Title: Winning Eleven 5 Review @ IGN
Post by: Lavan on April 04, 2001, 06:36:26 PM
I usually don\'t refer to sports reviews by \'professional\' sites, least not soccer reviews, because most of those reviewers have their heads up their @sses (or is that up EA Sports\' @ss?).

Anyway, IGN have done a decent reviewing of Winning Eleven 5, this is the first review of a soccer game by a \'professional\' site that actually MENTIONS a real-life soccer player\'s name and talks about real soccer (as opposed to drooling over the game\'s soundtrack).

Quote;
"The verdict is in: Konami\'s newest soccer game is the Gran Turismo of the sport."

:)

http://ps2.ign.com/news/33149.html

The game also sold more copies than ZOE and Shadow of Destiny in Japan. I am praying that it comes to North America...

Oh brother, I just go and praise this reviewer for his soccer knowledge and then I see the captions for the screenshots;

This one\'s is;

"Penalty kick from a different angle"

(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fps2media.ign.com%2Fmedia%2Fnews%2Fimage%2Fwinning11%2Fwinning11_10.jpg&hash=193d922261e7464b3227d5c950fda3e1f7fbd33a)

God help us all....

Well at least we know from Famitsu, THE BOUNCER, and other sources that the game is still brilliant.

It\'s out in Japan now, and an enhanced version will come out in Europe in September/October.

I don\'t know if it will come to North America. :(

Hookmonkey,

This forum is very much anti-piracy, and even though I do believe you will buy ISSEVO3/WE5 when it officially comes out in Europe it doesn\'t really give you an excuse to pirate WE5.

I\'m glad there\'s another soccer fan on these forums, but please don\'t talk about/mention piracy here or you\'ll be flamed.

And no, I\'m not insanely jealous that you\'ll be playing WE5 on Monday......ok, maybe I am. ;)

Lavan/Forum, I understand your opinion about anti-piracy and I think that a developer like Konami really deserves money for a game like ISS, I purchased all the games of the ISS series legal since ISS deluxe on the SNES.  But with winning eleven 5 its  a different thing,  it wont be coming out until September, and since Im a huge ISS fan I just cant wait. But Im 100% sure that I will buy the european version of ISS. Again I dont support piracy but I just cant wait :)

Greetings hookmonkey

Oh no, I completely understand what you\'re saying, and like I said I do believe you. But some people have been mercilessly flamed for even mentioning a mod-chip, and again we don\'t want to get PSX2Central in trouble or anything, so I was just letting you know.

Please give us some impressions of the game after you get some solid playing time.

Cheers.

hi ive had winning 11-5 now for about 4 days and have played it for about 3 hours-5hours a night the following are my impressions :

first of all the players are amazing, when they emerge from the tunnel they look around at the amosphere almost as though they are surprised as such a turn out.
Its all there Davids orange shades , batistuta s headband , larrsons new shaved head lookthe list is endless. Right onto the gameplay - starts off tricky dispissesed several times in midfield but as u get used 2 the controls u get to master the moves. Chances are few and far between and when u actually carve out an oppening u feel fufilled even moreso if ur shot hits the net. It was revieved saying that the goalkeepers were poor in the preview version but i can ensure u thats bul$hit as the keepers produce amazing one handed saves resulting in goal mouth scrambles. The old over laping play is not so effective as the cpu al is devestatingly good i.e follow runners down the wing , pulling shirts off the ball etc. The replays are flawless. The dribbling element is stunning in WE 5 u can actually go on a mazzy run mabye tacking on 2 defenders but be warned dont be 2 confident the defenders can easily catch up as running with the ball is slower than manually just running. Well if any one else needs any more info ill be happy to help.

oh yeah its a 100% legitamite copy !!!

if you\'re going to get your ps2 chipped, why don\'t you buy an original import copy of winning eleven 5? http://www2.cex.co.uk/gaming/product_list.asp have copies in stock for £65. if you want the game that bad, then pay for it, instead of ripping konami off!!!

