Title: Drowned PS2
Post by: on March 28, 2001, 11:22:19 AM
My basement flooded, and my PS2 was on the floor.  The water got about halfway up (maybe barely as high as the power cord).  Does anyone out there know how to take this thing apart so I can clean the circuitry?  Also, I\'m not sure what the internal layout is... how likely is it that I\'m screwed?

Oh boy - that´s a hard one...

I would say try to "dry" it, but be carefull !
Don´t use a hairdryer, better put it near *f... what´s the english word* that thing that heats your home... :D
...at least for a week or so... and change the position every day...
DON´T OPEN IT !!!! SONY wouldn´t take it back...

I don\'t think Sony will take it back because the PS2 got wet, and it\'s not working.  Only on defected PS2 they will take it back.  :D  Just let it dry for a week. Don\'t open it or plug it in.

Well if you decide to open the sucker up be careful when removing the top off it.I read something, somewhere a long time ago in galaxy far far away that a very delicate wire was attached to the lid, that wire controlled the CD tray.Maybe I\'m talking BS maybe not.
ohh and my condolences on you drowned PS.2

buy a new ps2 at a store where you can get one,  switch your ps2 and return it saying it was a defect, and you will shop elsewhere.

a mate of mine tests flood damaged goods for insurance companies, he had  a PS2 that drowned and was caked in plaster from a collapsed ceiling. He plugged it in, put in a disc and away it went, worked perfectly :) so dont give up hope.

Well, I have a small amount of renewed hope.  The water was clean, but my Dreamcast (also on the same floor) had enough dust in it that the inside looked coated in mud, so I\'m afraid something similar could have happened in the PS2.  I\'ve already used a hairdryer on it, but on the lowest heat setting, so it never got warmer than normal operating temps.  I plan on waiting until this weekend (which will be 7 days since it was flooded) before turning it on.  It was plugged in but switched off at the time of the flooding.  I haven\'t double-checked this, but I thought the Sony warranty was only for 90 days.  I bought it on October 20 last year, so I\'m over that time.  I\'ll double-check the warranty length.  Thanks to all who chimed in.  Hopefully it will work, but if not then I\'ll look into some of the replacement options available to me.

That no longer works.  And I know b/c I did that about 6 times with my old PS1.  Remember the old overheating problem?  Well I remember it well.

Long story short:  Serial #s are now tracked by Retailers when you buy/sell/return consoles.  Check the bottom of your PS2 box if you still have it and you\'ll see there is a hole EXACTLY the same size as the serial label on your PS2 so that it can be seen without opening the unit.

Try this and you\'ll get busted.

Some retail chains do not check the serial number because they do not know any better.  Possibly walmart, Target, and Toys R Us.  Milage may vary depending on store managers.

Of course EB, EBX, Stop N Save, Babbages, Software ETC. are out of the question.

Yeah, some but not Wal-Mart, b/c they checked it on me one time.  So would you like to know how I swapped out my PS1 when they checked serial #s?

I\'m so sneaky I just took off the bottom half of the consoles and swapped em.

I dropped mine in the sink full of water last night when my girlfriend was mopping the floor, I was moving my PS2 to one room to another and I walked into the kitchen with my PS2 and sliped on the floor, the PS2 went flying into the sink and is now dead!

Get hold of Sony dealers and ask them to repair it.  If you have a UK PS2 and not a Japanese PS2 then your machine will still be under gaurantee.  GOOD LUCK!!

Perhaps you insurance company will take it in charge? Check it out...
