Hi Guys
Yesterday I was, for the first time, really having a good look at my PS2.... I wander why Sony only decided on two ports instead of 4. Make us fork out all our cash!!...which we could have used to buy a game or memory card instead.
What do you guys think?
-
Why more ??!!
Most Games suck if you play them with 4 Players... You can“t see anything on the screen !
2 is enough !
-
coz 3/4 of the game\'s dont support 4 player mode. You can use a multitap or in the future sony\'s usb controllers to play Timesplitters or Q3R.
heck..4 player games will become useless once ps2 goes online :)
-
I think it\'s better this way. You have to take the following into consideration:
1) Would the PS2 have cost more (even a bit) if it had had four control ports? I don\'t want to pay for something I will never use.
2) Would the PS2 have had to be a little larger?
I personally am never going to buy more than 2 controlers, or play 4 player games. I learned from goldeneye that that\'s just too much stuff on too small a screen.
-
Dang! You guys beat me to it. My two reasons were:
1. Cost.....(The PS2 is expensive enough!!)
2. The majority of games/gamers don\'t use 4 players.
....Well, that\'s about it:)

Dawid22
Where do you wander my friend ? The sidewalk? lol
To the point now : 4 ppl on one PS2 ; one might trip over
a cable or pull accidently to far the gamepad cable ; all kinds of stuff to make your precious PS2 fall from the table. We wouldn\'t want that to happen now, would we? :D
BTW Fatalxception, Goldeneye IS great in 4 player mode. In 4player splitscreen it does have enough detail and framerate to create awesome multiplayer.

There actually is 4 controller ports..... Teh USB in the front... I bet there will be USB controllers out in the future which will bring the # of ports up to 4..
So its just how you look at it I suppose...
ha ha ha ha

I think it was more of a marketing scheme for Sony to make more money, and they did. I think half of the people who bought a PS2 bought a multitap, I know I did. :)
-
As stated earlier the PS2 would absolutely be larger if they added the 2 extra controller ports. Sony\'s strategy was probably between keeping the console as small as possible and the fact that there is a small % of users who use 4 ports. I am glad for their decision.
-
The PS2 has serial ports on the front (in the blue thing) This is the same technology as the Xbox controllers. I heard that sony will be making controlers that utilize those ports, so, in a sense, Ps2 has 4 controller ports
-
Why only two controller ports? Because Sony is a cash loving and dirty company. Sure we all wanted 2 extra ports but instead they gave us 2 and made us buy multi-taps. ****ers. Its all about the money, and Sony knows this. They\'re just draining you people dry of your money...
Some people might say that 4 controller ports are not truly nessacary but they just haven\'t experienced it enough to give a qualified opinion on the matter.
I\'ll just use one example to prove my point:
Goldeneye(N64) definately would have not sold over 7 million copies if there was no 4 player multiplayer option.
-
Jumpman, I have to strongly disagree.
If Sony added 2 more controller ports, they would also have to add the m/c slots to go with them. This would upset the design and increase the cost.
They are already taking a loss on hardware. Alot of people, including the media were bit*ing about the $299 price tag. With the extra ports and m/c slots either Sony would have to take an even bigger loss per unit, or the price would have been jacked up to $330-$350.
It was a sound financial, business decision, and also had statistical backing due to the lack of 4 player support in both game titles and users.
....And besides, Sony doesn\'t even have a multitap available yet, do they?? It\'s the third party manufacturers like Pelican, and Interact that are making money off of Sony\'s (right) decision.
-
Maybe because it didn\'t fit properly into the design, and the psx did fine with only 2 controller ports.
-
Jumpman is right. Two more controller and m/c ports could have easily been placed on the front without changing the design of the system. Four player games are a lot of fun; just go play Goldeneye, Q3, UT, MK64, PD, TD:LM, LTSP, and many others. If you think four player split screen isn\'t fun then you probably haven\'t played it with any of those games.
I can\'t believe how some of you will defend Sony no matter what.

Have you seen the front of the ps2? Where would it go? On the disc tray? The holes that allows the dust and wind to blow out of the system. I think if they were to make two more controller and mcard slot, Sony would have to change the design.

The design wouldn\'t significantly change if two more ports were added. Also, 2 more m/c slots wouldn\'t nessaccarly be needed. The system that I\'m extremely excited about right now has only two m/c slots and four controller ports( no its not the Xbox).