The true mark of a great sports game, I think, is if it can make a person who is not a fan of the sport become immersed...Does this game do that?  I mean, I\'m not a soccer fan or a hockey fan, but I have played really fun hockey games.  Does Winning 11 qualify in this regard?  Would a non-fan like myself like this game, in your opinion? (keeping in mind that I love sports games in general)

YES! YES! Wow, I feel the same way about the truely great sports games. Well, let me tell you that the prequel to this game (Winning Eleven 4) has been out on the PSX for almost two years as ESPN MLS GameNight and ISS Pro Evolution. I have both games and they are, IMO, the best sports games ever. Now while I\'m a soccer nut, the true measure of their greatness is that the four player mode has really hooked my buddies who aren\'t soccer fans in the slightest. 4 Player ISS Pro Evolution is brilliant - the game requires more skill than any other sports game I know, and it has a steep learning curve, but at the same time it\'s a blast to play and there\'s a real sense of satisfaction not just in scoring but even in playing defence properly.

Every weekend my friends and I get together to play videogames and for the past SIX months it\'s been the game we\'ve played the most - even more than 4-player Virtua Tennis!

To those who believe that simulations can\'t be fun, the Winning Eleven series really blows a hole in that theory. There\'s no doubt in my mind that WE5 will be the best sports game ever when it comes out in it\'s enhanced form in Europe.

If you want to know more about ISS PE/MLS GameNight check out my review at SGN;

http://www.sgn.cc/soccer/espn_mls_gamenight/review_psx.shtml

It was also voted as our Playstation sports game of the year last year.

Is this game going to be brought over to the states?
Title: Winning Eleven 5 Review @ IGN
Post by: Lavan on April 09, 2001, 03:02:52 PM
That, I don\'t know.

Neither ISS Pro Evolution nor ESPN MLS GameNight sold well (while crap Fifa sold like hotcakes). A lot of this had to do with the idiots at IGN and other major sites/magazines that trashed both games basically because they didn\'t understand soccer and couldn\'t handle the learning curve. While in Europe and Japan ISS PE (known there as WE4) was getting rave reviews.

I think a good barometer will be the upcomming ESPN MLS ExtraTime (basically a PS2 Winning Eleven 4.5). If ExtraTime sells well in North America (i\'ve already pre-ordered mine) then I\'m sure Konami will bring WE5 over to North America.

ESPN MLS ExtraTime (comming out on the 24th of April) won\'t be as good as WE5, but I\'m sure it\'ll still be a blast.

it sounds like mls extratime is iss 2000 which was released on launch day in europe. this game was produced by the same team who make iss for n64, and isn\'t quite as good as the winning eleven/ iss pro evolution series for playstation. it is still better than fifa, though the gameplay is more arcade based than winning eleven 5.

Tell me ma to put the champagne on ice, we\'re going to cardiff twice, tell me ma..

God\'s goal was magnificient - I also loved the little bit of argy-bargy with the steward after the goal too. :)

I truly hope we thump the Tractor Boyz today - we have such a fixture jam and those bastards refused to re-arrange the fixture.

I\'m an expatriated Brit living in Canada, I was born in Chichester, but my dad went to University in Liverpool and I\'ve been a pool fan all my life - came to Canada in
\'93.

Actually, from videos and KCEA\'s press release it appears to be a PS2 version of ISSPE2 (ie WE2000). I\'ll start a new thread soon and I\'ll post more info on ESPN MLS ExtraTime.

great name kopking. i\'ve read several reviews of winning eleven 5 and it sounds awsome, iss has the best gameplay of any football game, though it\'s the small details in winning eleven 5 that really make it stand out such as the excellent stadiums, crowd, and sound effects. all this should should be even better in the european versions. imagine playing as liverpool in the master league, with the players walking out to you\'ll never walk alone, and all the flares going off, then after kick off, the crown breaking into chants of poor scouser tommy. this game is gonna be awesome

lavan, the ipswich game finished 1-1 by the way

i was devistated by the score line !! well anyways i own winning 11-5 and i think i should tell u somethings that u seem 2 be misled on

1. sorry but the croud dont annimate , sing at all
2. goal keepers easily beating especially on headers and outside the 18 yard box

all in all the game is superb and is worth getting pitty about the keepers though - i beet chile on hard 6-1 with 5 goals coming from outside 18 yard box "!!

 well i was brazil but 6-1 has that ever happened on iss in previous versions i am even beating france 4-0 on hard now but annimation is great (players) and replays spot on.

