Title: Woman sues Midway for son\'s death. Blames Mortal Kombat.
Post by: Mr. Kennedy on February 14, 2001, 04:03:37 PM
NORWALK, Conn. — A city woman is suing a video game maker after her son allegedly died at the hand of a friend as they imitated a fight scene from the "Mortal Kombat" arcade game.

On Nov. 22, 1997, 13-year-old Noah Wilson died about an hour after a knife wielded by his friend on a South Norwalk sidewalk severed his aorta, according to police reports.

The slain boy\'s mother, Andrea Wilson, filed suit Nov. 22 — the third anniversary of Noah\'s death — against Midway Games Inc., a Chicago-based company that manufactures "Mortal Kombat" for home video games and arcades.

Savvas and Athanasia Ioannidis, owners of the Norwalk Dairy King restaurant where Noah and his friend allegedly played an arcade version of the game, also are named as defendants in the lawsuit.

Savvas Ioannidis said yesterday he had never had a "Mortal Kombat" arcade game in his store and that he believed the youths visited another store before the incident.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in New Haven, claims Midway Games should have attached a more explicit warning label on the game. The suit seeks more than $75,000 in compensatory and punitive damages and attorney\'s fees.

A spokesman for Midway Games did not return a call seeking comment yesterday from The (Stamford) Advocate. Phone calls by The Associated Press went unanswered this morning.

The suit alleges that Noah and his friend were playing the game at a store and were on their way to see the movie "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" shortly before the stabbing occurred.

"Mortal Kombat" is described in the suit as a "realistic, violent and bloody fighter game that rewards its viewers\' \'killer responses.\'" The suit describes how a player "finishes" an opponent by "ripping another\'s heart out" or by "tearing off his opponent\'s head, leaving his spinal cord still dangling."

Wilson\'s friend found a kitchen knife on the sidewalk as he, Wilson and three other friends walked to a nearby cinema, the suit states. Police reports on the incident have described the same scenario.

The friend, "who was still feeling the effects of and was controlled by the Mortal Kombat video, picked up the knife and began wielding it in the direction of Noah Wilson and the other juveniles in simulated action moves from the video game Mortal Kombat," the suit alleges.

Details of a juvenile court case against the alleged attacker are confidential.

Andrea Wilson\'s suit alleges that her son and his friend were "obsessed" by the game, "believing that they could simply hit the replay button and start the \'game\' over with the victims coming back to life, only to be slain again."

Andrea Wilson said she tried to keep the game away from her son by prohibiting "mentally addictive and excessively violent video games such as Mortal Kombat in her home." The suit claims the company circumvented her efforts by making arcade versions of the game available in stores such as Dairy King.

The suit states: "Mortal Kombat was intentionally and/or negligently designed by defendant Midway to addict young viewers to its realistic violence through the use of virtual reality, while convincing these immature viewers that what they observed was only a game and no one would be harmed if these viewers \'played\' out the violent acts they observed, notwithstanding the very real violence portrayed in the video game."

Noah Wilson was a West Rocks Middle School student who had achieved some success as a professional actor and model. He had appeared in a national toy commercial, performed in the "Nutcracker" with the New York City Ballet, and had a featured role in the independent film "Hide and Seek."

Its sad that people like that are allowed to have kids.

Take action with your kids and stop blaming everything but yourselves.

This reminds me of the recent case of the 13 year old boy in Floryda, who imitated a wrestling move and ended up killing a 6 year old girl. The boy was sentenced two weeks ago to life in prison. Unless the Governer commutes the sentence he will spend his life in prison over this. And for what? He is 13 years old. It is his parents job to teach him what is fake and what isn\'t. If you haven\'t taught your kid this by 13, then you are just as guilty.

On a site note, I am more likely to believe that this lady just needed something to blame for bad parenting and blamed videogames. Where as it was never questioned that the boy was imitating a wrestling move in the other case.

Either way, its a sad excuse to push off bad parenting.

