IF you have a HT you should know what those are...
IMO they should get together and make the ultimate sound system...name it TDS..True Digital Sound;)
-
ummmmm
-
yeah i know, i\'m bored.:D
-
Than wouldn\'t this constitute as spam?
-
THX is nothing but a set of specifications for a theater set up. Not a sound format.
-
well i guess, THX is what Lucas uses...dts is what spielberg uses...and SDDS belongs to sony...
SDDS sounds very intresting...for instance when a train is coming at you...you will know;)
dts is pretty much just uncompressed sound correct?...who will ever forget when that T-rex in jurassic park screamed? i wont:D
SDDS is not for home use...yet;) what a shame... i hear homes are too small or it\'s too expensive..

nplayer, please stop while yer ahead, ehhe

There\'s Dolby Digital, which is probably the most common thing used in theaters. Of course there\'s also Dolby EX, but that is just an extra center-rear channel.
SDDS-Sony Dynamic Digital Sound which offers a left-center and right-center channel that none of the others offers. However many people find it difficult to maintain in the theater
DTS- Digital Theatre Systems- This is where the soundtrack is kept entirey on a compact disc. The DTS reader follows a timecode on the movie print, thus keeping all the dialog and music in sync.
THX-Was designed by Lucas to form a series of standards that go above and beyond NATO standards. This certification includes what the walls of the theater are made out of, what kind of screens it has, where the speakers are, and what kind of equipment is used. Dolby Digital, SDDS, and DTS are all THX certified as being quality ways to reproduce sound.

I think SDDS has three channels behind the screen right?..or did i hear wrong?
aaron...why is the Velodyne HGS-18 not THX certified? this thing is pretty much the best SUB on the market...but 3000$?? no thanks:mad:

Whoa, I wondered into Off-topic by mistake. ;)
I personally think DTS sounds better than Dolby Digital. My understanding is that their similar, but DTS\'s sound is less-compressed on the disc, therefore sounding richer, though taking much more space as well. And DD while sounding good, is compressed, takes up less space on a DVD (why it\'s more common), but doesn\'t sound as good as DTS.
I\'ve tried a movie on my system that has both, and to me DTS does sound louder + better.

- what\'s in the f\'cking box?
I would like to know more though.

SDDS has 5 channels behind the screen. Left, Left-Center, Center, Right-Center, and Right.
That sub not being certified could be something as simple as what material it is made out of. If it\'s something new that THX has not approved they won\'t get certified. THX is notorious for waiting a long time to approve certain technologies.
-
i guess if your product gets THX\'s precious time....it deserves it;)
did not know SDDS had 5 channels behind the screen. Sony should get their ass in gear and make this available to more theaters...50 is not going to cut it:mad:
I can\'t wait to get my first HT up....some time this fall..in time for the PS2\'s AAA games...i think i\'m going with cerwin vega or JBL...that\'s a good start for my 16 years of age eh?:D

Not every manufacturer bothers to get (or try to get) a THX certificate for their products. And often it sounds just as good - the only difference is that it doesn\'t say THX on it. Not a big deal IMO. :)
But in movie theaters it\'s probably another story.
-
It\'s quite expensive for a theater to meet all of the qualifications to be certified, so most don\'t bother. N-Player, almost all AMC theaters use SDDS, so if you have one near you, you can check it out firsthand. Oddly enough, Sony has never announced trying to get SDDS put on DVD movies, which is kind of weird to me. Of course people would need to buy two more speakers, which would seldom be used, but it\'d be nice to have the option.
-
My local theater is an AMC15, the SDDS sounds decent but still can\'t compare to the Uptown Theater in Wash DC which uses Dolby Digital. When comparing the 2 theaters, there is no contest; it\'s the Uptwon all the way. On paper, one format might sound better than the other, but it all depends on how it\'s implemented. When a good movie comes out, my and my friends trek to the Uptown. :)
Sony has announced several times they have no interest in bringing SDDS to the home market. Like Aaron said, customers would have to buy 2-3 more speakers, plus a new decoder. Not to mention SDDS\'s data bitrate is larger than DD and DTS combined. Try fitting that on a DVD.
Oh and THX-certification is a crock. Don\'t base your purchases on whether or not there is a fancy THX-Ultra logo on it. With that said, it still looks damn cool on your equipment.

dbl post, sorry.
