Spring TGS 2001: Namco announces Xenosaga
Namco is publishing the next RPG from the team behind Xenogears.
Namco confirmed today at TGS that Project X is, in actuality, an RPG by Monolith Soft, the team behind Xenogears--the acclaimed 1998 RPG published by Square. The game is titled Xenosaga, and it will be released for the PlayStation 2 this coming winter. Aside from the game\'s title, however, no other details have emerged.
Monolith Soft is a wholly owned subsidiary of Namco, and Tetsuya Takahashi, the producer of Xenogears, will head development of Xenosaga.

I mean, look at the title, it has to be at least based off of the Xenogears universe.
I remember there was a thread about this just a few days ago, and the person who said it might be a new Xenogears got harrased.
I thought he was missing a few screws as well.
So, whoever that was, I apologize.

I loved the storyline, the battle system and the mechs from Xenogears.
I wonder if this is being based on the war that took place before.
The one between the two powerful groups(ah....cant remember there names).
It had Fatima...that war.

I hope this is only the begining of Sony\'s biggest TGS yet. So far the X-Box stole the show by anounncing Panzer Dragoon and DOA3 as in development titles. But this announcment certainly counters well against the Panzer Dragoon one. Xenogears was a brilliantly concieved poorly executed game, but as most of the complaints are readily addressible I have high hopes for the game.
This is absolutely great. It\'s just the first example of competition driving the market. X-box is trying to make a name for itself, and PS2 is trying to deliver a pre-fight knockout punch, but its pretty obvious that Sony is taking it very seriously. No more slacking Sony,its time toshow what you\'re made of. As for X-Box, it has to prove itself a contender and its doing a great job so far.
Gamers rejoyce, the renaissance is upon us!

How was Xenogears poorly executed.

Well in the end the title just got to ambitious for it\'s own good. The story got fairly muddled, whether this is as a result of poor translation or the writters digging themselves in too deep I\'m not sure. And you spent the last CD playing more or less a history text book with interactive battles.IE "Then General Patton brought his tank briggade within range of Berlin and prepared for the attack. But he was troubled in his midn because his father...blah, blah, blah" Then you push a few buttons, win the battle and start off again. I just don\'t feel that the end product was the original intent of the gamemakers.

I just wish they hadnt brought the big monster into the story and just left it as the Ground-dwellers versus the sheperds.
That would have been better.
Still, it was a wonderful game.

I especially loved the visual style (still love it actually), I hope they\'ll be able to preserve the handrawn anime look, although it seems doubtful, the characters are almost guaranteed to be polygonal.
Namco did make Seven which supposedly has a hand drawn look to it, but I\'m not sure how well it went off. Not very well I heard somewhere.
Does anyone know? Did anyone import it?
I thought is was out in Japan, but I might be totally off.

Nope. We\'re talking about a PS2 game by NAMCO titled Seven. It\'s supposedly a sword fighting 2-d action game.

You are combing two games with slightly the same names.
Its kinda wierd.
Seven is a 2d RPG, and your team is set up like this in a battle:
1st row) ****
2nd row)****
3rd row) ****
The first row can directly attack the enemy.
The second row can assist the first row and cast spells.
The third row recovers HP and MP.
You can switch any row with any other row, which creates quite a unique battle system.
Got good reviews, sold pretty well.
Isnt Coming to America, for some dumb reason.
Seven BLADES, is a 3d action game where an evil force has come back, and the way to destroy is to collect all seven swords for all seven character.
Didnt get very good reviews.

I was right...or it has some connection to Xenogears anyway. I think the Xenosaga title gives it away. This is better news to me then hearing about FFX. I just wish we knew more about it though. This is going to be so cool...

If it\'s a game based on Xenogears, then it\'s already bought. I can\'t wait for more info. Xenogears = One of the best games I\'ve ever played.

TGS 2001: Monolith Soft\'s Xenosaga
Project X is finally revealed, and it\'s not the sequel to Xenogears. Details and first video inside.

It looks like it\'s actually the prequel to Xenogears. Had you going, didn\'t I?
The trailer for Xenosaga, the long-awaited secret project from Namco subsidiary Monolith Soft, was maybe a little low on game info, but it was crammed to the gills with strange references to the cult-favorite PlayStation RPG. Text flowed about a screen full of swirling colors while a lovely vocal theme played, and amid all the Japanese one could pick up all kinds of familiar terms: "Zohar," "DME," "Episode 1," "EPR," "20XX," "T.O.P.," "Nataraja," "U-TIC," the letter Omega, and much, much more. The "Episode 1" is the important part -- it indicates that this game is probably the first installment in producer Tetsuya Takahashi\'s conceived epic, of which Xenogears was episode...4? 5? Dammit, I\'m in Tokyo and my copy of Xenogears Perfect Works is in San Francisco. Oh, well.
The strangeness ended with the main title and a movie-style display of staff information. The game\'s proper name is "Tetsuya Takahashi\'s Xenosaga" (Takahashi was the producer of Xenogears and is the head of Monolith Soft. The production design is led by Junya Ishigaki (also a Xenogears veteran), character designs are by Kunihiko Tanaka (ditto), and the music is composed by Yasunori Mitsuda (of Xenogears and Chrono Cross fame). Xenosaga will be officially debuted later this year -- Namco advertised an exhibition at Ebisu Garden Hall in Tokyo on July 8. Release information is not firm, but indications seem to be that the game will be released in 2001. In the meantime, keep an eye on the as-yet-unopened xenosaga.com (as well as monolithsoft.co.jp) for updates.