13 years old is old enough to know what a knife does.  The kid died because he was stupid and apparently it\'s hereditary, so there\'s natural selection at work here.

Just when you thought it was safe to play video games, ANOTHER company is trying to infiltrate the minds of children and turn them into killing machines.  Damnit if we didn\'t just get rid of the last one!

yea they have the same saying here - no listens though

see i hate it when people are ignorant like that mom - how come all the other kids that played the game were not taken over and controlled by it - i am sure there are more hard core gamers out there than that 13 year old and you don\'t see them picking up knives off the ground and killing their friends

for one the kid should have known better than to play with knives - so i wonder who forgot to tell him that - i guess it was the game who forgot  - yea right

I understand the pain of the Noah\'s mother, but she directs the pain to a wrong destination; she blames Midway for killing her son.

Someone has to be made quilty again; the boy whom really killed Noah didn\'t get anything. I mean, a boy of that age should really know how dangerous it is to swing around with a knife. This could have been more sense-making if the boys would\'ve been 6 year olds. But then again, they shouldn\'t blame Midway; they should\'ve blamed the guy who left the knife on the sidewalk.

This world is dangerous.

Games are always suspected. Oh, I played Doom when I was a kid; now I go and kill ppl rapidly with my father\'s shotgun because I became a maniac! And I get off with it, as the game is being sued, not me! BHOAWHAWHAW...

NEWS just in.....

Kid at the age of 10 shoots his father’s head off. Thinking he was a zombie trying to eat his brains, the father was simply kissing his son goodnight.
The child had been keeping a shotgun in his bed thinking that his father was a zombie, that was tasting his head every night waiting for the right time, When the Childs brain was ripe.
So the child pulled out the father’s shotgun from under the covers and blew his dads head off. The last words his father heard was "die zombie scum".
The mother was standing in the next room, and heard everything that was happening. By the time police arrived it was way to late. “The father’s brains were on the walls, some was even stuck to the ceiling fan.” Said police lieutenant, Michael.
The mother is now sueing Capcom.

Nahhh just joking. :D

well probaly not but it is possible - just not probable i guess

that would suck though - imagine hearing something like that in the next rooma dn not being able to do anything fast enough - that would drive me insane the rest of my life

Doesn\'t anyone find it even a bit odd that the incident occured back in 1997? And it is only now that mommy and daddy took action?

What drove them to do this now... *cough*money*hack*gettingtheresponsibilityofftheirownbacks*cough*
*wheeze*
Sorry.

Yah, I wonder what...

They have always got out of hand. Suing because you spilled hot coffee on you--and it didn\'t have a warning? People are greedy and will sue for anything.

And I wasn\'t saying a 13 year old shouldn\'t know how dangerous things like that are. He should of and probably did. I was just saying its the parents job to raise a kid with some damn common sense. Which apparently, these parents didn\'t do.

yea thats how i see it - we had a big discusion of this in my english class whe they had the columbine incident 2 years ago

people always blame the media or something along that lines so it distracts from the simple fact that i belive there are two things that make a person who they are; A person\'s upbringing and Their constant enviroment/

those two things eefect a person mentally - so to me is the parents falut and the people who antagonized those kids day in and day out - they are the ones that gave them the mind to kill people[talking about Columibne]

Society is really going down the crapper. Parents are letting TV and Videogames raise their children and they get mad when the kid emulates something that they see. People are disgusted by the actions of the Columbine shooters but think Anthony Hopkins VERY graphic cannibalism spree is good entertainment.

A crock of **** !!!!!!

She should blame herself firstly for not supervising them, and also why did she let them go to see Mortal Combat Annaliation, blame the arcade/videostore not putting a stop to this and only letting mature people play those types of games. (in australia in some arcades games like house of the dead have a curtain around the machine so young people cannot play/watch.

Next time I have a friend over and we allwatch Halloween, put on the shapes mask and stab him to death.

Just basically a way for her to cash in !!
