Title: 3d modeling
Post by: Metal_Gear_Ray on March 24, 2001, 07:54:02 AM
Is anyone in this forum interested in 3d moddeling? I just got lightwave, an I\'m learing how to use it. Pretty cool I must say.

Does anyone have any experience in this sort of stuff, or with 3dstudioMax or Maya?

Yeah, I\'ve been using 3D Studio Max R2.5 a while ago. My computer isn\'t quite powerful enough though, but it\'s an awesome program. I like 3D modelling, it\'s a shame it\'s so hard. :)

Isnt LightWave like a 2500 dollar program.
That seems very expensive.
Are you going to have a job with that?

THese programs are easily had over the internet.

I have had 3d Studio Max for years.  I can only do basic stuff with it though because I never really had a good computer to run it.  I may play with it a bit more now that I have my 1.3ghz.

I do a little 3d modeling. My brother has a company where they do all sorts of heavy 3d modeling, webpages, databases etc (all kinds of stuff).
I\'m maynly into Photoshop,I\'ve been playing around with it since 2,0 but I\'ve never thought of making something out if the things I\'ve learned since then.I might start to work my brother designing webpages.

I study animation at an Arts academy, although I
picked 3d animation up only since Febr. 2000 at a
multimedia company called European Design Centre
in my trainee months.
They use Maya from Alias Wavefront. Most of the stuff
I\'m able of at the moment comes from working with the
studybook \'Learning Maya 2\'. I got Maya 3 myself btw.
Since I do animation my focus is not so much on perfect
modeling, but more on animation movement.
Currently I\'m in my graduation year and I\'m very busy
on a short maya film which is gonna be about 5 to 6
minutes long.
I must admit that games like MGS, Silent Hill and Golden Eye are influences to me and my graduation project.

Everybody says that lighwave is hard, its hard in the beginnig but later it gets easier and easier. I\'m just playing around with, just to have some fun!

Maya is the best but you need a heavy pc and win NT or Win 2000 to run it :(

I have been using 3ds max, and now learning Lightwave. Mostly for fun, but also for use in our demos.

Would\'nt it be great if one of the future-PS2-shooters would allow us to create player-skins and/or -models and save them on the PS2-HD?! I hope a game like Timesplitters 2 will give us the tools to do so. :)

Metal_Gear_Ray,  I work with Maya on my ( very modest ) PIII 667 with 256 MB and a GeForce 2 GTS 32 mb on Win 2000 pro.
It works all pretty good, although the 667 is the weakspot of my PC of course.
I just love NURBS and the inverse kinematics. It\'s just like working with a marionet puppet. Also NURBS modeling can be very nice and precise. Be carefull with the detail though or otherwise the PC won\'t handle it.

Metal_Gear_Ray,  sorry but Maya only runs on Win 2K or NT4, since 2K is actually NT5.
Hoe kom je trouwens aan die Nederlandse vertaling?
"Sorry maar Maya loopt alleen op Win 2K of NT4 ( 2K is eigenlijk NT5 )

I don\'t know what kind of PC you have but I noticed that the Geforce 2 and the 256 Mb ram really, really help alot. It just makes the workflow great : during working in Maya I can use hardware texturing and hardware lighting without virtually any slowdown. A schoolmate of mine actually works with Maya on a real
Sillicon Graphics 320 ( newest version of those series)
and he can\'t use lighting while working without slowdown. I\'ve seen it myself. I was thinking : man, my
GeForce kicks your Sillicon\'s ass. Although he probably has less rendertime due to the " bottleneck" of my
P III 667.
I know of course we\'ve debating XBOX on this forum, but I really think that the GeForce 3.? it gets is gonna be great. Nvidia rocks bigtime.
I would like to show you ppl some pics of my own project,
but how do I get those from my computer to over here ?

I\'d love to learn to do proper 3D modelling. I\'ve just played around with some freeware programs, but since my 333mHz 64mb P.O.C starts acting up even with some of my heavier PhotoShop projects, I don\'t think it could handle any sort of proper 3D prog.

Yah... I\'m still just a PhotoShop nut. And loving every second of it :)

He\' Metal_Gear_Ray,ik wist niet dat jij ook Nederlander bent.... en sorry ja nt4 en 2k. Van nt4 kun je toch wel makkelijk een kopietje via vrienden of zo krijgen ?
Your hardware will do ( although the 128 mb is a bit skinny for Maya, to be on the safe side, double that )

For the rest of the ppl over here : go check out
http://www.aliaswavefront.com

I see Maya is gonna be on mac os X and linux red hat
in a few months from now as well, cool.
For trial you can request order a demo/trial version of
Maya. It\'s called " a taste of Maya "
BTW. :
Anybody on how I can get pics from my pc to the forum?

um...you have to put them on the net first, like on geocities or another free hosting site, then you can post the pictures on the forum ;)
