Title: Yes!Finally!Computer shoppin\'!
Post by: Living-In-Clip on April 08, 2001, 09:28:09 PM
Finally, I went today for a new computer. I ended up with the 600 G3, 40 gig, 128 megs, CD-RW, 10/100 ethernet, 2 USB, 2 FIREWIRE Graphite Imac and a free Laser printer. Then, I picked up some RAM for this Wintel machine, so I\'ve got 192 in it now, and I now have broadband!!!!! DirecPC, thank god for satelite connection.

Ah, all in all a great day.

I absolutely cannot believe the price of RAM these days.  I\'m ordering a 256 MB piece of DDR for $100 !!!!!

Congratulations dude, new computers rule.  Although I know absolutely nothing about Macs, 192 RAM = good.

A free laser printer?  Is it color, if so that\'s the bomb.  What\'s the speed on the burner and the processor?

Sorry to say this, but Macs are much better than PC\'s.
They run faster, and crash less.
Too bad nothing works with them anymore.
I think they are making a comeback though.
There have been a lot of people recently buying Macs at my job.
Oh yeah, windows is producing a new operating system that will allow Mac type processers to work.
Isnt that interesting.
Found that out today from a windows Beat tester.

Interesting, but the less Windows I have in my life the better.

Well, I\'ve already got two WIntel/Windoze/WIndows machines in my life, I don\'t really need another. I will probably network them all together tommorw via 10/100 ethernet.

As for the argument that Mac\'s are real "pcs". Blah. It is all personal preference, but I personally perfer the Mac OS as to the Windows machine, though I can\'t deny that the 2K/NT kernel is extremely stable. But, anything else is complete crap (i.e, the 9x kernel).

Yeah, it was a free color laser jet printer. :)

The mac OS doesn\'t crash that much really, I haven\'t crashed yet, granted I just got it. But, I remember crashing my first Wintel box within 30 mintues of owning it. Ah, the sweet days of 95.

If for some reason, someone wanted to run Wintel products on the Apple, they could via Virtual PC. THough, why anyone would do such a thing I\'m not sure. It sort of kills the purpose of buying a Apple in the first place. I\'m pretty much in a "comfortable" state. I can run my Wintel products on my WIntel boxes and when I want to use a real OS (heh..) I can use my Imac.

Oh yeah, and by the so called "benchmark tests" the G4 out performs the Intel P4s. Not that it really matters though.

And in my opinion, you can never know one to many OS\'es. You never know when it may come in handy to know a certain OS.
:)

The big push behind the Pentium 4\'s is their bandwidth.  RDRAM is supposed to be "awesome" but at the apps & games we run now it mostly performs on par with the Athlon which is a system I will soon buy and join you in the new computer club! :D

MUA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!

I only paid $95

MUA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!

Seriously this stuff is freaking cheap. I am in the process of making my PC 1337 so that I won\'t have to upgrade for awhile. I just bought a 1gig P3 and I now have *drumroll please* 768 mutha-shaggin megs of ram. Oh yeah that is 1337.

Coming Soon:

-75 gig 7200rpm HDD
-Plextor 16x/10x/40x Burner
-64mb AGP card (Haven\'t decided on a brand yet)

And I already have a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum card w/ Altec Lansing\'s 5pc speaker set(the cool looking one).

In case anyone was wondering, I use my computer for work as well as gaming so I get a lot of money with which to upgrade it.

Well unless you want to wait and dish out ~$400 for a GeForce 3.. get yourself a GeForce 2 GTS/PRO..

MetalGear + Gohan,

You can just wait till the GeForce 3 comes out and prices of the GeForce 2 are sure to sink.

Living-in-Clip,

Ah I wasn\'t aware that you had other PCs. :) In the end it is all up to personal preference but I hate both MacOS and Winblows. What can ya do? I like linux but the support is not there for many things.

Faith; the only thing Macs have an advantage over PCs right now is audio producing/editing/etc. It used to be graphic apps, but not anymore. Want to use Maya (the best 3d modeling/animating program) can\'t on a Mac, only on NT/2K.

Gohan, what type of RAM did you get for $95?

I already have an old burner that does the job so I\'ve decided to postpone that little purchase for now.

Got a link to that Altec speaker set?

And are you running OS X or OS 9,x?If it\'s OS X how is it running on the G3?How is the window resising?

Yeah man, I was, but I had a limited amount of cash and the problem was I am not the only user. THe others didn\'t want to learn a new OS, but they was also tired of WIN9x crashing on them. SO, I took some of the money invested in some RAM and Win2K. The rest of the money was spent on various stuff (i.e, DVD and stuff for the Girlfriend). I ended up with just enough for the Imac. I\'m happy either way, I don\'t really need all that power.

As for OS X, I don\'t have it. It seemed rather shoddy for the current release and I decided to wait for thenext version, which should come out in around June, then I\'ll install OS X.

I need to add a new HD, which I am not sure why I haven\'t, as I have a spare 20 gig laying in another computer that is never used.

My favorite upgrade so far though is broadband. I am going to network the MAC / WIntel machines all together that way I can use the satelite connection with the MAC.
Damn DirecPC won\'t convert their software to work with the MAC platform. Otherwise it would, as all it is a standard USB modem.

I just upgraded my PC today. I got a 40 gig IBM harddisk - and now my PC is problem free again - feels very good! :D

Next on the list is more RAM, a 17" monitor and a Logitech Optical Wheel mouse.