And that\'s what you get for making a flawed piece of technology...
But seriously, you can only blame Sony for that. Incase you haven\'t notice yet, the PS2 isn\'t exactly a break through in technological advances. They goofed up. No vram, EE works like a sweat shop kid, it\'s pretty messed up. I guess they couldn\'t of added two more controller ports because the system is too...well...****ed up as it is. Blame Sony for making a extremely high priced machine.
It was a sound financial, business decision, and also had statistical backing due to the lack of 4 player support in both game titles and users.
Je ne comprend pas...

Yeah I completely take back what I said earlier about Sony milking their fans for money.
But still, they should of done a better job with the PS2 itself. Then they probably could of included two more controller ports and that would be beneficial to their fans.
-
The answer is simple. Sony profits more from making us buy a multi-tap. It\'s impractical in this day and age to release a console without four controller ports. Yeah I guess a 4-player split screen game would be no fun......if you were playing on a 13inch TV. Sports games don\'t even need to split the screen up when playing multiplayer. Also, the main reason a lot of games don\'t support over 2 players on the PS2 is because it didn\'t come with 4 ports, so the developers figure it\'s a waste of time. 4 player games can be a whole lot of fun. It\'s a damn shame that I have to give Sony more of my money just to plug 2 more controllers into my PS2. Hmmm, I wouldn\'t be suprised if they also intentionally made it so the PSone multi-tap wouldn\'t work with the PS2.

I\'m not sure whether you meant that in jest or not, regardless, of course Sony is a cash loving company - they\'re not in it for the love of the games, and neither are Sega, nor Nintendo - in the end it\'s all about money. Sony thought they could make a few bucks selling us multitaps if they just took out two controller ports.
I love 4 player sports games (ISS Pro Evolution rocks), and I\'ve bought a PS2 multitap. Sure I would have preferred 4 controller ports, but in the end Sony sold the PS2 for a loss as it is so I can understand why they wanted to make some dough. Besides, with a multi-tap you can play with more than 4 players - I\'ve played 5 player NHL FaceOff 2001 (the better PSX version) and Fifa 98.
-
there are 4 controller poprst, 2 conrtol ports, and 2 usb ports, im sure they will make usb controls some day, but the multi tap is to sepnd more money, and it is true once we get online gaming we wont need a multi tap

Eh?
I don\'t know about you, but if I ever play games online with my ps2, it doesn\'t mean I will stop having 3 friends over to play. Online Gaming is no substitute for gaming in person with your buddies and socializing.

No 4 player wont become useless because i have friends that i love to play on timesplitters but dont have a ps2 so i play them on 4 player, and the connection better be broadband or everyone will get pissed off quick

you miss understood me, it would be very stupid to toss the multi-tap aside when i spent 35 bucks on it, i meant that once on-line gaming arrives I really wouldnt want to play with my friends, when I can play with people all over the world, and my outlook on friends is different, i have no friends... the only people i use the multi tap with is my little bro, my girlfriend, and maybe 1 or 2 of my brothers friends, im sure you have plenty of friends so you will be using it more often, its just my outlook on it. now do you understand

Well Jumpman, I guess you just have a different opinion. Seems you offered a completely opposite opinion on every line of my post. Oh well.
There will always be those who feel ripped off because Sony didn\'t custom tailor to their desires.
And no, I\'m not "defending Sony at any cost" as someone inferred earlier, I just am not so arrogant as to pretend to know Sony\'s intentions. The design they have for the PS2 is theirs, and if consumers don\'t care for it, it won\'t sell well.
Do y\'all really think that their marketing people were sitting with their fingers up their noses? If their research showed a majority, even slight, that wanted 4 ports, they more than likely would have designed the PS2 to suit them.
Sony\'s a business, not your spongeable freind. Sega, Nintendo, and all the others are businesses too, and they want your money just the same.
......Anyway, my guess is that if the PS2 did have 4 ports Sony would just get accused of stealing someone elses idea....like they always do.
-
Jesus, guys, this is pretty much a non-issue, isn\'t it? Not everybody plays four-player games. The PSX did very well for itself without doing much to accomodate four players. It\'s not like you can\'t play 4-player games, though...just buy a freakin\' Multi-tap! It\'s really not that big a deal. Again, this is an issue where some of you just act like the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons; you just don\'t like anything. If you want 4 players, shell out a little and quit *****ing. I did, and I don\'t feel cheated. Still a little puzzled why people who don\'t seem to like anything PS2 would build up hundreds of posts on a PS2 board...some of you must truly have nothing else going on...
