I have heard rumors of the price dropping at e3, which seems plausible as it\'s following the same pricing schedule as the original playstation. The reason I ask this is because I don\'t have a ps2 at the moment and none of the games that interest me are coming out until the summer. I do not want to buy a playstation 2 now and have the price drop $50 or more in a month at e3.

hmmm i just have this feeling that it won\'t drop in price until christmas but i hope that is not true
its just that people are still buying these things up and sony is loving it up - but if anhything they will probaly dro it in the summer or maybe in the begining of fall

Seriously, I don\'t see Sony lowering the price until MS or Nintendo\'s machines hit the market.
That said, if either one (probably MS) launches this fall, Sony will price the PS2 at or possibly below the price of the competitions. Unless of course it\'s just too low. $250 by Christmas seems vey likely.

A better question for those of us who already own one:
When will they drop the software price? $49.99 seems very exorbitant to me. My next sentence was going to be a crude reference to the experience of puchasing a PS2 game, but thankfully I thought twice about it and erased it. That price does contribute a bitter taste to the experience of buying a "game." Let the managers at Sony keep in mind that I would have bought many more games by this time if they were priced at $35 or $39 instead. Greed has it\'s shortcomings.

The price of the games probably won\'t start to drop until this fall, maybe late summer. Sony still has to make the money back that it spent on the PS2 manufacturing and launch.

I read an article saying that sony had developed a better/cheaper way to layer their chips, and that would save them money. They could expect to start making money by the end of this summer, so I woudn\'t expect it to lower before then. If I find the article again, I\'ll edit it in.
EDIT:
SIIIIGH screw it. I saw that article yesterday, right off a site link from PSX2CENTRAL but I can\'t find it today.

it wont drop till around the MS X box release

I heard there will be a 50 dollar price drop when the new next gen systems are released.

I read somewhere (I believe it was in PSM) that the price was dropping the equivalent of $100 US in Japan on the one year anniversary of its launch. The story proposed that the same thing is very possible here...so expect some type of price drop in October, but not before. So if you can really wait that long to not play really cool games, so be it....
As for the software issue, I\'ve said it before and I\'ll say it again...new games for a new system have been $50 since around Mario Bros. 2 for the NES...this rate of absolutely no inflation in over ten years is quite remarkable, really. So suck it up; if you can\'t afford it, you can\'t afford it. This doesn\'t seem to have been a problem for the gaming industry in general, and it sure as hell isn\'t a problem for me. When games like Donkey Kong and Perfect Dark rise above the $50 line, that\'s the only time I have a problem...but even then, if you want the game, you\'ll still buy it. Just the cost of our little hobby...

I agree with CygnusXI, Sony will be following the Xbox and Gamecube very closely.
It is all part of their marketing skills, when they hear that Xbox/Gamecube is near to launching they will have a sudden price drop.
I don\'t think they will be dropping the price after E3, the media will get exited of what games they have seen and go out to buy their PS2,s.
