Anyone having a problem where their PS2 stops reading CDs? I haven\'t been abusing mine, I take really good care of it. WIll Sony repair it, do they have some kind of warrenty? Ahh, I don\'t know what to do, must play PS2. HELP!!!

My PS2 for some reason just in last 3 days has been doing the same thing. Well, it still reads all DVDs perfectly, movies and games on the DVD format, and it also reads music CDs just fine. Nothing wrong at all.
Then in the last 3 days it stopped playing CD-rom based games. Like Timesplitters and my MGS2 demo and my SSX copy wouldn\'t work at all. I got the "Disc read error" It really pissed me off. So, I though that maybe it was just some rare chance that all of my games were scratched, which they\'re perfect on the back(I\'m very careful with discs), I put in some old PSX games and none of them worked. Then just last night I stick in the MGS2 demo and it booted up just fine. After I was done I was in the mood for some multiplayer Timesplitters with my Bro and it wouldn\'t work. I tried the MGS2 demo again and couldn\'t get it to work. It hasn\'t worked since.
I am extremely pissed right now. I think my warranty is up. Haven\'t read all of the exact info on it yet but isn\'t the warranty only 90 days? Maybe less...
Anyway I am so pissed off right now! Happen to anyone else? I tried Diagnostics and all that too and it did nothing.
My personal theory is that the laser is seeing the CD format for games as invalid. It can\'t be a broken oscillator because it reads my music CDs just fine. This is really pissing me off though.
I am so MAD!!!!!!!!!! F*ck Sony right now. Pieces of Sh*t. Ahhhhhh!!!!
Oh, I too have been very gentle with my PS2. Never moved it. It is always dusted and it\'s never been banged or shoved.

did you drop it in teh bath tub?

Mine has experienced no such problem. :)
I\'d suggest giving Sony a call and asking what\'s up. That\'s basically the only thing you can do besides just waiting around and seeing if it works again in a day or two.
Good luck to both of you!

I was planing on calling tomorrow. If it needs repairs it better not cost much. I just can\'t afford it right now. I\'ve got two school proms coming up (Mine and my girlfriend\'s) that I\'m going to and a trip to Six Flags:Magic mountain in the beginning of May. I just bought a car and I\'m paying insurance and fuel right now. I am just so pissed right now!!!
Thanks anyways you guys...

Mine had a similar problem but it had a lot of problems reading DVD\'s. I called about a week ago and it sounded like a pretty common problem. They said it had something to do with the hardware and since my warranty was up I would have to pay to get it fixed. Unfortunately it\'s gonna cost about $126 to fix the darn thing, and then take 10-15 working days. Needless to say, I wasn\'t too pleased to hear this bit of info. I\'m probably gonna send it in still, but I think it\'s crap that they aren\'t doing a recall of some sort when it seems like this happened to a lot of people. Anyone else experiencing these difficulties?

thats what i thought, but it\'s not 90 days its a full year "wich i think is great cause i mean 90 days doe not mean sheet!, i was worried that if the 90 days would pass then it would get jacked up i would have a worthless PS2, and the scary thing is that my PS2 hasn\'t been reading my cd\'s either!!! well its only happened 3 times so far with Z.O.E. the MGS2 demo, and once with shadow of destiny, dont tell me i have a Defective ps2 cause it\'s been flawless ever since i got it,

I\'m going back to where I bought the unit tomorrow to ask about the warranty, but when I called they told me the warranty was only for 90 days. If I find out it was different they\'re going to get a very nasty call back from me, I guarantee it. I\'ll update you when I find out.

Sony warranty is 1 year
so you have to contact Sony. The place you bought it from probably only allows for 90 days

After reading all these replies I\'m kinda glad that I got hooked up with EB\'s ESA thing, which is basically a 2-year warranty. It only cost me $50 too. :D

This is pretty freaky man... I have had no problems with my playstation ...yet, but alot of people have and I don\'t want to get it fixed or whatever. Has sony said anything about this? I don\'t think it is fair to buy something for 500 bucks (canadian) and have to send it back in a short period of time because it doesn\'t read cd\'s. Even if you have warranty it\'s still a drag! I just hope this doesn\'t happen to my PS2.

When I called the Sony help line they were the ones who told me the warranty was only for 90 days. That\'s why I want to check at the store tomorrow. I\'ll read through all my stuff that came with it as well to make sure. I\'ll let you all know for sure tomorrow.

When I had Sony on the phone, one of many times, they never told me how long the warranty was; they only asked me when I bought it.
And the 10-15 days is from the date your unit is assigned to a technician. So if it takes 3 days to get to the service center and 10 days for them to fix it and 4 days to get it back, that\'s 17 days.
And then hope they fix it right the first time.
It seems like half the people who got a unit on launch are the ones with the problems.

Oh c\'mon ppl don\'t let yourself get hassled by some
stupid shopclerk or lazy Sony helpdesk ppl.
READ your PS2 manual guide. At the end after the page
with \'troubleshooting\' issues you find the Warranty page
and it says, printed in black on white, ONE full year of
warranty. Be sure to read the legal warranty rights though !
And finally to all ppl with those nasty cdreading probs.
: Good luck
BTW. Unknown , you say it occurred 3 times and still fine ? I wouldn\'t take that , call Sony !

Not another one!!! Sorry to hear about this problem! Recently the same problem happened to me and I posted a same thread, my playstation 2 just suddenly stopped reading DVD\'s so I preformed the diagnostic mode on my machine, kept getting the DISC READ ERROR! I said to my self I don\'t need the dvd player, I already own one. Then suddenly I can\'t play PSONE or PS2 games that really pissed me off and I called Sony! Well, I called Sony told them my problem and they told me to send it in. To my surprise they told me it was a pretty common problem. I WAS SHOCKED!!! I totally agree with Ratlad Sony should do some type of recall! For some reason there are a number of units that simply stop reading the discs. I am totally pissed off at Sony! They know they have faulty units out there and they aren\'t doing a dam thing.....
Well luckily I am still under warranty and I sent in my playstation. they told me the same thing they told EmperorRob "it will take 10-15 days is from the date your unit is assigned to a technician. So if it takes 3 days to get to the service center and 10 days for them to fix it and 4 days to get it back, that\'s 20 days."
Its been two weeks since I sent in my Playstation 2 and I haven\'t received anything. One thing Sony told me was if your unit cant be repaired they\'ll give you a new unit, and when you receive your unit back from the technician you get a whole new 90 days of warranty again.
(I\'m not sure about the 1 year warranty, Sony told me 90 days)
I really regret not getting the store full 2 year warranty. I bought my unit from Comp USA. I suggest that if anyone is planning on buying a new system to strongly think about getting the extended warranty. It will save you a lot of trouble in the future if your unit goes faulty and trust me there are faulty units out there. SONY KNOWS!!!

Well, I went and read my manual today and then went to the store. I don\'t know what manual you guys are reading, but mine says it\'s only a 90-day warranty. The store clerk confirmed it as well, then added that they do sell an extended warranty which lasts a full year. What sucks is I would have easily bought the extension, but in all the dozens of times I went in before I bought it they never once mentioned it, so I figured they didn\'t have one. This really sucks. :( But at least now I know that I\'m not going to buy any more consoles from any place that doesn\'t offer an extended warranty.

The warranty is 90 days for the United States and Canada. Is also states you must provide a bill of sale for the warranty ,but since my unit went in within 90 of the launch I wasn\'t asked to provide a receipt which is good b/c I didn\'t have it anymore.