The game is more technical through balls need more thought and timing and the defenders croud the player who is shooting and can match strickers for speed.

all in all a game worthy of a 9/10 - 10 if the keepers are improved on in the uk realease.

also liverpool are good on it but "the god" (fowler) is on the bench and the formation is 5-3-2 no wat toooooo defensive man

need any more info just ask

later dudes

re: European version of WE5 - yes that would be awesome if they added all the Premiership teams + stadiums + chants. Imagine, you could have a virtual Old Trafford with virtual fans eating virtual prawn sandwiches! How authentic would that be! :D

re: Ipswich
Not delighted with the result, but still 2 games in hand and we have a rediculous schedule - if United had a similar schedule Fergie would throw his toys out the pram and, of course, the FA would yield and re-arange the schedule.

MetalGear007 - why don\'t you try playing the game with a mediocre or a bad team like Wales or Jamaica - then it won\'t be so easy.

Play as Wales - they\'re my favourite team in ISS Pro Evo and should have similar ratings in WE5, and stick with their default 5-3-2 formation and you can get some pretty realistic scores even if you are a superstar. They only have one good player - Ryan Giggs, the rest are mediocre at best (ie Savage, Speed, Blake etc).

woooooooooo hooooooooooooo, its got liverpool init, that rocks. yea that would be cool if the crowdes sang all the right songs, man unt fans just sat there untill they scored, man unt are crap untill extra time where they smack some goals in:D I think in game they should have a thing on it that you can switch on and off  so the crowd shout obsenities at the players and sometime coins are thrown at the players and knock them out, or players get in fights with players/refs/crowds:Dbut the formation is all wrong, the reason fowler is on the bench is probably when they were making this game fowler was coming back from injury and was going through a bad patch :D is this game really up to date? i mean does jari play for liverpool???? Have you heard liverpool are gonna try sign more midfielders in the summer??? d. anderton (sicknote) and daniel Andersson ( from seria-a) also i have the feeling that hes gonna try to get joe cole and/ micheal carrick.

We don\'t want Anderton because he\'s crap and he\'s injured all the time. We don\'t need Cole and Carrick because for the price we\'ll have to pay we\'d be able to get Zidane and Davids - I\'m not joking, Old \'arry got 18 million quid for Rio \'lack of concentration\' Ferdinand, so he\'ll want at least 15 million for Cole and Carrick EACH - you have to factor in the \'inflation\' because they\'re English players. I think Lampard will go to Leeds in the summer for 10+ million.

Andersson - I don\'t know. I don\'t think we need any more midfielders - we have the right mix and a lot of them too - Berger, Biscan, God Part 2, Smicer, Barmby, Murphy, Hamann, Ziege, Macca, & Redknapp. Biscan will play a lot more next season because Paddy Berger will get an EU passport - so then we\'ll be back down to the max of 3 non-EU players (Henchoz, Smicer and Disco Biscuit Biscan). I think Biscan and Stevie G will be our #1 midfield partnership for years to come, Igor had a great start but he\'s faltered but you have to consider he\'s just getting used to the EPL and he must be knackered because he played almost a full Croatian season before he came to us.

What we do need is another quality central defender, a young right back, and Chris Kirland from Coventry to be Sander\'s backup because I don\'t think Pegguy is that good. We may, as you said before, do a swap of Ziege for Lizarazu which would be good (although I reckon Carra is the best left back in the EPL).

As for WE5 - the rosters, graphics and features will all be updated for an enhanced European version which will be out in September/October. You lucky bastards! ;)
