I saw that there was a thread talking about MS new OS. I wanna upgrade mine but I have no clue what I should get. Right now I have Win 98. I use my PC for two things mostly.
1) playing games
2) writing and recording music
What should I get?
Thanks all!

Well for an home user just get ME it\'s basically win98 with some extra features taken from win2000.
-
Stay away from Windows ME. Stick with 98 - Or take the step up to Windows 2000.
Me is the worst os ever !!!!!!!!
-
I would just not upgrade yet.
They are making XP which will be more userfreindly than win2k a good thing for a home user.
-
I would of said go get 2K. But with XP coming out, I say take a wait and see approach. If XP does deliver on MS promise, then you will want to upgrade to that. But, we don\'t know yet.
Just wait and see.
But if you *must* do it now, go update it to 2K.
The most stable version of Windows (home user, at least)--not that, that is a big thing to brag about.:D
-
through the college I go to I can get an ME or a 2000 upgrade for 30 bucks. so I think I have to chose between those two.
-
I hate ME, or do i hate AOL....... i dont know becasue they both are evil.
-
yea aint that the truth - they both keep crashing on me and driving me nuts
anyway from a person that is on ME right now - i say go to 2k - it seems to be the better deal for now and i will probaly upgrade to it as well
but i wanna see how XP fars first

Win98 > WinME
WinME takes up more resources causing a noticeable decrease in performance. This is mainly due to its recovering feature which is really useless to the average computer user. Basically if you know what you are doing and don\'t go around deleting things in the registry you\'ll be fine with 98.
When I was still using Win9x and then upgraded to ME, I un-installed it after 2 days. Win2k is what I recommend.
-
For 30$ ehh.
Get Win2k more stable.
But what kind of comp do you have cuz win2k wants alot of resources.
-
I say save up your cash and buy a new computer with XP already installed.
-
Wel XP won\'t be out quite yet.So if he can get an upgrade for 30 bucks I say go for it.

Thats why I said he should save up and get a new box. ME is trash and 2000 is somewhat of a burden on older systems. Just wait a little while and get a comp that is built with XP already installed.

I have PIII 500mhz 192Ram 30gb hard drive.

Well honestly, it really depends on what your needs are.
Windows 98 is still the gamers choice as it has better memory management (I will get to that in a moment) and overall better gaming performance. The difference can be ranging from 1fps to as many as 20fps pending on what video card/processor you have. This was a strong OS, I kinda hated its look and feel. It crashed all too often also.
WindowsMe is the pick for everything. Gaming, Networking, Internet. This OS is definally more tweakable and hellva lot more stable. ISC (Internet Connection Sharing) is so easy on this OS its a joke. Windows98 wasn\'t acimplishable unless you have some very strong TCP/IP knowledge and or a program to do it for you. Gaming on this is very solid, you probally will be somewhat limited, but I\'m getting 125fps right now in Quake3 as we speak on my V5 5500. Interet is blazin fast also. My favorite pick.
Windows2000 Pro is all networking, period. This OS stinks at gaming as it is slower than Me and 98 combinded. Its memory resources is horrible. Don\'t even think of running this OS unless you hate at LEAST 128MB of PC-133 ram, definally get 256MB of ram. I would not use this if your into heavy gaming or photoshop etc etc.
Windws XP aka \'Wistler\' isn\'t worth it. Its cheesy design, its very high security, and overall betaness, I would definally stray away from this piece of software til its reviewed. This OS doesn\'t look promising.

codemaster: The 2 computer ethernet at my home uses MS ICS on Win98 (both systems). Works perfectly fine, and was extremely easy to set up. When I take my computer back home over breaks (which runs Win2k), the ethernet is still very easy to use and works like a dream. Maybe you were using an old version of MS Internet COnnection Sharing?
I would say ICS is very accomplishable in Win98.
I agree with your ram assesment though. I have 256mb of ram in my Win2k box right now, and I still crave more. I can\'t imagine anything less...
-
Win2k wants atleast 128mb
-
ok then. evrybody give me a final vote-
ME or 2000
WHAT SHOULD I GET!?
-
Me definally

Get Windows 2000.
If you play online games like counter-strike. Dont even look at ME.
-
If you play a LOT of obscure games then get Windows 98 (yeah, not ME). Otherwise get Win2K.

I play a ton of counter strike! Is ME bad for this? Cause if it is I\'m not even going to consider ME. Playing games is what I do the most on my PC.
-
Win 98 is fine for now. Just hold off until XP drops.
-
I have windows me, I used 98 before. was that a stupid thing to?

No. No matter which way you look at it ME is an improvement on 98 is almost every way.
Why are all you people flaming ME so much? Some of the things I\'ve heard some of you say are rediculous. For example someone said: "ME is a complete disaster."
You are putting people off ME. It may not be as stable as 2000 but its faster and has some nice features.
P.S. XP is gonna suck a$$.

It sure is.
Eg. If you fire your weapon or move with lots of other players around your ping will jump up, with your hard drive going crazy.
With Windows 2000 with Service Pack 1 it runs Perfect.
Windows XP I dont know about this OS, though is based on the NT Kernal, it stills has 2 options that causes ME to be a resource hog. Being PCHealth and StateMGR. Even with these 2 taken off it still causes lag/decrease in performance.
If your hardware has all the drivers, by all means I recommend getting Windows 2000.
Damn Microsoft, why havent you accepted me as an offical beta tester
