Okay my comp really blows, as if I haven\'t told you guys enough... I bought counter strike and obviously i cant play it on my comp. Well tonite I was REALLY bored and tried to play it. Igot into server and of course it was really really laggy. I have the video mode on SOFTWARE.. my friend said if I switch to Direct 3D I\'ll be able to play w/o much lag? is this true, if not is there ANYTHING I can do to plyu this game on my sh*t comp???

if your Vid Card can switch to Direct 3d then do it...or better yet put it on Open GL if you can.
it goes like this
Software Mode- Worst
Direct 3D- Medium (I think)
Open GL- Overall Best

Counter Strike is based upon the Quake.2 engine as far as I know (not much of an CS player). And the Q.2 engine is designed around OpenGL.
So if you play in D3D mode you will be getting horrible performance.

wrong, HL (and the CS mod) are written in a modified quake 1 engine (75% rewritten) and yes you are right on the other part OpenGL is the better one, why don\'t you download GLsetup, and change your settings to OpenGl! :)

How do I download the GL setup and where? This could very well let me play on this comp.

A decent rig for decent performance in CS:
PIII 450
128MB RAM
GeForce 32MB DDR/Voodoo 5 AT LEAST
Anything slower you will be getting subpar performance.

Well it\'s difficult to choose between D3D and OGL.OGL hasn\'t made alot of of progress featurewise for sometime now,but D3D has all the latest features.
So currently D3D edges out OGL just because it has alot of new features that OGL has yet to implement.
But games that use D3D\'s features aren\'t many.

I think D3D is pretty poop. At least when I\'ve had the chance to choose either OpenGL and D3D. Somehow OpenGL seems faster and has better picture quality, while D3D is slower and uglier. But it could be better now and with a brandnew gfxcard.
