I read this from a site which has been edited due to its content.
"The new Version 4 model is the first to be used by all 4 major regions at the same time. The different manufacturing processes employed by Sony were to cut costs and improve on the original JAP design (and boy did it need improving - we\'re still not impressed with the DVD ROM drive laser quality) The biggest cost cutter is the use of 0.18 micron fabrication technology around the now smaller but beefier Graphics Synthesizer which has leaped in video RAM from 4MB to 32MB. Unfortunately this has only been implemented on the version 4 boards, so unlucky to those with older models - didn\'t Sony keep that one quiet. Hopefully this will be the last board change for a while, but you know what Sony are like........"
Hmm notice the nice leap from 4meg to 32 meg in video ram.
Im not sure what i make of this news if its true we have all been screwed and ill be ringing Sony Customer Care and getting my PS2 exchanged ASAP.
I can\'t see them really doing this but if the new board does have 32 meg then developers are bound to use it ?
Anyone got any info ?

That is ONE HELL OF A MEMORY INCREASE.
I hope that\'s not true. But I won\'t be surprised if it is.
-
The news is untrue. The 16MB version of the GS is for arcade use, and the higher clocked GS I-32 (32MB version) is for GScube and workstations. PS2 consoles will use the standard 4MB GS at 0.18um which equals lower cost, paving the way for a price drop post-E3. The new GS will run cooler but to the consumer there will be little difference. Developers will code for it the same as always.
-
And the 4mb is buffer medium not Visual Memory.

I wounder why people are posting links to a Mod-site, Its not allowed in here.

Those idiots at Playstationmods...
It´s the ARCADE Board they are talking about...
-
But if the new motherboard had a thousand laser shooting anime-style phallic tentacles, would it be worth it?
I think not. ;)

The 16MB version of the GS is for arcade use
So that means we\'ll see inferior versions @ home, just great. Tekken 4 / Sould Calibur 2 / Etc.

No. He means the networked terminals that are going to be in Japanesse arcades, not sytem 246. We should se pretty good ports of games developed for that board.
-
Exactly.
And so what if arcade graphics are better? I, for one, would LOVE to see that. I miss the days when System 22 and Model 2 ruled the arcades. And we still got great playing ports on the PSX and Saturn. Sure, not arcade perfect, but the arcade boards are much more expensive. When I see a Naomi or System 246 title I don\'t see an arcade game and think, "Cool, I\'ll get a perfect home version." I often think, "what\'s this console game doing in the arcade?"
I would like to see both low-end and high-end boards. System 246 would be like System 11 for low cost games and quick home translations. A higher spec model should be for flagship games like Tekken 4. I\'m glad AM2 chose Naomi2 for VF4 instead of Naomi.
In the arcades Sony has Namco\'s System 246 and the B2B network board. System 246 is essentially a PS2 while the B2B considerably beefier. It has 128MB RAM, 16MB VRAM, and a 80GB HDD.

Ok first thing, I basically posted the URL and wrote the thread without thinking of the content of the URL. The URL has now been removed and therefore there is no problem.
However I didn\'t feel that you needed to gain some cheap extra post by pointing out my mistake to the mods of this board who are quite capable of fixing the problem themselves, which they evidently did.
However whilst we on the topic of mistakes your post itself doesn\'t follow the rules, for starters its just spam, does it have anything to do with the original topic, secondly I don\'t know if you have noticed but there is a reporting link to report links to the moderators, ever think about using that ? ;)

Anyway back to the post in question.
I really do hope that it is the arcade board as that has nothing to do with the PS2 home console.
However they do sound like they are talking about the home board but if this was true it would be plasted on every site and in every magazine as dreadful news for Sony fans.
Surely though Sony swapping the console and therefore making our consoles invalid in newer games would be illegal ?
Looking at it I think the new version 4 boards will only benefit Sony in terms of production costs and us PS2 owners shouldn\'t see any difference, this sounds right I think ?
Lets hope so.

Suit yourself. I\'d prefer for arcade games to look like they do @ home. I really \'lost it\' for the arcade scene and I couldn\'t care less. I\'d rather have a perfect translation, rather than worrying whether it\'ll be a good port or not.

Arcade boards always have more ram than consoles, look at naomi (1!) it has 32 meg, while dc only has 24 meg. How come that Dc managed to get arcade perfect naomi games? This is because data on arcade boards in stored UNCOMPRESSED in very large chucks, so lots of ram is needed.
