It has recently been announced by Square Sound (the division of Square responsible for the sound effects) that Final Fantasy X on the Playstation 2 is to feature full Dolby Digital 5.1 sounds. This is a big step for the games industry, as Dolby Digital sound effects were only previously seen on DVDs.
The current plan is to include Dolby Digital 5.1 only during the game\'s FMV sequences. To experience Dolby Digital at home, you have to own a Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoder and Amplifier (either separate or in one unit), but if you have a decent home cinema setup, you would already have this.

Why only go half way. DTS baby, if your gonna go that way Go DTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No really, DD 5.1 will be nice though. I hope more of the games comming out are in Dolby Digital, Im sick of having a top of the line system and the sound still being pro-logic.

Eh, isn\'t this like one of the oldest news on the game? I read about this in the 20th century already... or very early 21st century... anyways, cool :)

It will be interesting to see how the PS2\'s sound architecture will be able to handle 3-D sound effects. As stated by game sound fx experts such as Factor 5, having a sound processor capable of throwing out 256 2-D voices (or channels) is shot down to 64 when doing full 3-D voices (Dolby Digital). And considering the PS2 has only 48 2-D channels for audio, doing 3-D in all of their sound fx will be one helluva challenge.
