I recently borrowed a dreamcast and I was amazed at how many games had a option to run the game at 60Hz.
Anyone got any idea as to what UK games will have this 60Hz options ?
Will Red Faction have it ?
What about GT3 ?
I know Fur Fighters will have this option as it is mentioned on the PSW DVD.
DOA2 already has this option.
It can\'t be too hard to add the option into games and it does get rid of boarders and adds a little bit of speed to our games.
-
Well, it all depends on what you want to know.
The JAP PS2 can translate a PAL signal, even though it is a NTSC machine.
R2RB2 has a 60 HRZ option, and GT3 \'should\'. From what Iv\'e heard...
-
do you guys really notice the difference between 50hz and 60hz? Is it the framerate or something, because I know that the pal TTT was bad because of slowdown etc
-
It makes everything run 17.5% quicker, the code, graphics routines, everything. i cant go into it in detail
as i\'m not that clued up on 50Hz vs 60Hz but you will notice a big difference
-
how do you change it
-
Yeah its 17.5% faster.
Also by running in 60Hz we get a full screen image.
Tekken didn\'t have any slowdown and ran completely smooth its just its slower than the NTSC counterparts. I haven\'t played the NTSC version but apparently if you do you wouldn\'t want to touch the PAL version.
Bozco: To change it you need the game to have the option. Normally if the game has the option of changing the play mode it will appear whilst the game is loading, allowing you to select the desired mode being either 50Hz (can play on any television) or 60Hz (generally newer televisions).

On the offical PS2 mag this month you get a playable demo of sky oddsey, and you have the option to switch it from 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
You do notice a big difference when you have 60 Hz selected, everything is smoother.
-
what games out right now have it?
-
i remember when i played the jap version of tekken 3, you dont actually relise how slow the pal one is untill you have played a ntsc game.
Bozco: DOA2 is the only game i know of which has the 50/60 Hz option in the uk

That probably mean the real game has this option too, I can\'t see them programming it for the demo only, unless its something OPS2 did which I doubt it.
This is good news for me esp since I was thinking of getting this game :)
-
50HZ can also be great when the framerate is high
-
The thing that gets me at the moment is that my TV does not support 60Hz,so i am going to buy a sony wega, when i get off of holiday, bacause i think gt3 has 60 mode in it.
-
Another thing to note is my old downstairs TV which only has composite scart can play 60Hz mode. I will however be playing it on my portable with RGB scart.
-
Cool info again Ethan, on the 60Hz switch. It\'s just another reason to pick this game up.
It would be nice tho\' to see Sony incorporate this option into all it\'s future titles.
Bring 60Hz to all games sony @:0)
-
Um, someone fill me in here. First of all I didn\'t even know you could do that(even on some games). Second of all doesn\'t 60hz suck(but I\'m thinking in PC terms here). And third of all if 60hz is so much better why aren\'t games defaulted to it?
-
Basically you don\'t need to worry about it, it effects only PAL PS2 systems.
Basically its down to NTSC (America and Jap) vs PAL (UK and some others) video modes.
NTSC runs full screen at 60Hz with a slightly interlaced effect, this is what you lot in America see as default and therefore never have to worry.
PAL games run with boarders and at 50Hz (17.5% slower). It makes a difference, games can become sluggish if the converstion over to PAL is done poorly. The only good thing about PAL is that its a slightly better picture with it being squashed.
However in comparasion most people think PAL is dated and want to play games how they were intended at their proper speed.
The only problem is that old TVs can\'t take a PAL 60Hz signal and can only take the traditional PAL 50Hz signal therefore games have to be in PAL 50Hz to suit everyone.
However some games also have the option of running at PAL 60Hz, providing the full screen and smoother gameplay version of the game, at a speed it was designed to be ran at.
So now your upto date with it. :)
Basically its a problem which has plagued PAL gamers since the beginning of gaming history but in this day and age, when developers can add a PAL 60Hz mode they all should do, yet they don\'t. Infact the majority of PS2 games only have the traditional PAL 50Hz mode.
Thats why I was wondering what future titles would we see in PAL regions that offered the 60Hz mode.

Thanks. :)

That\'s one hell of a sum up Rich. Excelent, everybody should understand this now. I knew all of the info
that you posted here but you\'ve put it down in such a way that i never could. Good post
-
Well, I have four moderately new TVs in my house and none of them support 60hz
-
Gran Tourismo 3 and Metal Gear 2 should definitly have a 60hz option.
But I am very surprised that Zone Of The Enders didnt have the option, as well as the Metal Gear 2 Demo.
Which really screwed up the borders, shifting the screen more to the upper right
-
Solid Snake / Stanzo, Thanks, glad to help.
CS2x: Thats a shame, but as you can see not many PAL games have the option anyway so your not missing out on much.
Crippler: Yeah I know what you mean. I played the ZOE demo with OPS2 and as well as a normal picture shift to the left that PS2s do there was also the picture shift up.
Konami should hopefully sort this out before releasing the PAL version of MGS2.
If only all developers included such features as PAL 50Hz / 60Hz options, Screen Centering Options and finally Keybaord and Mouse support.
I mean take Red Faction, the framerate has been a problem but if they included 60Hz PAL it won\'t be so bad for us lot. Also why didn\'t they just add Keyboard and Mouse support, even if no body used it, it still keeps everyone happy.
-
Yeah i agree the 60Hz mode should be included in all the games,it carnt take much more time to include it.
And i also think that mouse and keyboard support should be included.
-
Ahh, i remember back to the ST & Amiga days. "Press 0 to toggle 50/60hz". It was simple then and it should be now!
Come on Sony, if the likes of Pompey Pirates, Automation & LSD could do it, Why can\'t you
And they say that ignorance is bliss..... Pah!
