Sega, Namco and SCEI Team Up For Broadband

The big three to develop network games for new PS2 system. First hardware pics inside.

February 21, 2001

Sega was once Namco\'s rival in the arcades. Sega was once Sony\'s rival in the home. Now, Sega, and Namco and Sony are working together on upcoming broadband technology. This, just two months into the year 2001.
Today\'s new deal was announced by Ken Kutaragi of SCEI, Shukuo Ishikawa of Namco and Tetsu Kayama of Sega. Sega and Namco will make use of a specially equipped broadband PS2 system to distribute content at locations throughout Japan. The new machine, which is based off the PS2 but features more memory and a hard drive among other things, will be accessible from Sega/Namco amusement facilities and in specialty game shops. They will be linked up through a fiber optic network.

The new system seems to pack quite a wallop, as revealed by these specs:
• Hard Drive: 80 Gigabytes
  • Main Memory: 128MBytes
  • Graphics Memory: 16MBytes
  • Networking: 100Base-TX
  • Image Input: High Resolution CCD
  • Image Output: HDTV/SXGA
  •
The High Resolution CCD will allow for images to be captured, although no uses for the device have been announced yet. The base hardware is modified somewhat from the standard retail PS2, even beyond the specs seen above. The Emotion Engine is the same, but the graphics synthesizer is a new, larger beast. Sadly, we don\'t have further details at this point.

Each company will be offering up varying forms of content for use on the system. Sony mentioned the possibility of of downloading videos and making use of e-commerce applications, but we\'re mostly interested in network gaming. Namco and Sega are working on network games for this new system, although specifics have yet to be revealed. Interestingly, Sega\'s Tetsu Kayama mentioned the company\'s net@ experiment, which consisted of a Windows-based set-up quite similar to this in Sega arcades throughout Japan. The resulting piece of software? Hundred Swords, Smilebit\'s Online realtime strategy title that just came out for the Dreamcast in Japan. It should be interesting to see what other ideas emerge from Sega and Namco\'s development teams.

Services through this new system should begin by the end of 2001 and are expected to reach national scale in 2002. The pictures below come from PC Game Watch.

Nope it\'s an addon.
And it probly won\'t be very expensive since it\'s an improved GS aswell Sony can\'t make it to expensive otherwise ppl won\'t buy it.Later it will be included when you buy your PS.2.
And 16 megs of graphics memory this will definetly solve the texture problem.
