Title: I don\'t hate X-Box, but won\'t it cost a bomb?
Post by: CS2x on April 22, 2001, 12:16:18 PM
Well, unless Microsoft don\'t mind loosing tonnes of money on the X-Box, I think it will cost a bomb...I mean, I have nothing against X-Box, but, well..

A DVD player
Internet Access
A big Hard Drive
Dolby Digital stuff
The most powerful console
4 controller ports
ect.

All of this will add up to a very expensive console, no?

A DVD player is, at lowest, £100...HrdD is 50-£100
..Internet acces..even if it didn\'t have all these extras it would be hell expensive..it\'s soooo powerful!

I think microsoft has the means to absorb a massive loss on their console if they think it means it will sell well.  Even so, I doubt they will.  I can\'t see myself affording a Xbox, cause I can see the price easily hitting 450+ US (which is over 800 CDN, all told).  Besides, I\'m quite happy with my PS2, and the games coming out for it, so unless Xbox has games which interest me the way FFX, GT3, and MGS2 do, I won\'t be getting one.

Then you obviously can\'t see much, do you even know what you are talking about, I didn\'t think so. How will xbox be priced around 450 American when it only costs MS $375 US to build the machine. Then they have to sell the console at a loss, at around 299 US. MS , J Allard and many others have said numerous times that XBox will be price competitively to psx2. So please do more research next time before assuming things. $450 American, what a JOKE!!!

You\'re so DAMN SURE about everything aren\'t you? you arrogant ****. Who cares what allard says. MS is known to BS alot. LIES, DAMNED LIES, AND MICROSOFT PRESS RELEASES. We\'ll see how much it costs when the price is announced. But please, stop being arrogant, because I have a feeling you\'ll be eating those words.

Tisk, Tisk, Tisk animal LOOK who is the arrogant one now. I believe you will be the one eating your own words out of your mouth. Listen you DUMB **** you would have to be stupid to believe that MS would price the XBOX at 450, moronic at that. If they did that XBOX will fail, PERIOD. MS is allot smarter than you when it comes to business, Therefore 450 is out of the question. Oh and you say who cares what J Allard, Berkley, and Ed Fries says, what a moron you are. Theses are the guys whom are running the show, if they say competitively to psx2 they mean competitively to psx2. My GOD grow up, Damn the guys at MSXBOX would get a kick this nonsense.

SO EVERYONE that reads this thread, remember what animal S*it has said here, and what I have said. Then when MS officially announces the XBOX’s price we will see who is laughing. Animal get ready to pull your foot out of your mouth, LOL, LOL

CS2x, you also have to remember that certain parts of the Xbox are allready being mass produced today so it saves them a great deal in terms of R&D costs.  Anyone who feels that a PS2 is affordable should be content with the Xbox\'s price as well.

I don\'t see why anyone ois debating the cost of XBox

Plain and simple. If XBox sells for $1 over 300 its a failure

In fact if XBox tries to sell at $299 while the PS2 is $250 and the GC is $200 it will suffer.

Micosoft know this, if they are serious about being a player in  the future beyond XBox then they just have to suck it up and take the loss early on.

Expect XBox to be on par with the competition

I don\'t know about  you but if ps2 is 250$ how will that hurt xbox>? Ps2 line up of games sucks now. And if xbox shows that it has a better line up of games why would you not buy the better system.  Clearly if you can afford a ps2 at 299.99 you can afford an xbox that proves to be superior. But this is all based on the fact that xbox has a strong showing of games at launch and if it does then that is all that is needed. I think all the hype has settle on ps2 and it needs to show use some better games. Hhehe I can be critical of ps2 because I am not a fanboy to any game system. I want the best quality of games. whether it be at 299. or 199.99 I am tired of pissy sorry launches from companies. I thought dc launch was decent. And ps2 launch was just below level.  If xbox proves that it is the superior game system a price tag of 299.99 can not hurt it.

What is up with the little personal fight goin\' on in this thread?

Why debate the Xbox price? We don\'t know it yet or have a clue what it will be. I suspect around $300 or so. But, even if it is over $300, who cares? It isn\'t like most PS2 owners have room to talk, I mean the PS2 does cost  $300 , then an extra unknown amount for the HDD and ethernet adapter. Either way, both consoles could end up costing well over $450.  Until we see a final price tag on the system, debating it is pointless. It is pure speculation and will lead into fights like this.

Not to mention every hardware dealer / vendor takes a loss on the system for the first 2 years or so. Sony took a loss and so did Sega with the DC. You can expect MS to follow suit.

Everyone just chill and wait for E3. MS should announce the price then.

I know it\'s late now, but microsoft originally said they would price it competitively with the PS2, however in recent interviews, spokespeople have simply responded to that question with "does the ps2 come with a HDD or modem?"... which tells me they are now bracing for a more expensive product.

Other problem with Xbox?  It\'s coming out a little late.. Sony already got my money, and unless (as I said before), microsoft has games that interest me as much as FFX, FFXI, MGS2, and GT3 I won\'t be buying one, especially since I\'ll be getting 3 of those games around release time.

NEWHO, we\'ll just have to wait and see what kind of loss microsoft is willing to take on the box.  We\'ll also have to wait and see if the (you stated) $375 manufacturing price tag stays there.

Yeah.  If I had a choice between buying an Xbox with Munch and DOA3 (the only two games that interest me on the Xbox so far), or buying MGS2:SOL and BG: Dark Alliance, I would definately get the latter.  There are some great games coming out for the PS2 at same time the Xbox and the NGC are being launched, and I think this will steal a lot of the launch pizzazz (for lack of a better word :)) away from both of them.

yEAH there are a lot of good games coming out when xbox launch the main one I am wanting is mgs2 and maybe gt3, but I can always rent gt3. I am so ready for a new gaming experience that no one or two games can stop me from buying the next gen consoles. I just can\'t see missing out on some great games from xbox. Seeing how I play a lot of multi-player games and sony does not have a lot of good ones out . I can\'t wait for xbox and gamecube.(I don\'t what has happen but I see nintendo in a different way after playing 007 and winback)

But how many online games have been announced for the Xbox?  Unless I have missed something, the only one is Rayman M which is also coming to the PS2.  This E3 is when both the Xbox and the PS2 should show their online plans, so I wouldn\'t judge the PS2 or the Xbox until then.

PS2 games now are fine. They could be better they could be alot worse. There are a solid library of cool games to be had NOW

BUT by the time Xbox releases the PS2 will have a solid 30 or so games that are very buyable and cool so you argument about games makes 0 sense to most of us

What you fail to completely understand is the console war will be decided by casual gamers not us diehards who no the in and outs of almost all systems

These casual gamers will recognize the PS2 and GC form SOny and Nintendo, they\'ll recognize familiar franchises and they\'ll recognize a cheaper price tag.

Xbox will suffer quite a bit if it does not go in with the mentality that we\'ll take a huge loss on the hardware and make it back later or next round

MS and XBox needs to do everything possible to open the casual gamers eyes to it over recognized brandnames with cheaper prices

Xbox IMO will not be over $299

Don\'t forget that they can also rerelease all the best ,early titles at a lower cost to combat the newer systems.

Microsoft is a recognized brandname.  Admittedly they are not much known for games, except for the Flight Simulators...  I think if Ma and Pa from Gary Indiana decide they want to buy a $300 console for junior (for whatever reason), they might give Microsoft additional consideration due to the brand.

P.S. If Microsoft ever releases and XBox version of Outlook, I\'m going on a killing spree.
