Saeki-san said, "We\'ve welcomed them openly, and I think it\'s interesting that we\'ll be working together in the future. The PlayStation 2 format will grow stronger with the cooperation of Sega."
Continuing, Saeki-san commented on Sega\'s plans to translate their back catalog of Sega Saturn software to the PSone: "We\'re excited about their plans to revive classic Sega Saturn titles for the PlayStation. There\'s a need for quality PlayStation software especially in North America and Europe, and their back catalog isn\'t well suited for the PlayStation 2. I think they\'ve made the right choice."
Sega COO Satoshi Kayama hinted at their press conference that Sega is planning to work with Sony on several upcoming network projects, but refused to elaborate. Saeki-san commented, "I can\'t say much about our plans at this stage, but our network development will accelerate with the help of Sega. They\'ve pioneered network gaming on consoles, and we hope to adapt their knowledge to the PlayStation 2."
Lastly, Saeki-san talked about the impact of having Sega onboard for the PlayStation 2: "We\'re pleased to have their support, and their software lineup for the PlayStation 2 will be very strong. I hope the players are equally excited."

This article smells and tastes disgusting. I feel as if SEGA has backstabbed us, in a way. I understand SEGA must do this to bring in revenue, and that this is purely business, but it still does not seem right. Funny how I don\'t mind the fact that they are making XBOX and NGC games as well. Hopefully SEGA working with all next gen consoles this generation will get the company out of debut, and allow them to flourish.
Maybe then in the far future SEGA will come back in the hardware business, but i doubt it.

I never jumped on the Saturn bandwagon (that\'s about the only system I never owned) having been burned by the 32X right about the same time... But I grant that it had a number of good quality games. Nice to see they\'ll be coming to the PSOne.
Sony makes a perfect example of why I respectfully post a reply here. I am in awe at Sony\'s willingness to continue supporting software titles (even ports) to the PSOne...even in the midst of the biggest marketing boon with their PS2. Granted, its nice that the PS2 plays PSX gen games so its a win-win either way for Sony (and me as a PS2 owner...love the *smoothing* feature!!!); but still, the fact is, Sony could have buried the PSOne/X and all current owners of same looking only to invest its time/effort into the PS2, but instead its looking to satisfy all if its system owners, both old and new.
Cool.

why is it that psx2central is the only person that wants the PS2 to go downhill here? Why don\'t you answer that yourself?

PSX2Central...Sometimes it seems as if Sega has backstabbed its supporters time and again. But regardless, the fact of the matter is Sega\'s effort to kill console productions and move on to developing their often EXCELLENT titles to multiple platforms will ultimately prove to be a financial boon for Sega. Its probably the wisest decision they\'ve made in 10 years! And whether they get back into hardware again or not won\'t bother me as much, since Sega\'s new mission statement is to develop their titles for multiple platforms, I\'ll be able to get quality Sega titles that play on *my* brand of machine (whatever that might be now or in the future). Good deal for me...and you...and every gamer...
Thanks,

Its seems to me that Sony and Sega are dealing with this very gracefully. I respect the fact that Sony is going out of thier way to make Sega feel comfortable, and to try and help them from losing even more face in the gaming community. Before this happened, Sony wouldnt really acknowledge Sega\'s innovation, but now they refer to them as the pioneers of online console gaming, and makers of great games.
I think its pretty cool.

The PS2 has been going downhill for quite some time and he didn\'t help it, Sony did. We will see what SEGA can do for Sony that it can\'t do for everyone else. :)
MGS2 and GT3 are the only titles worth even mentioning, the rest is crap. GT3 will be better served on the other
next generation remaining platforms. (Translation for our impaired users: GT3 will never be on any other platform, but there will be a lot better titles than GT3 on other platforms.)
I honestly wouldn\'t be suprised if Deer Hunter came out for the PS2 and it had a higher polygon count than that of the PC version. :) Thats how bad things are right now and its like almost every title is a low class bargin bin title.
If it wasn\'t for SEGA, the PS2 would have gone down in flames, lets see if they can bring quality to this struggling platform.

i have to disagree with you on that, but I\'m not gonna say why, cause I don\'t want to argue

Sony would of not went down in flames. They have enough developer support to keep them alive for along time. But, you cannot deny the fact that Sega becoming a third party developer for Sony, did not give them an extensive boost in quality. Well, wait, that is not fair to say, as we have not seen any of the offerings that Sega will bring to the PS2 game selection. But, more and likely, this move will help Sega and Sony.
I would not put it past Sega to return to the hardware buisness after they gain enough money doing this for a few years. Depending on how well this goes--and it should go great.
Did Sega backstab everyone? No, not quite. There was no way they could of kept the DC alive durin\' these console wars, even with great games. The interest was just not there for Sega and it was going to get worse. So, instead of letting the DC die a slow death--like the N64 (to some degree). Sega just called it quits and made the smartest buisness choice. It isn\'t pretty, as I think everyone (\'cept the most rabid Fanboys) hate to see Sega leave the hardware buisness. But the important thing to remember is, Sega made great games. And they will continue to make great games. Just not on a Sega based console.
But who cares? This gives everyone a chance to play some great Sega classics. Sony fans who would never own a Sega console, will not be able to play VF4. It really is exciting. Just look forward people, not backwards.
-
You guys have to remember too, that Sega has only been a hardware manufacturer for the past 20-15 years of it\'s 70 year existance. They built themselves from the ground up on games, and they will rebuild themselves on games. And that\'s what\'s really important isn\'t it? The games. I would rather see Sega return to their roots and make a killing with their games, than see them stick with the finacial burden of consoles and die a slow death.
Besides, Sega\'s not REALLY dropping out of the hardware market entirely. They\'ve licencened out their DC technology for use in PC cards, settop boxes and the like. If the trend continues, Sega will always have proprietary hardware to play their games on.. it just won\'t be SEGA making it, even though they have their name on it.

Now I\'m not trying to start a flame war, so don\'t come back at me with some smart a$$ comments, but IMO this entire paragraph can be summarized with 4 simple words: "I\'m full of crap"

There is only one game that I want on Sega Saturn for my PS2..... and that was that Dragon Ball Z game, it seems that one was the only one done right.
